Title: Its on its way out isnt it!!! :(...thread now the offical bad luck dan club :(
Post by: Dan Norton on October 21, 2004, 09:15:32 PM
Wow, would you believe, after putting my car up for sale on saturday, and big stu off the forum here wanting to have a look this weekend, i am having this coolant / buzzer problem start on mine on tuesday.

:(

It seems there are loads of us with this problem, thats why its been intresting reading wiggys pots for the last couple of days.

Basically mine seems to be losing coolant as soon as you turn it on from cold.....when you start it up, coolant light and buzzer comes on for 30 secs (and yes it is dam ANNOYING), i let it run for a minute, then check the coolant level........and its used half a cup or so.
There are deffo no leaks in the coolant system.

However it doesnt smoke or get hot (according to the stock temp gauge), but the is a thick white residue in the oil filler neck :(

It starts fine  when warm (and cold), and doesnt have the buzzer going off when warm..... just when its cold

So...i think its rebuild time.......i\'m gonna use this oportunity to get it single turboed aswell.

Its not for sale (couldnt sell it like it is anyway), and i think i\'m gonna go a bit crazy with it.

Gurj......how much do you love your t78 setup?.......i\'m thinking the same route.

Hi Dan,
Don\'t give up on it straight away,it may just be a minor thing.
The filler area does not need to be topped right up.It allways should sit a couple of inches down the neck when cold.
Try driving it for a few days with out topping it up,while keeping a careful eye on temps and ear on buzzer.Check your expansion bottle dipstick in the drivers side inner wing both hot and cold.
Change the air seperator tank pressure cap for a new one too, they are renowned for being unreliable. It could be letting too much coolant go into the expansion tank.
Also check the expansion tank is not leaking, they sometimes do.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Carl

Hi Dan,

the T78 is becoming everyones fav no???

If you get a chance pop down to Derby and i\'ll take you out for a blast if you wish, weather permitting of course no go in the wet???

But i think the T78 setup is more than enough power, not had her dyno\'d on full boost yet but when dyno\'d at 0.6bar boost we made 342bhp flywheel, which is a hell of a lot running close to no boost!!!

In the Technical section theres a a few questions answered on various turbo\'s under the sub-section "FAO FREDDY - T88/T51R PICS" ok buddy hope that helps

Quotebut the is a thick white residue in the oil filler neck :(

Depends on how much emulsion there is. This is not necessarily an indication of anything wrong. I\'ve always had white emulsion in my filler necks, on both RXs (a 12 year old one, 121k miles, and now a 2002 with 5k miles) - no problems at all. I\'ve read other posts on forums over the years with the same white emulsion, and similarly, no problems. All I\'m saying is, don\'t take it as an absolute that there is coolant in the oil!

Emulsion often causes by condensation in the oil - builds up with short journeys where the oil doesn\'t get up to temp.

Thanks for the reply lads!

I\'m gonna do that coolant test in wiggys post .

Started the car today this morning....no buzzer
Left it at work all day, and when i went to go home, the buzzer was on for longer than 30secs this time :( ....took over a minute to shut up.

Thanks for clearing that up about the white residue in the filler cap aswell, that is reasuring, but i\'m not getting my hope up.

Gurj i would love to come to bubble inn on 24th, but i just cant risk it when i\'m not certain the engine will last the journey.
Did you get your newer injectors in yet?....and have you upped the boost yet?

Cheers all,

Dan!!

ps, had a fair few phonecalls from peeps from the autotrader aswell :( , maybe its a sign that i should keep it and go "crazy" on it, it is looking wicked now, and once i get my buckets in, new wheels on and new front lights.....she\'ll be a cracker :cool

Hmmmm....whats everyones thoughts????

...and slap a huuuge turbo on there :D

Dan,

no probs about the bubble meet as i wont be there anyhow working 7am - 7pm:reallymad

But the injectors are in and the boost has been mapped to 1bar, tbh with the weather being crap have not give it full boost yet!!!! but feels much quicker over the 70 - 140 mark!!!!!

Oh and either keep the car, or sell it and get a single turbo rx7:D

If you do pop down in the future to the bubble meet i\'ll take you out for a blast!!!!

Haha cheers scuttlerx.....could be heading that way :D

Thanks gurj......sounds awesome mate....from roll on i bet you noticed a massive differance yea?
Also on the selling it point.what would i get for it if its playing up....unfortunatly, not much even tho its in nice nick now and with it looking how it does :(

Just been on the phone to carl and he talked me thro the bleeding process (him talking while i did it:D ), so i\'m just about to go for a run and see what happens.
So....thanks carl i really appreciated that, helped out no end!!!!

Went for a run......not overheating, started first time, buzzer light stayed off.
All good,....but it still stinks of hot coolant, and there was a fine mist of steam coming from the engine bay :(

Gonna try again in the morning.

Also, my luck just seems to get worse.......on my run i stopped at sainsburys (their new beer offer.....20 bottles of stella and 24 bottle of grolsch for £20:D), theres this stoopid little speed hump on the way out the out....went over it nice and easy....then as the car comes over the other end...the rear veilside spat crashes down on the hump and just breaks off from its mountings..... .....chuffing hell...it gets worse

steam in the engine bay sounds like you have a leak somewhere, could be hard to track down if its a hairline crack though.

Post by: Mark C on October 22, 2004, 09:07:48 PM
Well i\'m no expert by any stretch of the imagination but if you have a fine mist of coolant under the bonnet it sounds to me like either a holed rad or a leaking / split hose.

Speed bumps don\'t ya just love \'em

Damn good show at the NEC. As for your car Dan. After spending all that time and money making it look good, get it rebuilt and singled and you know where you are. You could end up buying a bag of problems if you go for another car. Although if you want to upgrade then i`ll sell you the Supra at mate rate.
Title: Its on its way out isnt it!!! :(
Post by: Carl on October 22, 2004, 10:28:52 PM
Dan,
It does sound very much like your engine maybe ok and you have an external leak somewhere, get the car hot in the daylight andn try to see where the steam is comiong from.
A good way to do this is to use a bit of card as a fan and fan the steam away to try to trace where it is coming from.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Carl

Yea, thats the thing dave....if i sell it and try to source another from japan....with a single turbo set-up....i wont know what state the engine is in and i will have to spend a good chunk on it to make it look how i want  ....at least i\'m there now  looks wise :)

As for upgrading....theres nowt to upgrade too, the rx7 is the pinacle of japanese performance cars......why you bought a heavy ass supra i shall never know :rollin :D ;)

Ive had the most amazing 24 hours ever :reallymad :reallymad :reallymad

As you know about the coolant issues, then last night the rear veilside spat getting knocked off...........well it topped it off completely this morning:reallymad :reallymad

I went upto the bodyshop and dropped off my rear spat.....phoned my dad up to tell him i was on the way (was going to classic car show)...go the back way to mum and dads, get upto about 80mph....then ....BANG...i thought what the hell was that...must have been a pot hole or summit....car seemed fine so i carried on....at the next junction the guy in the van behind shouts "mate...summits just flown off your car, go back down the road, its still there".

I thought What the f%*K:mad:

Go down the road, pull up and it looks like the other rear spat....i thought bollox, and as i get out the car to look at the damage.......there it is...........THE WHOLE LEFT SIDE SKIRT HAD RIPPED OFF :reallymad :reallymad :reallymad

Went straight back upto the bodyshop, and they just couldnt believe it

I really cany explain how bad i feel right now, it seems to just get worse and worse and worse....i\'m gutted....feel like just setting fire to the effing thing after this week :reallymad

needless to say, i\'m not in any mood to look at some mint classic cars after that just happened.....so i went home!

Dan,

I\'ve not read all of this thread yet so if this has been said then I\'m sorry.

Must be something about BigStu as my car has started doing the same, after Stu was interested :rollin

Mine has very similar symptoms.

Fill the coolant up and then start the car, get underneath and have a look for water leaks.  If you don\'t see anything leave the car to warm up properly (get the heaters on full whack too)

Once its heated up, blip the throttle a few times, give the car plenty of revs.

Look under the car again, if its the rad or the coolant hoses then you should see steaming water leaking out, depending on the size of the leak, mine absolutely gushes it out once the system is hot and under pressure :(

New hoses and or a new rad and you\'ll be sorted :)

I\'ve tracked a standard rad down in the US for £140 or an aftermarket aluminium one for £220.

Hoses will rush you about £75 if your using silicone (sfs performance or samco)

Good luck

Dave

Thanks for the kind words dave.

I cant do anything at the moment because the car is still in the bodyshop cos of what happened,

But as soon as its out,i have to look straight into it......things are looking a bit more positive with it tho, carl and yourself and others seem to think it could be a leak from the coolant system, and not necessary the water seals gone.

Love the prelude you had.....thats one car i have always wanted (specially when i was in my crx stage a few years ago), i would still like one now.
What went wrong with that?

Nothing went wrong with it, nothing ever does with Hondas ;)

I had a moment on ice and banged the front, only accident I\'ve ever had and I can safely say short of staying in bed that it couldn\'t have been avoided, left me with an £800 bill to fix it up.

I swapped a 2.2 VTEC Engine into it, Wingswest Kit, Alloys, Uprated Brakes, Lowered, AGX Shocks, Fully Bushed damn it handled well - was a hard move to sell it and get the RX :) - plus the lude would do 38mpg

Hopefully you\'ll get away with it being the coolant system, the US guys I spoke to before I bought my 7 said, "change the coolant hoses, vacuum lines and install oil pressure/temp, water pressure/temp gauges and a boost guage before you even think of touching the 7"

Note the coolant hoses as their first thing to do :)

I know what you mean, if i had never seen sainsburys new beer offer in the paper...i would never have gone there, so my troubles wouldnt have got any worse!, i never shop there anyway :(

I have those gauges on the way actually, as soon as i can get a decnt 3 gauge a-pillar holder, i will get them in.

Hi Dan

My heart goes out to you after having the same sort of probs (maybe not with the body kit :( )

As far as the coolant thing goes, mine cleared up. Didn\'t do anything from Sunday until yesterday. I tell you my car should be called Christine....I didn\'t post up that it was OK because I thought I would tempt fate. So on Wednesday I was chatting to a pal on messenger and he asked about it. I said it seems to have sorted itself, then I left to pick up the missus. Wadda ya know it came on again.....ARGHHHHHHHH, this fookin car will be the death of me.

What process did Carl tell you to do as far as bleeding coz I am convinced its an air lock still

Cheers buddy and keep ya chin up :D

Post by: gsb876 on October 28, 2004, 05:01:53 PM
Geezer if you have a air pocket somewhere in the system get it seen to asap or bleed the system yourself if you know how to, as this will deffo lead to overheating and the possibility of the rebuild becomes reality.:(

Hi Gurj

I have dropped it and refilled on Sunday, this seemed to cure it as previously mentioned but now its come back, well not as bad as before.

So am I missing something on the bleed process??

Can someone (such as Carl) post up a how too list of doing it ??

Cheers
Title: Its on its way out isnt it!!! :(
Post by: gsb876 on October 28, 2004, 05:26:02 PM
OK, if you\'ve already bled the system and the air pocket has returned then theres a possiblilty of there being a leak somewhere or there being a prob with the intercooler / rad???

If the rad has a minute puncture then that will cause a air pocket to develope, i had this prob a while back when the rad / intercooler were rubbing together which made a small hole in the rad from rubbing causing an air pocket to develope??

Gurj:)

Well had a water seal go so I decided to have the enigine ported whilst out and have a FMIC. Upgraded the fuel pump, regulator and injectors - so when mapped I can up the boost and see what power I can get from the twins. When I want more power most is in place already so I\'d just need the big single turbo, waste gate and mid pipe.

I also want to upgrade the brakes, add a roll cage along with under body braces and uprated front and rear strut bars.

Unsure as to if I\'ll strip out the interior and remove the sound deadening yet!

Then I can really push for some good track and 1/4 mile times. That\'s the plan anyway!!

What\'s your plans, similar to the above?

I guess it comes down to money at the end of the day - I don\'t know how much further I can go b4 funds stop me! I think I need a sponser lol!!:rollin
