Title: Does this look like a good RX-7??
Post by: stew205 on October 30, 2004, 04:51:50 PM
Hi

Been thinking about RX-7 for some time now.

This one has come up for sale locally to me and am going to look at it tomorrow.

Heres the ad:

MAZDA RX-7 2.6 TWIN TURBO,
J reg. 21k, servvice history, new engine with 2 years warranty, alloy wheels, CD player, totally standard apart from exhaust, recently imported, e/w, e/m, PAS, a/c, c/l, ABS, very good condition weekend car. £7,500.

The seller says it is an RZ model. Are these wheels shown non standard? And is that a standard colour???

Any other comments?

Thanks
Stew

Its not an RZ.
Wheels are not standard (and look pretty crap).
It is a standard colour.

Cant comment on if its good or not without seeing it.

Ask him who fitted the new engine Stew?  I didnt think anyone would give a true 2year warranty on a rebuild? Sounds dodgy?

looks pretty standard.

Have a read through the buying tips, there\'s good advice in there that really is worth reading up on.

I\'d also advise you to check the rubber if it\'s a recent import - if it\'s old jap rubber, replace it sharpish. Check the width of the wheels they don;t look like they have much of a dish there so either very heavy and solid, or too skinny.

RZ\'s of that age only came in black bud - that there motor is montego blue.  RZ also had bilstein suspension and kevlar backed recaro seats.  plus there were only about 140 of them I think.

Good luck going to view it, hope she\'s a goodun.

But if it is a genuine 2 year warrenty on the rebuild, thats very, very good. Even the top three rotary builders in the U.K. will only offer a 1 year on their engines

Out of interest if its only done 21k WHY would it have needed a rebuild??

Its either bull and he\'s just saying that or its been ragged to within an inch of its life and the engines gone, but this may mean other stuff could wrong with it, brakes, drivetrain etc??

Just my 2p :D

Thanks for the replies:)

He says Hurley? engineering have done the rebuild. The 2 year warrenty is only valid if serviced there.

Also the 21K Miles is only the cars milage not engine.

Previous engine died because owner didn\'t use anti freeze and this somehow damage the alloy block. Does this feasiable?

Would anybody local to Lichfield want to come and view the car with me???:p  I have a good understanding of cars, haveing worked on Cosworths and Pug205 but really don\'t know where to start with the rotaries!

Can anybody tell the model from the pic? If its not an RZ then what is it. Will have another read through the buyers tip and somebody had written an really informative post on model types, and I think I need to read up pretty quickly!

As with ANY car if no antifreeze is used you can run the risk of the coolant freezing, which = it expands and can, in worse cases crack blocks. heads, radiators etc. With the rotary housings being alloy this could happen quite easy I suppose??

It would have to be mighty mighty cold though and I have never persoanlly heard of it happening but it obviously does.

I think you need to make a personal jugment on the guy selling, is he a bit of a del boy? He\'s already tried it on about the model when he clearly has no idea about it himself or he\'s trying to pull a fast one? If he would do it about the model then why wouldn\'t he lie about the engine and why it needed a rebuild.

Personally as soon as someone tries it on with me I walk away as they are obviously untrustworthy...

Just another 2p

I\'m not going to praise or slate Hurley and can only speak from experience.

I bought my car off a guy who had always had it serviced at Hurley\'s and he\'d had a rebuild under 30k. not because it needed it he just wanted more power so had it street ported.

My car came with this 2yr warranty transferred from Hurley to me as long as I had it seviced by them. At the time I thought it a bit rich that they insisted on a £115.00 check over to pass on the warranty.

I\'ve had the car coming up to two years and recently had Pip at WGT give it the once over and as far as he could tell the engines in good condition.

So I\'ve had two years trouble free motoring form an engine job done by Hurley, perhaps I\'ve been lucky.

As I say I don\'t choose to use them because I prefer somewhere else but the quality of their work done to my engine seems to have been well done.

GSB876

Interesting read!:(   Very concerned now:rolleyes:

Will stil go and have a look but smells a bit fishy.

There is a garage local which I sometimes use and they do do work on the RX7 so I may may see if I can get one of the mechanics to check it over if it doesn\'t look too bad today.

Johnf

Sounds as though you aren\'t displeased with them so gives me some hope.

Sounds as though its a type X- anybody agree?

It was only imported 12months ago, so will have to see what catergory it fell under.

Thanks

Best thing to do Stew, is get someone off this forum to perhaps go with you to view the car as even alittle experience is better than none at all???

Also that way the guys there can\'t bull$hit you about certain aspects of the rx???

Update after viewing

Ok just got back from seeing the car. Overall the bodywork didn\'t look bad, a couple of stone chips and a small shopping trolly type ding in the passenger door.

The front bumper was a slightly different shade, is this common? Didn\'t look accident damaged.

Engine sounded good enough and idled fine with no evident knocking or nasty noisey.

Concerns Concerns

Things that did concern me though were that he had also changed the gearbox to one out of his other RX. His other RX seemed to be his pride and joy so I think this one has ended up with the worse gearbox. No nasty syncro noises on test drive but he didn\'t do any high revving gear changes.

The drivers seat had more wear than I would have expected for 25Kmiles use. It had a stich repair to the vertical bolster:confused:

Bigger Concerns Concerns

I was expected it to be very quick but it didn\'t seem to be.
It picked up nicly at low revs but didn\'t have the top end power I would expect from a 280BHP engine in a relatively small car??

From reading previous posts on here it seems that the 2nd turbo not operating correctly seems to be a fairly common fault.

Should it really pull hard high up the rev range?

I\'ve owned a couple of 300BHP cosworths and they really pull  and don\'t seem to run out of puff even though they are not as revvy.

One other thing which wasn\'t even a concern before I sat in the drivers seat is would I fit

I\'m 6ft 4 and my left leg fouls the hand brake when its released, surely some other tall people own one of these cars?:D

Didn\'t buy it, said I would let the guy know!

Gotta say this is a really friendly and welcoming website also, makes want to own an RX-7 even more now!

Yeah because they are plastic and the show the colour differently.  Most of them have a slight indentation in them too in the same place.

from my limited experience of ownership I would say there is something wrong with it.

I\'ve had 300+ cossies, 300+ GT4\'s etc and this car deffo seems the quickest once that second turbo wakes up.

In mine so far I have had a few tail end moments once that second bad boy wakes up. The back end gets all giddy and tries to overtake the front :D In the wet this is amplified 10 fold.....hehehe

I\'d say the second turbo isn\'t doing anything from what you say.

I thought the same thing in mine until I opened her up, about 5000rpm things get very interesting :rollin :rollin

Yes does sound like the second turbo doesn\'t it.

Could it just be an elictrical fault stopping the turbo from operating or is it all mechanical?
Could it be diabled on purpose to hide a prob?

You may wanna check your tyres as in the dry on a stock or close to stock rx7 you should have no issues with traction at all under acceleration.
If the 2nd turbo is working normal on a rx7 it will always put a smile on your face:D

Sorry I\'ll re-phrase, I didn\'t mean it lost traction in the dry it just gets lively and certainly wakes up :D I\'ve had a few moments in the wet though where it starts to go sideways  all good fun.....I forgot what it was like to drive a high powered RWD car :D

What the gt4 like in the wet ?
The only car that I have driven with worse traction in the wet than a rx7 is an old 1983 Y reg bmw 323i, I am pretty sure you can\'t get worse than that.
Careful in the wet though mate, probably the most common way to stack an rx7 is by over correction when the back steps out as it all happens so quick.

This is the killer because the GT4 was ultra grippy in the wet, it was probably better in the wet as you could get the back end out and do some very tasty 4 wheel power slides. In the dry it just understeered. I played around with the suspension loads in the 4 as it had the works in terms of adjustament. Loads of neg camber and it handled better than a go cart but was a nightmare to daily drive. You\'d turn the wheel and it would steer itself and the wheel would just want to jump out of your hand and go round the corner, great on track but pants driving to work  #

So, going from one of the better handling 4x4\'s to a powerful RWD is going to take some getting used to again. My old cossy (about 6 years ago) was about 340bhp and RWD and was a handful. I\'d like to think I\'ve learned a lot since then though doing about 5 track days a year. I always say to everyone with a fast car. GET ON TRACK....its THEE best way to learn to drive fast in a safe controlled manner. You can push the car as much as you like to its and your limits and learn a thing or 2 about how to prevent it in future :D

But this sometimes is in one ear and out the other, just like telling people they need the right suspension setup and brakes. No one ever seemed to listern until I psated them with less power ;) Shit hot brakes and suspension = a bloody fast car, the BHP just helps :rollin :rollin

i agree wiggy.....rite setup of sus and brakes and ur a weapon...i had a 4x4 cossie spend a lot of time on sus and brakes and less on getting big power....was runnin 360 in the end..took it to oulton and was leavin alot of expensive motors!!!!with big power! Was a very very good day!:D

I wouldnt be to worried about getting in one? Im 6\'5" and 18 stone and i get in mine fine. However you do look like a complete **** getting on and out.

Also you would definetly feel the burst when the 2nd turbo came in. It really does fly at greater than 5000 rpm.

Does your left leg not foul the handbrake lever though?
Title: Does this look like a good RX-7??
Post by: Big Stu on November 01, 2004, 08:54:56 AM
No Not at all. My leg is below the handbrake against the central console. But it doesnt interfere with driving. The only issue i have is remembering to bring my foot all the way off the clutch after changing gear since my legs are so long.

I did try a few cars and all seemed to be slightly different so maybe that is it??

I\'m sure some of the taller owners (one big advantage to being a short-arse is this isn\'t a worry to me:rollin ) have replaced the seat rails from the import cars to UK spec items as I believe they have more travel, or you can modify the existing rails. I\'m sure Scooby-Si will be along in a minute to tell the story!

yeah story is i aint dun it yet but i\'ll post the distructions again later they\'re around here n all somewhere:confused: stilll on my list of things to do & we\'re guna have a play with the passenger side first so i dont get stuck having to sit on the floor when/if we balls it up ;) lol. NB you can just buy UK seat rails although i recall they go nicely into the hundreds.....
I\'m 6\'1 with lanky legs & as you say bit of an issue but mines much better with the smaller wheel on & while heel toe braking aint guna happen it\'s not an issue & i dont recall the handbrake being an issue although i was gutted when i first went for a test drive & felt a bit squashed much better with the wheel small now it\'s cosy (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/sehrgrosse/large-smiley-046.gif) & i have got used to it & quite like it now although will as i say be getting rails tweaked so i can go all the way back for a few extra inches (maybe i should send an email out to all members with that "so you want a few extra inches" title?(http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/sehrgrosse/large-smiley-052.gif) :rollin maybe not then)
Anyway er i\'ll get me coat that probably sounds worse the way i\'ve written that & to be honest i cant remember how bad the standard wheeled one was now may of been an issue with handbrake come & have a sit in one with an aftermarket steering wheel &/or a UK car or one with modified seat rails to see if that sorts you out?
Si
