Hi all
Wheres best to plumb in the water temp gauge. I don\'t fancy getting one of them nasty things that go in the rad hose after chopping it. I would rather it was plumbed into the engine somewhere, thing is where????
Also, Wheres best for feeding wires through the firewall??
Cheers all
Hi Wiggy,
Best place is in the back of the water pump so you register temperature before thermostat opens. This involves removal of several parts to get the pump off so you can drill it, fit the sensor and replace. I\'ve already bought a water pump gasket and thermostat gasket ready to tackle the job, I just need a 1/8" tap to match the sensor thread.

Phil
Cheers Phil, sort of the place I had in mind, just didn\'t know it was possible on these having never had to work on one  Looks like the engine will be out soon anyway if this bloody add coolant thing carrys on
Which route you taking through the fire wall with the wires?
Cheers

Passenger side you have the grommets for air con pipes and loom. Drivers side you can go down the inside of the wing and come out under the dash in the footwell that way.
Cheers m8, passenger side looks a pain with the ABS unit being right over the grommet :(
Through the drivers side inner wing looks favourable ;)
Cheers
Hi Phil,
When you say in the back of the water pump, Where excactly do you mean? do you mean the pump body or pump housing?do you have a pic please.
thanks Bob
This will give a you all the info required. I installed mine in the car using this method. No need to remove pump or thermostat housing but you will have to remove intercooler to drill hole.
Hope it helps.

Thanks Kev,
Is that the right side of the thermostat, to see at what temperature it opens?
Bob
If you look at picture with two positioning options you can see the standard sender unit. Mazda thought it was a good place to.
Kev
P.S. I drilled and tapped in the Red Or Here Position
Hi Wiggy, Bob and FD3UK.
Don\'t have any pics, not done it yet.
Went through firewall at existing hole near pedals no problem.
If you follow Rob Robinette\'s method you will not get temp until stat opens.
What you think is Mazda temp sensor is I believe the low coolant sensor.
Geff at REworks told me to fit sensor in rear of pump/stat housing.
If anyone thinks I\'m wrong please let me know before I start.

Phil
what existing hole near the pedals? I couldn\'t see anything on the drivers side firewall, just the hole in the inner wing.
I didn\'t fancy this as it no doubt means having to remove the arch liner?? But its easier than trying to work under the ABS unit on the other side I suppose
So, where we plumbing in these bloody temp sensors...lol
front, back, top, bottom
Back of the water pump for me.
My firewall has a hole about 1" to the left of the accelerator cable opening, possibly drilled by the dudes who fitted the alarm.

Phil, I stand corrected, checked the manual and that is indeed the coolant level sensor.
I did however fit my sender in the thermostat housing and I get a nice linear climb on my SPA Digital gauge from cold, I.E. No sudden jump as the thermostat opens. I dont believe my thermostat is at fault as the top hose does not get hot until about 80C. I have not seen a flow chart for coolant on the RX7 to see if there is any water by pass in the thermostat housing.
Pehaps someone else can comment.
Kev.
Was going to ask this question on a new thread but all the water boys seem to be hanging round here.
Have you guys ever used the hole in the stat technique??
I have done this on all my previous cars and it works a treat. I would think on an RX7 thats prone to have trouble with high temps it would work even better???
Basically you drill 2, 3-4mm holes in your stat. This allows a small amount of water to be constantly circulating round the engine. Plus it also stops the hot cold action the stat causes.
As the colant warms up in the engine it allows a very small amount to travel out through the rad and this in turn lets cooler water in to the engine on a constant flow cycle. Its obviously not a lot but enough to drop the temps slightly which is good for track days etc.
You can buy a lower temp rated stat of course but this is still on or off. Because the constant cycle of warm water is flowing it lets everything warm up together.
I was planning on doing this after the Defi is fitted. I want to record what happens with a std setup and with the holes to compaire. Its worked great on all previous sporty cars I\'ve had and it only costs the price of a stat change :D
