Title: electrical question
Post by: Shark on October 24, 2004, 04:15:56 PM
Hi there,

One for anyone with Defi gauges already wired in.

The control unit for the gauges needs :
A permanent power supply [fine, get that from stereo]
A swithced power supply (ignition) [also from stereo]
A switched power supply (lights) [I\'m stuck.]

where have you guys taken the lighting power from?

Thanks in advance for help.

I dont own one of these contrapcions but you would need a illumination switch wire i would think. ( so it knows when the lights are on )

exactly right mate.
Just not sure where to find one of the buggers.

I was going to tap into the light for the foglights on the transmission tunnel, simply because that\'s easily accessible and there\'s plenty room to work.  Had enough upside down footwell shenanigans with my turbo timer.

Unfortunately there are 4 wires going into the foglight switch and I can\'t figure out which one is the switched supply for the bulb.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Cheers guys.

Brown with a red tracer - Will have a look.

My car is a \'96 so no ashtray present.
Also the cigarette lighters don\'t work so no option there.  Is there anyway to test with a voltmeter if the brown/red wire is the right one?  or should I just electrotap and see if it works ?:)

Yes mate.
Step one: With lights turned on test voltage at final point of distribution
Step two: Test same point with light turned off

If voltage appeas with lights on and disapears with them off them bingo!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Gregor,

I did what you suggested and took the wire through to the fog light switch. You want one of the small Red with Black Stripe wires.

Phil

SHARK !!
There is a illumination switch wire for the stereo. all the dash lights and dials
Audio illum is red brown on the way in and red green on the return.
This colour should be continious through out the loom. you dont need a volt meter.
Get a illumination lamp. connect the correct side to earth. conect a fly lead to the live side and search for the correct wire.
If not find the wifre on the stalk it will tally up.
Pm me if you are stuck

Do the wire colours change between years because while fitting my alarm/immoby on Sunday the 93 manual I have was totally different in terms of wire colours to mine (94)

The white wire I used for the illumination to the Defi works and I tested it with the multimeter?

I ended up fitting the entire alarm/immoby this was too because the manual was usless
