Title: Replacing a 13b with 20b
Post by: Freddy on November 01, 2004, 12:51:20 PM
Hello Chaps,

Be great if any of you tecchies can shed some light on this.

Basically how easy or difficult would it be to replace a 13b fd3s (single turbo setup) with a 20b Cosmo engine and to retain the current single turbo set up?

Any help would be appreciated.

Blimey, you haven\'t got it yet and you want more power !!!! lol. Cant wait to see it (and have a ride in it :) )

Would be cool with a 20b though. I may be wrong but cant you buy a kit to make a 13b into a 3 rotor engine ??

the turbo is really the least of your worries for fitting a 20B, lots of bits need to be modified just to fit the engine in the engine bay.

But if the turbo is of sufficient size for a 20b then about all you would need to do is junk the manifold and have one made up to suit the 3 rotor.

You will need a budget in the 5 figure area for it to be done properly.... Just ask 20b_boy.

thanks for the help guys.

The turbo is a T51 SPL BB, so I\'m thinking running on a 20b should make it a lot more streetable as it would also be an almost daily driver.

5 figure budget for the engine to be installed and a manifold created?

I would be providing the engine if that makes a difference?

Shaun... shhht! I was meant to be keeping this under wraps. ;)

Dont worry, i\'ll bring her up to you and you can help me with a nice ICE install. :p

20b_boy.. Shed some light :D

oops, sorry. Whens it due ?? Be interesting just to see what it\'ll do compaired to the standard type R !

I bet theres loads of stuff that needs to be done to fit one, hell what kind of clutch, gearbox, rear diff, brake system, syspension, bodywork stengthening (god i bet the list just goes on) do you need to run a 3 rotor. What are the limits of the above bits ?????

its currently having some work done to it in Osaka. Expect it to arrive in around 7 weeks.

I\'ve just got a tremac box, os giken twin plate clutch, increased sized seondary injectors and a set of ohlins suspension for it. More goodies will need to follow. Will be sticking to pfc or go microtech with 20b.

Maybe it would be ready in time for Rotorstock 05, who knows :D

I\'m looking forward to it.

Power FC doesnt have enough injector drivers or ignition outputs for a 3 rotor! And the MicroTech is pretty basic fwiw.

If you want to do it properly then you are looking at lots of cash. You can buy custom subframes for the 20B mounts or change the back plate for an FD one and pretty much bolt the block in - but these generally mean moving rack (known to induce bad bump steer) and having an extra 50kgs the wrong side of the rack too. But if you mount the motor backward you have to cut the bulkhead to clear the stock inlet manifold - or have one made. But thats not near half the job. Turbo 20B needs a LOT of cooling for one. There are loads of things you wont consider before they come along and make your life a misery :D I know! I\'m currently rethinking a couple of major elements to my car even now.

You say you have a motor already, is it stock? They really need the exhaust ports looking at as a minimum as the 20B sleeves are very restrictive. I would rebuild and port the lot in the beginning may be. Unless u have a spare engine too? :D

Good luck, its a big job to do right. You can put one in pretty easily and cheaply but its not how I want mine. Look forward to hearing progress, probably be running before mine if I keep chopping and changing like this last month!!!

hehe , I can remove you from any misery by swapping my 13b with that 20b :D

I\'ve been thinking about this, its a lot of money to throw on the FD, maybe around the £25-30k mark. If done properly.

So for starters, because the 20b has only covered 40000kms. I would have that properly installed in the FD and get rid of the T51. Probably to replace with something the sort of TA45. On the stock drive train. Maybe this would be powerful enough and therefore no need for the below. This would leave me with an engine less 20b cosmo. Is that worth owt!? ;)

Or when funds are in place. Take out the bad boy 20b. Have it ported , dowelled replace seals with ceramics etc. And then go with the motec or haltech, tremac, twin plate clutch, inginition coils etc. Not to mention the sus set up too. And a change of turbo, two GT35/40 prehaps. Who knows.

But for now, I should stop here, else if this gets in the wrong hands. I wont be approved my upcoming student loan for uni! :rollin

Dont do it! do you actually have a 20B JC, or is that hypothetical? dont leave another one to the dogs :(

That arent worth much over here, but dont let it rot some where:reallymad Sell it whole and buy an engine on its own, or sell me the body...

Ah man.. you make me sound well evil! :(

yeah, it is a 20B JC E-CCS model. Awaiting shpment.

well it could work this way. How much is a 20B JC worth here?

I am after the engine really and this would work out to be the cheaper option. How much would a good cosmo block be here? That is if they are at all available?

dudes...

if you ahve 25 to 30K to spend on the car....

why did you buy a rex in the first place... no offence like...

I mean arent they fast enough as standard  5 secs to 60 and 155 (limited) top end... 13.8 1/4 mile...maybe I am just a purist but why spend all that dosh on the car ( when you could give to me so I can go on holiday!!!)  and what line of work are you in?... and do you have a job for me...

I have a stock type r and I mean stock it used to be a company car in japan so its been kept as standard... even the wheels are the original ones.

its a beautiful car why hack about with it so much

( not having a go though )

The reason I bought a rx-7 fd3s was purely and simply because I am in awe of its body design. It just seems a timeless piece, given the fact that even 10 years later. When people see one on the street, it is an uncommon site. Not to forget an engine which loves to be driven hard... rrrr... rrrr..rrr... revs :D

One of the reason for wanting to quicken this already fast vehicle is to simply show the skyline and supra boys what this great car and the wankel engine are capable of. Also, who would say no to going more faster ;)

As for what line of work I\'m in....

Well, I\'m a student. Hope that is a satisfying answer. :D
