Title: Would Appreciate views on this RX
Post by: Icesurf3r on November 10, 2004, 06:35:56 PM
Found this RX on Autotrader, up for £7500 so probably get it for around 7, though i have got my eye on a few others that i would prefer.

The only thing with this one is the fact that (a) it had an engine rebuild by Hurley (who i\'ve read some less than flattering comments about) and (b) he has no receipt for this as he paid cash (though he does have the guarantee stamped on the service)

Below is what he has told me about the car, plus a pic

I bought the car 18 months ago from a company called JVS in Edinburgh who
specialise in importing Japanese cars. The car had done roughly 65000 miles
when I bought it, I done 1500 miles before the oil metering pump failed
causing no oil pressure and blowing all the seals on the rotary engine.

I then had Hurley Engineering put one of there Sports Engines into the car,
as well as fitting a new oil metering pump. We decided to switch the boost
controller off at this point to run the new engine in. I then done the 1500
mile run in, took the car back to Hurley for a major service and check up on
the new engine.

About 500 miles later the clutch went on the car, I had this replaced and
the flywheel skimmed, while the clutch was out, they checked the gearbox
which was a little noisy, found a couple of faults there as well, so I had
that overhauled as well. So basically the whole drive train has been
overhauled.

I have receipts for all of the work done, except the engine rebuild, I paid
cash!! However I have hurleys guarantee stamped on the 1500 mile service, it
is valid for another 18 months or 24000miles.

The full spec of the car is:

Roll Cage
Border Intercooler
K&N Induction Kit
4" Straight Thru Exhaust (Not sure of the make, no markings)
EBS Boost Controller (Still switched off, decided to leave it off while
selling car)
APEXi ECU
Exhaust Temp + Turbo Boost Pressure Gauges
Fully adjustbale Suspension (Again Unsure of the make)
TOAD Cat 1 Alarm & immobiliser
MOT OCT 05
TAX MAR 05
Aftermarket Spoiler, Front Splitter, Wing Mirrors and Air Intake on the
Drivers side pop up light.

To be honest, the interior of the car is not perfect, but what is under the
bonnet just about is.

The car is fast, when I bought it, it was putting out 350bhp, with the new
engine and the boost controller back on, it will be putting at least that
power out, if not more.

Has he got evidence of the power output?
Is it stock twins?

I wonder what excatly is a Hurley\'s sports engine??

The car does sound pretty standard. OK, thumbs up that its running a pfc. That would save you a few quids.

But at £7k with a suspect rebuild might seem a bit much. Also, I was unaware of any rotary builders doing a 24 months warranty on rebuilds.

Rather spend £5k on one that does need a rebuild and do it yourself hey.

Lastly, I highly doubt its pushing out 350 or more with those mods.

Asked him about that in an email.

Unfortunately he works out on the rigs, so i\'m not expecting an answer anytime soon.

However i have been in touch with Brian about the red C West RX and he\'s sending me some more details.......  So who knows.

Just not rushing into buying the first RX i come across.

To all members who have helped me with their input on other cars i have asked about, i would like to say a big thankyou and your help is very much appreciated and i look forward to meeting many of you as soon as i have my RX and can start attending meets.

Once again  THANKYOU ALL :wave

QuoteI was unaware of any rotary builders doing a 24 months warranty on rebuilds.

When I bought my car it had been rebuilt/ported by Hurley who did extend their standard 2 year warrnaty, given to the previous owner, to me.

It may or may not be worth the paper its written on, I don\'t know as I\'ve not had ant cause to question it.

That reminds me - the two years is just about up now  :(

If you have any doubts at all about spec\'s that are being given to you then walk away, we all like to make out its more than it actually is but the Hurley sports engine??????:(

Hmmm if I remember from my nasty little argument with Eamon Hurley their idea of a sports engine is to remove the cones from the housings.

I think you pay an extra £700+vat for that 5min job.
