Title: Keeping the engine cooler
Post by: MintyFresh on October 28, 2004, 11:45:37 AM
Sorry to continue to bombard you guys with questions about my little KA, but untill my new rex gets here its my only toy :)

How else can i make the engine stay cooler?  Its obviously got a fan but its just not enough, plus there is little or no room left to mount more fans.  It also has a couple of cosworth vents in the bonnet.  What else can i do?

thanks

Not run so much boost?

Unless the vents have been test properly (which lets face it they havnt) they may be doing more harm than good.

I remember when they tested bonnet vents on the Focus RS and it actually raised engine tempts by quite a lot.

Air flow and low/high pressure zones are of massive importance and simply sticking holes and vents places doesnt normally work.  I wish people would realise that.

when stuck in traffic they must let the hot air escape though?

Are you after the airflow whilst traveling or whilst stationary?

If traveling then you need more forward facing vents with proper ducting at a lower level than the bonnent. (course you could use an old aircooling system form an old 911, but then the porsche crowd would be forced to kill you!)

If temps when stationary are a problem then you are going to have to look at another/bigger fan.

my biggest problem is a complete lack of space.

ideally i want more fans, but i have no idea where to put them.

Has the car got a decent oil cooler (not just one of those stupid heat exchanger things a la Golf GTI)? If not is there room to fit one up front? That could be a way to drop engine temps.

I dont believe it has one, but room really is tight. I think im gonna have to find a specialist in Essex and see what they suggest.

How hot is it running then?

Get an uprated flux capacitor!

whats a flux capacitor?

When i was giving it a run checking out what it was capable of water temp peaked at 120, and the fan was going too.

would a tiny radiator leak cause cooling problems even if there was plenty of coolant?

I heard the Libyans were getting very touchy about people using their plutonium for car parts...?  :D

These are great for keeping things cool. But you need to be careful, if you go too fast then you could end up in a small america town in the 1960\'s??

Yeah because the system is presurised.

isn\'t it running an air-water charge cooler ? if so where is the rad for that system ? is it blocking the airflow to the standard rad ?

P.S did you get round to sorting postage for that boost gauge ?

If its got a oil cooler why not try strapping a fan on it?

Seen them on a FTO dont know how much they would work tho?

Scott.

Just strip all the panels off the car, kills at least two birds with one stone....

Sorry Mike, im having trouble finding where i put the g auge. As soon as i find it i\'ll send it to you, dont worry bout postage.

I have 3 Radiators at the front of the car, the spec list i had when i bought it said \'twin radiators\', and im guessing the 3rd is for the chargecooler.

I have a feeling i have a small leak in one of the radiators but its hard to tell with the drive being so wet already.  And i guess its this lack of pressure that is keeping the temps far beyond what they need to be.
