Title: FC Electric Radiator Fan Conversion
Post by: jetpilot on October 31, 2004, 03:00:21 PM
Does anyone have any info on an electric fan conversion for the FC, or is anyone using one, pics would be great if you are.

I\'m currently installing a 16" Pacet fan in my TII right now. I\'ll take some pictures when it\'s done.
You can find some info here : http://rotaryresurrection.com
Just remember that you have to make a choice wether to have the fan linked to the ignition or not.

Dont link it to the ignition, run it direct to its relay from the battery side of the loom, this way the fan will run until the water temp gets down to the set point rather than stopping when you switch off.

I\'ve just finished installing an e-fan and have it hooked up via the ignition untill i install the temp sensor switch (which i dont have yet). Whats this relay brett ?, i knew some fc\'s had aux e-fans but i didnt think any of this circuit was built into the car if it left the factory without the aux e-fan.

Its all a custom job done one weekend, Fan is out of a volvo 2.8 v6, relay is off of a peugot and I used an RS temp sensor to trip the relay which in turn powers the fan.  Temp sensor is rated at 82deg. When it drops below it cuts the signal to the relay and the fan goes off.  Being on a relay system it means you usually get 1-2mins of fan running after switch off.  Total cost of conversion? £2.12  :cool

I get you now Brett, i thought you meant a stock temp sensor and relay. Mines a custom job aswell, the fans out of a ford probe and is a good fit(cost £15 though :(). where did you place the temp sensor ?

Excellent info guys, just the ticket. I know this may sound like a daft question, but where do you install the temp sensor?
Did you keep the original shroud or get rid of that as well?

I took the shroud out, there\'s no need for it once the stock fan\'s gone and it free\'s up quite alot of space.

you way also want to consider fabriacting a flat peice of metal that sits onto of the front cross member and goes onto the top of the rad !

it helps air flow ( or so i have read )

as air comes thru the front grill - some of it escapes - by going up in front of the rad and escapes

if you put a plate over this area if directs the air back thru the rad - and should improve cooling

not sure how much it effects stuff - but its a cheap mod !!

stu

( i will try and dig out some more info and pics ! )

Right to address that sensor question:-

You should have a flat section on the lower ally pipe coming off of the water pump (leads to a rubber hose that goes into the bottom of the radiator) I drilled and tapped two holes into this and then attatched the sensor (dont forget to use ptfe tape on the threads or it will leak water!

Power for the relay was taken from the fuse holder. (next to coils)

As for the ducting, I found a fan that would fit inside the ducting, so kept the ducting on, its shaped so it draws the air through the radiator, without it you are not drawing as much air through the radiator.

Oh and make sure you have the fan running in the correct direction, I\'ve seen \'em fitted and running the wrong way around....(eg trying to draw hot air from the engine through the rad!)

Its a very simple mod to do.  Just remover the fan from its mounting and turn the stud down so its nice and flush with the rest of the plate and reattatch it to the block.  DO NOT LEAVE IT OFF!!!

Just found a nice simple gadget that will help anyone planning this mod. Demon Tweeks Motorsport Cat does a Electronic fan control from £40.71, simply split coolant pipe, add gadget and hey presto, temperature controlled fan, which is also temperature adjustable, available in 25, 28, 32, 36, 38, and 45 mm diameters, a relay is also included.

I have a stock Fd twin fan set up i got from a brakers, i then made a t peice for the temp sender hole on the back of the Water pump casting and did it that way.

If i was going to do it again i\'d get a new hole drilled in the casting tap it and all done.

I do recomend it, but you feel it more when you do a light Flywheel at the same time.

Mines hooked up and working fine at the moment but only via the ignition so its perminantly running. I\'ve just bought an old celica which i\'m gonna strip for parts, i had a look the other day and the sensor it uses looks like it should be just right for the job. Failing that i\'ll probably give the demon tweaks a go.
