Title: Problems with my head???
Post by: mazda bait on November 03, 2004, 05:43:54 PM
Not definitely sure but i think i\'ve blown my head i\'ve got a 92 series 3 rex, and whenever the engine heats and pressurises the system i get coolant being constantly pushed out of the top of the expansion/reservoir tank.  I\'ve had the thermostat changed but i\'m still having the same problem.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Also if it is as bad as i hope it\'s not does anyone know of any garages that could undertake the work in either Northamptonshire or Leicestershire.

Try changing the pressure cap first on the AST tank near to the intercooler.
If that does not work then it maybe terminal.
Yonner is right, you don\'t have a head or head gasket on a rotary. It is the equivalent called the water seals that have failed.
kind regards
Carl

This is where my seals had failed, i knew this before i bought the car, but it was the car i wanted, same symptoms! i think it was caused by corrosion,
rebuild done, Well worth it, Now running in

I don\'t suppose i could be so rude as to ask how much it cost to have the re-build.  I\'ve had a search on a few sites and 2K seems to be able to buy a re-con engine for a swap?  But to be honest i\'m trying to sell her so the cheaper the better.
Also don\'t know if this will make any difference but the car still runs fine when full of water you can probably drive 5-10 miles before it empties?

Hi mate,
Well mine ran reasonably well untill all the water went, its when it overheats it does the damage! when my engine builder Chris did my rebuild i wanted both new housings fitted and apex seals anyway, as i plan to keep the car, but because it had over heated too much too often, while i was trying thermostat, pump, etc, (hoping it would be easy!) it needed front and rear plates as well, ( i decided not to have it ported as a standard RX7 has enough power for me) but even with all those parts i had an excellent price.
Why you selling her? any pics? wouldnt mind another one,

I honestly don\'t know i was looking for 7k when she was okay, so i dunno, if i knock off 2500 that would be 4500 i guess.  I think that\'s pretty fair she has got a lot of extras.

actaully ebay is a very good idea to be honest

you should make a good price on there - just dont put a reserve :)

Believe it or not i have actually had it for sale on there twice last month when i thought it was okay, with a low reserve and only had hassle.  I had one person who won the auction who never got in touch and loads of interest the second time but everyone wanted to p/x.
However i\'ve found some kits in America for rebuilding so i\'m going to let my friend at MEC have ago at rebuilding it!

Get yourself a copy of the rebuild video, from Bruce Turrentine, its cheap, and really good.

You wont find a Haynes manual , but get one for the Turbo II RX7 (about 1988 - 91), the engine is very similar.

You can also download the Mazda Service manual from ILuvmyrx7.com.

Good luck !

I think its best if its done by someone who has done a few before! Luckily i had Chris Philip in my area to do mine, saw it done too, i reckon you will lose less money in the long run if you get the rebuild done! especially with a guarantee! i was going to do my own but i\'m glad i didn\'t! how far can you get before the water runs out? very far?  There will be a rebuild video on ebay shortly,

I can get about 10miles maybe a little further depending on traffic.  The mechanic i was going to get to do the repair has never done a rotary engine before but is very experienced in race and performance engines and import stuff.  Unless anyone can recommend anyone else in the Northamptonshire or Leicestershire who might be able to undertake the work without too big a bill...???
