Title: Australian ECU - which one to buy ?
Post by: Mart160plus on November 09, 2004, 10:01:32 PM
I know there are 18 zillion threads on ECUs contained within (having visited some of them), but I need some advice, especially from our Australian cousins.
A tasmanian friends of mine is going to Oz for 5 weeks over Xmas, and has said he can get me an ECU if needs be (and needs be).
I have a 94 FD Type R2 (so 8 bit ECU) and I\'d be grateful if you guys could give me the best prices you have seen for Haltech, Microtech and Apexi in Oz.
I\'d like to be able to try and map it myself from a laptop if poss, and I\'ve been to a few sites but all we tend to discuss here in the UK are Apexi, or if you want a second mortgage, Motec.

Any advice welcome ! I\'m sure he can fit more than one in his case if any UK-based FDers are interested too !

Thanks,

Mart.

Mart, just get the power FC m8, its the best option for the rex because its sooo well known and people know how to map them for the rex.

I paid £470 from Auz for the FC + commander

Boohoo:(

I know it makes sense, I just love the idea of programming it from my laptop !! Also wanna ball-park how much I could buy a Haltech or Microtech for as my mate might be able to get discount.

Don\'t be too sad, you\'ll get the car sorted, better than before.;)

Having gone through the same thing myself you have my sympathy in my 199th post.

while he\'s over there tell him to get you Datalogit too for the power FC, that way you can get it on the lappy, in fact I might ask you to get me one ;)

Probs with most after market ECU\'s are most require other work doing such as loom mods etc.

having done it on the 205 with the DTA P8PRO, making custom looms etc is rewarding but a complete pain in the arse

If you\'re planing on going single with heavy mods then I think you should consider going haltech e11, microtech etc. Else, the power FC is cheap and cheerful and tuners can map it safely here (dont think they can map it aggresive here yet).

Got a mate who owns a fd3s in sydney, will ask him some prices for you. Watch this space. :)

How you define aggressive? Most (all?) the quick FD\'s in the UK are running on the Apexi. No troubles WELL beyond 500+ bhp and around 30 psi so far.......

I\'d be the first to admit, it\'s not perfect - but it works :)

Thanks Freddy, I will watch this space. Looking to mildly modify at first, then go mental later.

I would define aggresive to push a low 10, poss top 9 if the fd is running well over 500 and 30 lbs of boost. Risky stuff, but we only have to look at aus to see it being done.

Then again, I personally think the Haltech E11 if tuned right can run lower timer than the pfc. But, do we have any HIT tuners here?

Of course, if you want your fd capable of beating off the porsche\'s etc then even a mild pfc tune up and single turbo would do. :)

Mart - Awaiting reply from mate out there so bare with me :p

Microtech LT8 / LTX8 ECUs work out about the same price as PFC if you can get it picked up (i.e. not incur shipping costs!) just remember to order the laptop connector!
