Shark, I did call these people but their didn\'t seem to be anyone home - to be fair it was a bit late in the afternoon. I\'ve e-mailed them so I\'ll let you know what the score is if I get a reply.

To be honest though I\'m quite keen on the one that scooby_si has - it looks very discreet. Thanks for the pic scooby, and the link to the motomania site. However it is described on the site as a "stealth brake light". Have you just wired it up to a switch in the cockpit and passed it off as the fog light - presumably this was enough to get it through the M.O.T.?

Cheers.

no problem.  Check with a local MOT place that the brake light is bright enough for a fog light.  I always thought fog lights were brighter for some reason, but could be talking bollocks.

I would have thought that the fog light needed to be brighter, to be on the safe side I\'ll check with my local M.O.T. teting centre.

I\'m actually more concerned about Freddy\'s comments now. It has done 63,000 km\'s, so I suspect Freddy has seen this car before and knows something about it. Freddy, if you\'re out there please reply as I\'m getting nervous. I just hope I haven\'t bought a lemon, that\'s held together with blue-tack and luck!

I only wish I\'d found this forum before I decided to buy an RX-7. My only source on info up until recently was http://www.rx7club.com - it\'s a great forum but there are few UK subscribers, and no one could answer my questions about choosing an importer.

It seems as time goes on the learning curve gets steeper, and my pockets are getting lighter... I just hope at the end of it all it\'s worth it.

only just changed mine over from breeze block variety but i\'ve not read of anyone having probs with it & as you say does look far superior :god. Basically just involved pulling old one already wired up to switch in car & sticking it to me rear end  jobs a good un....
Si
PS dont get paranoid about yer bodywork i guess it was more of a general comment  but either way if your happy with it\'s condition then tiz a winner  i know having looked at LOADS of RX7\'s things like panel gaps etc & sketchy at the best of times.......

Cheers mate  ;)  I\'ll be sure to post pics of the end result when I get the car and fit the fog light.

Hi Mate,

Sorry its taken me long to get back to you. Just wanted to make sure what I tell you is accurate.

The price of this car was heavily reflected in its condition when sold in Japan this month.

Spec:

1992
RX7
Type R, Manual
62000 km\'s

Bad Points:

- At start up, more than the usual amount of white smoke is emitted which later on turns its form to black smoke, smoking continuously.
- Front Bumper is cracked, quite badly.
- Rear chassis and front has been repaired.
- Left rear wing, under, front wing, bonnet have been replaced.
- Right door, left door, front wing and rear of the vehicle has been repaired.
- The roof is faded in colour and has too been repaired (Si, this crash sound as bad as yours.............!?)
- Left rear has a fist sized dent and a few small dents on the left side and right side.
- Driver\'s seat has a couple of small rips (approx 1-2 cm) and a couple of cigg burns.
- No rear parcel shelf (dont worry, join the club! :p  )

Good Points (You do have something to smile about :) )

- Roll Bar (wonder if thats what kept the crashing driver alive!)
- 17" Rims
- CD & MD player
- Boost Guage
- Temp Guage
- Induction kit
- Big bore exhaust

From the above, its rather apparent that it has been involved in a major collision.

As for the question of being a lemon. I think so. However, its all down to how much you\'ve paid for it and if you\'re aware of what you have purchased.

I wont post how much this was, but you can e mail me on freddy__k@hotmail.com  or PM me if you like for any further info.

Hope the above helps.

Cheers

Hi Freddy, not to worry about the delay in the reply - I don\'t consider several hours a delay anyway, it\'s only people like me where my job allows me to sit on the internet all day long that can spend time replying to posts on this forum. This aside I am very grateful for your reply - thanks!  ;)

I must admit I am a little worried now... superficial imperfections like cigarette burns and no parcel shelf doesn\'t bother me that much. I\'m a smoker anyway so I\'ll probably feel more at home with a few burns on the interior - they\'ll match the ones on my knuckles :rollin

I knew the car had been damaged and repaired, I\'ve been working with a low budget and bought the car for just under £4k (including getting it in the country, taxes etc.). Luckily I have some money set aside for taking care of any body work that needs sorting.

The thing that really concerns me is the continuous black smoke. I understand from what I\'ve read in the past that a little white smoke at start-up is to be expected - but continuous black smoke, that has to be bad! right? Any ideas as to what this could be (probably a list as long as your arm)?

I knew I was taking a risk by buying an RX-7. I thought that if I made sure I got a low mileage model then I would have plenty of time to keep putting money aside for when the un-thinkable happens - the engine fails. If there is any indication that the engine is on it\'s way out, then as soon as it gets off the boat it\'ll be straight on the AutoTrader website. Which I would be seriously dissapointed about!, but a broken engine + the ludicrous insurance premium I will be paying = no RX7 for me.

Any thoughts/opinions about the black smoke would be appreciated.

Thanks again Freddy.

If there are any moderators reading this... do you think it\'s worth shifting this thread from the \'General\' section to the \'Technical - need help, broken engine\' section?

I\'d suggest getting the car to a specialist to get it checked out.  the smoke could be nothing or it could be serious.  In my experience things invariably cost less if you identify them as a problem in advance so you can take some remedial action.  :)

Not sure where in essex you are, but Shy auto (see banner at top of page) are probably not that far from you and Clive would probably be able to tell you a thing or two.

Cheers Shark. I think I\'m going to stop worrying about till the car gets here, and then just take it to my local specialist to get it checked out. I think Jimmy\'s in Norwich is closer to me (Clacton-on-Sea) than Shy Auto - but thanks for the recommendation.
