Depowered FD3 Steering thoughts?
« on: June 03, 2015, 09:29:51 PM »
I am doing a engine conversion in my car and thinking of depowering the factory steering rack to give some extra clearance and rid a few bits from the engine bay. I wanted some feedback from any of you out there driving street cars like this as I am a little concerned that it will become very heavy to steer and I might regret it?

Thanks in advance.

To carry this conversion out safely you need a gen 2 RX-7 EGI non turbo rack as just removing the power puts strain on the rack in the wrong manner

I have been told in the past that doing it this way has led to the rack actually breaking  :(

Really? That doesn't sound like a straight swap? I presume the non-turbo gen 2 rack is still a power unit just stronger? I read up how to depower it properly, removing the seals etc. Maybe I will just stick with the powered rack if it's a.a headache!

No the EGI came in most cases as non power steering and from memory its a direct replacement for the FD rack

This is an old old FD mod so there must be trace of it out there on the internet.

Hope this helps
