Gravitational Waves Detected?
« on: February 11, 2016, 04:58:59 PM »
Wow, truly Nobel Prize stuff!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35524440

This confirmation of the existence of gravity waves seems to fit perfectly with loads of theoretical stuff, dating back to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

Feels a bit weird to be hearing of this in the same week as X-Files is back on the screen. Maybe the possibility of an ARV (Alien Replica Vehicle) powered by zero-point energy isn't so fantastical as it may seem  ;)

This item explains very simply how the detector works and has links to other info.

I'd have questions about whether other "artifacts/effects" could cause the output detected on the LIGO detector, rather than ONLY gravitational waves, but I assume the scientists have already done this before today's announcement...

Must've been really awesome if they picked up the whirring simultaneously in Scotland and the USA  ;D

Lovely day here today -sunshine and low wind; so toss up between taking out the RX-8, KIMI 2 or going for a brisk walk. Needed the exercise, so the walk won!

The only thing that gets me is they detected what they had simulated what it should look like out of all the background jumble.

Some amazing engineering to detect movement smaller than the size of an atom and scramble it out of all the other junk, with a massive distance between the two.
