Title: Ohhh F*ck!!!!!!!
Post by: wiggy on November 09, 2004, 02:10:18 AM
well chaps, you have 1 less rex on the road as from tonight

Having had a great night meeting some of you guys at the Mascrat Manor north west meet. And seeing some dam fine cars, what do I go and do.....

CRASH!!!!

What a f*ckin w*anker...........

I am majorly p*ssed to put it mildly coz the car looks to me like a total loss :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I am 100% sure it wasn\'t the car or me at fault though. The roads where great as anyone who attended will tell you, dry, clear etc. Coming home down the same road I had just been out for a test drive in a m8\'s GT4 I knew it was OK.

All was ok until I turned onto the A57 bypass which cuts out Irlam on the way back into Manchester. The bypass basically goes through a large industrial estate and it\'s quiet and the roads are fast and straight. I booted it down a straight and starts to approach a bend, I back off and then notice right round the bend is a roundabout, so I brake, then all of a sudden the wheels lock and I start to skid. BUT, the brakes locked way to easy like breaking on ICE, no sign of ABS either, so I can only guess I hit some diesel or the roads had a slippery film of diesel on them? OR because it was quite late there was some minor due on the road surface? Diesel seems the likely candidate as its a industrial area and wagons are in and out all the time.

So, there I am skidding towards the kurb on the opposite side of the road waiting for the impact (probably still doing about 50 at this point) the car turns so I am backwards then skims the wheels just enough to start us spinning (must have completed about 5 full 360 spins before the small triangle island approaches) I hit the little island driver side on and wipe out 2 light bollards. Of course, out of all the little islands round the roundabout on the exit roads I hit the one that has 2 x 4\' high steel lamp posts which my car flattens while causing most of the damage and causes me to head but the side window with one hell of a crack. Then I come to a stop just before mounting the actual roundabout. I managed to start the car and drive off one of the roads and park up to check out my handly work.

front, passenger side and rear of the car all look perfect, drivers side :(  not good :(  the posts basically hit the drivers door directly and have given it a nice re-shaping. The sill etc are all pointing inward but I don\'t know how badly yet this has damaged the floor pan and chassis??

Rear arch is pushed right in over the wheel and rubbing on the rear tyre. Back wheel looks a bit odd and is at a strange angle, front wing has some dents too but nothing major....

ARSE, ****, WANK, BUGGER, GIT.......

Now, I don\'t know if its a write off or not yet but its not lookin good :(  I\'ll Have to see what the insurance have to say about it. I may try and straighten out a few dents tomorrow to make it look a bit better than it does now, The good thing is the car was going great before it happened :D If you can\'t smile about it, go jump off a bridge....Its only a car and can be replaced I suppose, its just another hassle I could do without right now :(

Sorry to hear this news Wiggy, i didn\'t get to meet you at the mascrat meet as i was there but didn\'t know who you were???

Although if i did meet you apologies for not remembering, mine was the purple "dragon" rx7 in the far car park.

But get the car checked out and see if its a write off, if not then begins the long journey back, truely gutted for you buddy:(

Gurj

ps - most important thing is that you came to no harm, remember that mate.

Hey Gurj, cheers m8, both myself and my dad are ok, well appart from a sore head that is...

If it is a write off (to coin a phrase) I\'ll be back!!!

I was in the carpark with most of the other RX\'s talking to Sean, Su and co most of the night. although I did see your car ;)

The ironic thing is I only came to the meet to pick up a spare wheel....wish I hadn\'t bothered now   but lifes a bitch and shit happens I suppose. If it wasn\'t tonight I suppose it could have happened some other time.

I\'ll wait till the morning and see what extent the damage is. I can\'t get the driver door open and thats usually a bad sign from my experience....

Fingers crossed, I am due SOME good luck with this car surely :(

S**T!

Sorry to hear your misery fella. Glad to know you and your father are OK and nice to see you can still smile about it :)

Saw your car, did look good with the volk rims on.

I bet the Power FC wasnt ready for that trick in its learning mode :p

Keep us updated.

You do seem to have a good outlook on it thou (relatively so i mean not like you can say woohoo look wot i did....) so try & keep that & i have my fingers crossed for ya here that it isn\'t a write off &/or it doesn\'t leave ya too much out of pocket one way or other.....

Sorry to hear that Paul.  Been there and done it so know what it feels like im afraid.

Cheers guys :D

Bit stiff this morning and me heeed is still throbbing

Looking at the car in the daylight and after a broken nights kip, hand on heart I recon its a deffo right off :( I still need to get the drivers door open so I can assess the damage to the sill and floor area but I would say the results won\'t be good...

So I have 2 options really, don\'t tell the insurance and break the car up (please don\'t start asking me for bits just yet) and this way I don\'t loose any of my NCB. Hopefully I can get back what its cost me from selling all the parts off??

OR, I claim. wait for them to say "yes, its a write off" and then try and get at least some money off them.

I am still trying to decide what to do before phoning the insurance today

Lee, and anyone else thats been through this, what usually happens now? If I claim do they just send an assessor round to check the car out? I need to remove all the bits today if they do. The pitty is I have the 17" Volks and and the Apexi N1 suspension that will have to stay on the car because I have no replacements :( If someone local wants to p/x with their std stuff then be my guessed, but it would have to be very very soon before the insurance come.

If not they will have to stay on and someone will get them cheap off a scrappers when it ends up there :(

Cheers anyway guys

;)

HOLY SHIT !

dear god matey - there is one good thing i suppose - you didnt spend time cleaning it first

im really shocked - when i read the thread i actaully thought it was freddy - until i realised it was you

i cant believe you have smashed it up - im really really really sorry matey !

and gurj - you was talking to freddy and his mate infront of wiggy\'s car - it was a black one ( and rather dirty at that )

OMG - i still cant believe it

glad to hear you are OK though

is there anyway that you can get back to the scene of the accident and take some pics - if you could prove there is desiel on the road - you might beable to counter sue the council for not taking care of the roads - its a long shot - but you never know

still cant believe it - bloody hell

Real sad to see this post, but very pleased your both O/K.
We have unfortunately lost a few cars this year but thankfully with no injuries.

Hopefully this has not dampened your enthusiasm to much.

Couple of things with these cars for other people reading this thread  though ,

First of all these cars are deceptively fast due to their capabilities and things do tend to rush up real quick at times giving that \'O Bugger\' reaction\'!.

The ABS system is not that good on pre 1995 cars and it\'s real hard to tell your brain to come of the brake when you know you are skidding and seemingly going faster!!

Not only do a lot forget that they now have a high HP rear wheel drive car that will bite you if not treated with respect at all times , but also they forget Tyres !, especially if you have a recently imported car you will find invariably they have concrete tyres fitted offering NO desirable grip !.

GOOD Tyres for these cars are the best improvement you will ever make on an FD or FC, with Goodyear Eagles the best with Toyo\'s close behind as these seem best suited to our cars, and after that a brake pad upgrade is the next.

I would hold my hands up and admit if I was driving like a loon but I wasn\'t. I think that maybe the test drive in my mates GT4 15 mins earlier maybe gave me some over confidence with grip though

I had just fitted Toyo Proxes the week before as well....bollux

It hasn\'t dampened my enthusiasm but the missus might take some talking round  she is already saying I can\'t have another but we\'ll see....hehehe

That red one my mates bringing in at the mo is tempting ....mwahahahaha

Paul,

Mine was in a police lockup so I told the insurance company and they went to look at it there.  I couldnt get to it to get parts so anything you want off do now.

If you decide to claim id be removing bits of trim that people always need and all sorts, I doubt they would say much or be noticed and if you get asked think of a legit excuse, ie you stripped it out as you were in the process of changing the rear seats.  Kind true.

Claiming was a pain in the arse.  I think my insurance companies first offer was something like 3k or whatever really taking the piss.  Managed to get a reasonable figure in the end but not great.

Losing NCB has hurt me though, im basically screwed with 0 ncb and a claim so in hindsight might have been better breaking it and looking for a car that needed an engine.

Lee

Oh and dont let the Volks go!  If it comes to it ill drive up and put some standard S14 wheels on.

Aw mate, that\'s some f*ckin bad luck that. But at least you got out relatively unscathed. I\'ve got a very low opinion of insurance companies and I\'d be willing to put money on you getting almost as much from breaking her as you would from claiming. Please don\'t let this dampen your enthusiasm for the 7, it sounded like you had some really good plans for yours. I think everyone in the club would benefit if you stuck around.

Very sorry to hear it is bent - but don\'t open that drivers\' door. Opening it might increase distortion you could get jigged straight if you repair it.

Since you have the wreckage at home the assessor will come to you so I would not worry too much about stripping bits off it yet and you MUST get an independent assessor to come and look too.  My son\'s mate has just had his very tidy BMW written off by the insurer for the want of a £400 quid repair.  Sometimes they just look at the registration number and write them off based on age alone.  If it is written off:
1.  Refuse to pay salvage costs (They may ask you for these even though you got it home! - don\'t get me started on insurance companies)
2. Based on your independent assesors report you can make them an offer for the wreck. (It may be an \'uneconomic repair\' rather than genuinely terminal)  If your guy says it is repairable get costs and then you can get it cleared off the insurers register once its done and inspected.

I\'ve shovelled a few cars onto trailers in my time that have been saved and it sounds as though you have put alot into yours.  Don\'t give up yet!

Andrew

I drove past you last night on the A57 (didn\'t stop because you were talking on your mobile and looked okay).
That section on the A57 is always slippy mate and I think you were just unlucky. Good job it wasn\'t a high speed bit.

I\'ve bitten the bullet ans told the insurance...

Couple of reasons for this...

A: After having a good look over the car is doesn\'t actuallt seem as bad as first thought. Panel lines all seem OK even on the front wing and the boot on the drivers side. Feeling under the sill the floor seems straight and in tact.

Now I know they will automatically try and say its a write off but the women on the phone told me if you want it repairing be sure to tell the garage thats coming to take it away for assesment. So I am going to beg and pleed with them, if its repairable....DO IT!!

I have removed a few bits offit such as Power FC and deffi\'s I may removed the Apexi induction as well so if someone local has a spare std air box kicking around they want to donate and don\'t mind dropping it off I would be iternally greatful :D

IF they do say its a write off I am going to get Gareth to supply me with a nice jucy bill for the car saying I paid £8500 or something for it only 3 weeks ago, this way they can\'t really disspute its value. I know someone thats done this before and it worked for them, so worth a try. This also cuts out the hassle of getting crap offers and turning them down again and again.

If it is a write off, depending how fast I can get the cash off them I am going to probably buy the Red fast and furious one Gareth has on its way over :D  I ain\'t giving up that easy, I was just starting to get my head around the rex...

I was supprised just how many people did stop last night, women etc asking if we were OK, restored my faith in people a bit thats for sure.

I know what you mean about that section being slippy :( will be taking it a bit easier there in future thats for sure.....In fact I\'ll come down the M62-M6 next time :D

So, now I just need to wait for the garage to call for them to take away....Fingers crossed

Cheers all :D

Not that many people stopped when I had my accident, though the ambulance was there pretty quick so I guess people wouldnt bother after that.

What pissed my off though was seeing a post on a Honda Forum of someone saying they saw my car after the accident (on its roof)with the driver still stuck inside it.  I was pretty mad and I dont know how I resisted signing up to hurl abuse at them for seeing that and not helping me out the thing.

Wiggy,

Just seen this, I\'m so sorry mate, if it\'d still been your GT-Four that might not of stopped either so don\'t blame the rex. Doubt you\'d be able to claim about the road surface either, if it was diesel the council will blame local lorries an absolve themselves of responsibility.
When I wrote off my GT-Four in April I bombarded the insurance company with printouts of similar cars and their prices from Autotrader, even before they had mentioned any costs, and in the end I got given just a few hundred quid below what I wanted, so take the initiative if it\'s written off. Two weeks later I only just missed out on buying the car back from an auction for £1600 !
You\'ll get it sorted, chin up though Manolo !

Mart.

I won\'t even attempt to claim off the council, can\'t be arsed with another head ache, I already have one from the crash

I am getin Gareth to sort me with a bill for the sale of the rex to me, I shall then forward this to the insurance company so they can\'t argue the fact its worth half what I paid 3 weeks ago. Hopefully this will then mean a swift payout...???

I will also be telling the garage that comes for it I WANT IT BACK and I will be speaking to the insurance as well to conform this. I;ve done it before on my old RS turbo years ago. I got the car back within a few days and a cheque in the post 2 weeks later :D

Hopefully this will go as smoothly as that one did  I can then buy another rex and have a spares car ;)
Title: Ohhh F*ck!!!!!!!
Post by: Brett on November 09, 2004, 03:34:55 PM
Yep I can vouch for not trying to claim off of the council.  Best I got out of \'em was not having to pay for a lamp post, they would give me nowt for the car.  (Twas their failure to clear the rd after a preivous accident that caused my blow out)

Still I\'m glad you are ok and it sounds like it may just be panel damage. :)

As heart breaking as it is, do you have any pics of the car after the crash??

The reason being if you are gonna break the rx people can see what there is to buy, i personelly do not want anything but just incase you were thinking it could give you a head start???

Sorry if inappropriate Wiggy, and sorry didn\'t see you last night someone said you were there but i didn\'t quite catch what you looked like, saw someone leaning against the car and guessed that were your dad??? we were inside having a drink with Grinder/jon/adrain/phil/freddy and a few others:(

Sorry to read this....hope the car is still good enough to repair, though!

One thought .... if you do take stuff off the car before the insurance people look at it, could they not say "it is not as declared on your insurance" and try and back out of paying you for either repairs or write-off value? Not sure if they would do that, but it may give them an excuse to try to??
Title: Ohhh F*ck!!!!!!!
Post by: wiggy on November 09, 2004, 04:13:55 PM
I don\'t think they even check to be honest...

I did it on my RS turbo, was a std turbo as far as the insurance were concerned but it was far from it. Got took too a garage to be checked and assessed and I got it back, the garage even told my then insurance company it was worth more than market value :D

Hell ive just walked in and read this thread. Im really sorry to hear about it. At least you are both ok. Just a real shame, It was damp in places, but it seemed to be pretty good monday night. Shame such a good night ended in that. Hope your feeling better soon (sleeping better too !) and have it or another rx7 very soon.

Was it your daily run around or a weekend car ??? How much NCB have you got ?

Shaun
Title: Ohhh F*ck!!!!!!!
Post by: wiggy on November 09, 2004, 10:00:05 PM
Yes it was my daily runner :(  so it looks like I\'ll be buying the spare company car after all until this is sorted.

I was 1 month away from 5 years NCB and now I\'ll loose 2 years plus 11 months this year :( back down to 2 again...

I might actually not claim if its a right off, keep my NCB in tact and strip it for parts?? Or if its an economic write off fix it myself and not claim?
Title: Ohhh F*ck!!!!!!!
Post by: hmltnangel on November 09, 2004, 10:58:23 PM
Sorry to hear about it mate...:(

Know what it\'s like - the only good thing for me was. Some muppet ploughed into the back of me so my ncb was fine.

Had a red mr2 at the time and it got written off.....  :(

lets all hope your baby doesn\'t have to visit the big scrapyard in the sky.

If they do - def buy the car back.... I bought the mr2 back for £200 then sold it on ebay 2 days later for £950. some good business in my book - They also paid out a half decent offer only £200 sort of what i wanted.

Also one of my mates has just had someone hit the back of his 200 sx pretty hard and we just heard today they\'re fixing his car so it may not all be doom and gloom - his car looked a right state.

On another note - whos all heading to knockhill on saturday?

Post by: wiggy on November 10, 2004, 04:53:02 PM
Just a quick update on progress...

Garage is picking the car up tomorrow for assesment.

I am told the engineer from Tesco will then visit the garage and decide what to do with it. After this he will call me and give the verdict. I have told them I want to keep the car if its a total loss no matter what. If its repairable then great.

I spoke to an indipendent assessor this morning who said he will come round once I have the verdict in from Tesco. He also gave me a value over the phone which tesco are likely to use of £7600 based on 85k miles and mines only done 60k.

So with any luck over the coming few days I will know whats happening.

If its a write off then again I am told the salvage will be worth approx 10-15% of the payout. So if I get £7k I\'ll get the car back for about 8-900ish which is fine by me.

I can then either repair myself or scrap it for parts.

Watch this space

Cheers

You\'d make alot of money breaking it, but it is a pain in the backside.

Myself and 2 other friends bought a scrapped 1994 Prelude a while ago, we stripped it and sold all the bit :) - basically we turned £590 into about £2000.

Its hard work though and you have to deliver the parts quickly and well packed otherwise people get annoyed :(

Really sorry to hear of your smash mate, glad you and your dad are ok.

I know you mentioned you cant be bothered with the Council route, but.. they are liable for diesel spillages, it might be worth a couple of calls to people in the know, you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

Hope all works out.

Hi wiggy, Bad luck mate, sorry to hear of your crash, glad you are as well as you are, and that it was not any worse than it was.
i dont know if this contributes in any way,
My lad works in a tyre fitting bay, and says that new tyres come with a silicon type release agent on the surface, ready to catch you out! and it takes a while to scrub this off, i wonder if your new Toyo\'s were not up to their full grip, what you think! anyone else heard of this?

I know exactly where you mean and bet you 10 to 1 it was diesel. I\'ve wiggled the Z there once or twice. It was a diesel-induced wiggle in Trafford Park that finally killed it too!
