Title: Turbos misbehaving?
Post by: hmltnangel on October 20, 2004, 01:35:05 PM
Hi all, still relatively new to my lovely red RX7 so i\'m a bit worried about the turbos. Having never had a twin turbo before - I dunno what to expect.

All seems well with the car - She starts fine (99% of the time) few occasions when she needed a couple of tries but nevertheless starts all the time. However when I take it out on the road it seems almost as if one of the plugs isn\'t firing until she warms up fully. Is this normal. She never cuts out.

When warmed up - I took it for a nice redline blast down a "deserted back road" seems fine the greddy boost guage read out 1.1kg/cm max then after it got over around 4k revs it dropped to 0.6 kg/cm. This seems to happen in evry gear. Occasionally when going from third to fourth at high revs it takes a while for the turbos to kick in - seems like theres still boost but it takes a bit for it have any effect.

What revs should each turbo come in or cut out?

Could the two problems be linked? the engine is totally standard save for the big exhaust and the decat. I also dont particularly like the magnecor leads that are on the car - they dont seem to be the best things in the world. Anyone else have any probs with them?

Cheers all

look at my shiny rex.......

If you want to swing into Edinburgh i will take a look for you mate.

I have just taken my engine out, had it rebuilt then fitted it with a nonsequential conversion and uprated quite a lot so i have gained a good bit knowledge this summer, no promises but i might be able to point you in the right direction. At the moment im so busy so give me a call and we can arrange a time for you to come if you want....

Nice car btw..

Cheers

cool mate, still have your number - maybe saturday afternoon or sunday. I\'m workin on sat in gorgie so that\'d be best (the old car isn\'t the most economical is it?)

besides I use normally take an old rusty escort to work so it\'d be a good change to wind the workmates up wit it.

sounds like too much boost to start with (does it peak at 1.1 or hold there for first 4k or so?) & not enough once 2nd one kicked in thou does it not?

it holds there, then after 4k it drops to 0.6 kg/cm then holds there.

for what it\'s worth - having turbo problems of my own so doing a lot of learning at the mo.

In engine rev terms the first turbo will spool up and sounds like it\'s okay (if a little high)
between 3000 and 4500 prespool on the second turbo happens and the boost created is vented as the engine runs of the primary turbo.
at 4500 revs the secondary is opened (i.e. boost no longer vented) and both turbos run together.  Sounds like something ain\'t quite as it should be when the secondary is opened up as you\'re only getting half the pressure - would normally expect about the same or only slightly lower pressure on the secondary.

Check out the following sites for more info...

If you don\'t have the vacuum hose diagrams (there are two, one isolating pressure, one showing all hoses), drop me a PM with your e-mail and I\'ll send them to you.
