Title: New link Bar???? Newbie Help
Post by: terribleturner on November 06, 2004, 04:24:54 AM
Hi, found an RX7 Gen3 that im considering purchasing. The only thing is that the current owner has told me the following, "Apparently the brakes make a clanking noise when you break, he reckons it needs a new link bar."
Does this sound right to anyone?? any ideas what sort of repair costs for such a job??
Cheers

Yes it does sound right, have no idea of cost as Ive not had it done, cant imagine it being much though. If going to look, you must know of a mechanic that could go with you just to check it out, its not a specialist job.

just posted to yer Q on FDUK with the following details for the "links" i\'ve had to get :

well parts wise it depends largely which link bit in particular it is from mazda the ones i\'d bent were roughly as follows:
Front antirollbar link £58.44
Rear toe control link £271.74
Rear lower link £168.67

all as i recall with VAT so i guess it depends which ones are mullered as to how much but certainly a healthy negotiating point at least if u still want it?
I\'m a technical numpty but sounds a bit strange is it just when braking or also when going over bumps etc?

Don\'t know if you bought this car and/or got the problem sorted, but another possibility is that the pads should also have a couple of thin sprung wires helping to stop movement in the calipers. If these have not been put back on, while perfectly safe, the pads can have a slight movement and you get an audible knock when you apply the brakes. Very easy to forget to replace these little bits of wire - did the same thing at the weekend on another car. How annoying is it to have to dismantle the calipers again?!;)

although the roll bar links are weak as hell & i hear many get bent just going over kerbs or even speed humps enthusiastically. I paid bout £180, ie a bit more, & got a nice RE-A strength bar which replaced the mounts & has a nice bar to strengthen underneath as a bonus as per http://www.dragonperformance.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?intProductID=43 (http://www.dragonperformance.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?intProductID=43)
