Title: diy turbo question
Post by: james on October 27, 2004, 02:11:34 PM
any one addapted a turbo set up off a 2.3 saab?

a scrappy near me wants £80 for the turbo, pipes, intercooler, and manifold, wondering if i can addapt it?

anyone any picks of their turbo set up, so i can try and work it out?

also, do you need extra fueling,
i take it its not just a case of piping it to intake manifold, and making exaust manifold to fit, is it?

oh and my engine is a 13b na 6port

thanks all:)

That turbo would be waaaaay too small for a rotary. Personally I\'d save up for a Turbo II or something...all done for you. I wouldn\'t try and turbocharge a N/A engine. Have a look on RX7club.com in the single turbo forum....it\'ll give you some idea of what a massive job you\'re thinking about undertaking.

why not turbo an na, must be a reasonably easy way to do it, someone must know!

why would it be too small, its meant for a 2.3?!

not well up on all this, so pl;ease be patient,  i have a thirst for knowlege:D

What model Saab is the turbo off? I know the older Saab\'s used T3 sized turbos. The thing is with a rotary is that they move huge cfm\'s of air for their size. A T3 would develop huge back-pressure...trying to force all that exhaust gas through a drastically undersized turbine. Have a look at some other single turbo RX7\'s, they\'re all running upwards of T04\'s with like .96 A/R turbines on them.
A T3 would be working way out of it\'s efficiency range too, you\'d have to have a huge intercooler to try and bring your charge temps down a bit.  Plus the compression ratio of a N/A rotary would be too high for forced induction, and there\'s also the fuelling like you said. Hot air going into a high compression engine with inadequate fuelling sounds like a recipe for detonation (rotary death). I mean you could probably hobble it together and get it to work, but it would be far from ideal and could very well kill your engine in the process. If you really want a turbo you\'d be far better off finding a motor from a Turbo-II and just swapping out your N/A. Whatever you decide to do I wish you the best of luck, more power to ya for having a go!

so do turbo rotarts have low compresion rotors, like crappy piston turbo engines have low comp pistons!

cant remember  the model!
