Title: poorly gearbox, clutch or what?
Post by: scooby_si on October 27, 2004, 05:26:26 PM
Symptoms are that when cold at least in neutral when the clutch is lifted it makes a slightly grinding almost kinda noise & has previously given a faint smell of what seemed to be clutch. Revs slightly change & you can hear this slightly also..
This is negligable if noticable at all once suitably warmed up....
Now i presumed this might be related to clutch or release bearing things etc (read i dunno jack just presumed) but was pointed out to me today if it was doing this when in neutral it would be gear box related.....?(http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/contrib/edoom/puppy_dog_eyes.gif)
Any thoughts on possible causes etc?
Cheers
Si

mines does this too, do you occasionally get the clutch sticking down on the floor too?

As carl said on fduk, si\'s sounds like the release bearing. My FC did the same.

The sticking to floor bit sounds more like clutch slave cylinder tho?

only does the sticking on the odd occasion, it\'s annoying when it does cause unless you notice it early then it stalls the car when waiting at junctions - on the plus side it\'s only stuck twice and stalled once - I realised what was happening the second time and hit the accelarator just in time. the time it stalled was in traffic on the motorway! I panicked in case the beggar didn\'t want to start! fortunately second turn of the key and away she went!

so does the being in neutral have no relevance as to whether it\'s release bearing then only this eliment of it was described to me as meaning it would be gearbox & not release bearing/clutch related? ? Anyway of wording it so an idiot like me can understand (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/drowned/dork.gif) how this is working only i\'d like to understand what i\'m being told especially if it\'s incorrect.........

PS mine never sticks just as i say seems to grind when its in neutral with clutch up, mainly when i\'m off leaving turbo timer running while locking up garage etc & as i say dont seem so bad when warm.....

The sticking clutch could mean it needs bleeding perhaps? Mines done that twice before and I think it\'s down to the above.

Well changed box fluid other day & didn\'t make any notable difference to the noise & took it up to Pip V early in the day so it\'s have a chance to cool down sufficiently to make the full noise & sure enough it did & the verdict is that it\'s the gearbox namely one of the bearings but will need to strip it to get to that stage anyhow....(http://mindscraps.com/s/contrib/aahmed/azcrying.gif)
Anyone any thoughts on best plans as to getting hold of another box to replace it then get this rebuilt etc or just redo this one or what doesn\'t sound a cunning plan as it sounds like it would cost a LOT more when it goes tits up is to wait till it dies taking out a few other essential (AKA dear) bits? Although it did survive yesterdays runway abuse at least better than the tyres (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ruinkai/coolgleamA.gif) lol...
Any thoughts or spare gearboxes lying around?

Hey Si! I\'m also on the lookout for a replacement box - either whilst mines being fixed or a reasonably priced new/used one. So let me know if you find a stash somewhere!!;) :D

pah you dont think i hadn\'t already done that do ya (http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/contrib/sarge/Blurp_anim.gif) lol not many kicking about but most the main folks have or could get them done for around that figure. Was also suggested i may as well carry on using it till it goes properly tits up or at least makes a noise in gear as the folks who usually rebuild boxes will charge as much for a small tweak as for a replace all innards as such. Sounds cunning? (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/otn/confused/aeh.gif) or could more damage (AKA more expense) to sumin else occur?

I\'m doing the same Si my 5th gear sync has gone and it grinds a bit when shifting into 5th unless you change ever so sloowly...

they all do that sir

the noise is the layshaft bearing in the box. they run on synthetic oil not the glupy thick stuff so can rattle about a bit more, hence the noise. a release bearing can rattle about but if they are noisey it is usually when you actually use it to RELEASE the clutch from drive.

i know a man. he isnt quick but he is good, he built my t2 box with all new mazda bearings for £250. i had it done because i had the same noise but when he stripped it down he found nothing actually wrong. just did it anyway.

on a trackday about two years ago i made my once sweet box start to sound like shit. it still is making the same noise but hasnt got any worse. i wouldnt worry

Is that Si prob or my 5th gear sync one or both??

Tell me where this guy is! I must hunt him done and give him a gear box lol!!;)

Does he have one I can borrow whilst it\'s being rebuilt? What time did it take?

Sorry Si for jumping in!! You have first dibs mate!:D

sorry ben. thats for si. yours needs the syncro like you said. probably same sort of money plus cost of syc. he is a retired type, took me three weeks but i didnt need it back. ill ask him when i see him. i would think the cost for fd should be roughly same as fc. but wont know till its done.

didnt know the gearbox even had a 5th? ;) lol i did drive back from Pips on the M6 using only 4th actually as he said that wood be least stressful gear to use (nearest 1to1 thing) good thing no-one wanted to play over 120 or so lol
