Strange noise but only on left turns
« on: September 01, 2015, 10:50:18 PM »
I've noticed this now on the last few track sessions and it only happens on left turns. Sometimes they are not even tight bends and the noise only happens when accelerating through the bend not when just maintaining speed. It's never been enough to concern me but I'd like to investigate it while it's garaged.

It does sound a bit like arch scrape but not if you get me, I know arch scrape as it did it on the rear until I had them rolled.

I'm Convinced its something to do with steering components like a bush worn or something rubbing but tbh no idea what!!!

If anyone can through up some ideas I'll have something to start checking.

Neil, sadly I'm not surprised no answers here as this is a tough one,

My suggestion would be an arch liner rubbing and can only suggest getting the car up in the air with out the wheels on and having a good look up under the arches,

Let us know how you get on,
All the best Clive

You dont say whether front or rear Neil. Others than arch rub....things to check....wheel bearings. Caliper drag ( caliper binding slighlty after use). Drive shafts and diff whine.

OK sorry it sounds like drivers front wheel area, pads are new around so all calipers have been off. The arch liners look OK and the rear arches have just recently been rolled?

I'm stuck. On a tight turn it feels like the wheel could lock, it never does but there is deffo something catching which is why I though steering related.

I'm gonna check the tie rods too but I imagine that would knock and that's a different sound.

So left handers drivers side front ...so the unloaded side in a left hander? Id get it up on trolley jack and spin wheel whilst turning wheel.....i had this with caliper binding dead ahead ok turning exerting small pressure.as the brake hose flexed...no noise but pad caught fire in pit. Lol. Not saying it this but an easy check....plus whilst up in air you can crowbar all bushes for play. Good luck.

Yeah got confused. Sun baked head. Gotta be a bush groaning if nothing obvious.

Hi Neil, for what its worth, I experienced rubbing noise (and actual rubbing) front drivers side tyre on track. No contact when jacked up, or not under load, only when braking hard and turning, but I had 'tell tale' rubbing marks on the wheel arch liner.
My arches are rolled front and back.
If there's no obvious rubbing marks, it suggests mechanical generated noise as suggested by the guys earlier replies.

Thanks Chris, Yeah im gonna get the front wheels off and give everything a good eyeball when i get home from work. Like you say i cant see anything externally so ill check the inner arch liners for marking.
