Xenon Bulbs and MOT failure due to no Headlight Washers
« on: June 15, 2019, 11:26:45 AM »
After passing the MOT test on my Mazda RX8 since 2012 I was shocked when this year it failed. Why? The MOT centre informs me that my RX8 which had Xenon bulbs needs to have headlights washers and a levelling device fitted. BTW the MOT centre that failed me is the same one that passed it for 4 previous years!!

Actual faults listed :-

"Ma - Headlamp washers missing"
"Ma - Headlamp levelling device missing"

Can anyone provide any information on this situation. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sorry to see you had a problem
As its listed  about the levelling unit, was the headlamp aim  OK, if it was then I would be maybe inclined to go to another test centre ?
All the best Clive

Is your car a 231 or 192...
I am aware that rules have changed...
Im thinking the 231 has hid fitted that yes have levelling and washer and 192 has normal bulbs no levelling and washers.....
The levelling sensor is on the front wishbone..cant remember which side...
If you 192 has been upgrade to 231 spec headlights then yes this will be a silly failure but if not then theres an anomally going on.

There’s levelling sensors on both front and rear nearside arms.

Its just Rotors and GRP

Thanks very much for all the replies.

The RX8 is a 192 (2006 year of manufacture with no upgrades). I am assuming that what the test centre has said is correct i.e. that the vehicle does not have the levelling device (it certainly does not have washers). What I am not clear about is that given that the same centre passed it on previous years (4) - is what they are now saying correct or incorrect? If correct then I have been driving this vehicle since 2012 illegally!!

Also there was no failure indication related to the headlamp aim, so I assume this was ok and as I have said the same centre pass ok for 4 previous years.

I have attached some pictures (4 zipped up due to size). Not sure if the they are good enough quality to enable you to see what you need to see. If not let me know :)

They look like 231 hid units to me...dipped is a hid on a 231. On a 192 a normal h1 bulb.....
So someone has upgraded in the past....

I think 231 where hid with washer and leveller and 192 where bulbs and no washer and leveller....

Keem mot er has spotted it...

Ideally if im right need to get some 192 units and swap.

Useful info. Thanks very much.

So it looks like I can just replace the current bulbs and have a re-test?

If its a JDM, it won't have washers or levelers and still have xenons if the original purchaser wanted them.

Mine had all these and was pulled up on it during an MOT, They saw it was a JDM (registered in the uk in 03)
and found the JDMs could come with all the bells and whistles bare the washer and automatic leveler.

Mine had the headlight level dial nest to the dashboard dimmer colour changy thing by the DSC toggle switch.

I don't know if its true for the RX8s but I was told when purchasing direct from Japan, you could choose the features you wanted at a cost
