04 RX8 Info
« on: April 27, 2011, 08:45:44 PM »
Hi all. I\'m after some info for a friends Dad. He lives in South Africa and has the chance to purchase an 04 RX8. Now he\'s a bit short on details but from what I\'ve gathered its just under £8000 in SA money. Its done less than 30,000 Klms from new and is mint inside and out. Now the bit that seems strange to me is he says its the 6 speed version not the 5 speed version. I thought all 8\'s were 6 speed. Did they put a 5 speed in the 192ps RX8\'s or something?

So the questions are what should he look out for on an 04 model? Any common problems at all?
Recalls. Didn\'t mazda do some recalls for the earlier models if so what were they and would they be on an 04 model?
And last but not least, What can he do to it to free up some cheap power?

Thanks

Ade

Yep - 192s are all 5 speed.

I had two or three recalls on my 05 plate - the starting motor, something to do with the fuel tank, can\'t remember them all.

Worth checking out the RX8 Owners Club site, we\'ve got plenty of stuff on there.  Although I don\'t know if there are many differences for the SA market cars compared to here.

Ah, the Holy Grail for the RX-8. Unfortunately, Mazda did a great job of wringing all the power they could out of the engine. No-one has found a cheap way of getting significantly more power. FI is the only way to go to make any real power gain, and that ain\'t cheap!

Thats what I thought. What about Air filters and exhausts etc? Is there anything in the way of ecu upgrades?

You\'ll get a better noise and if you go for a remap you might get a few extra horses but not much.  But as Casey said getting more power is expensive, F/I is one option, others have ported with some success.

Re the recalls we also had an oil cooler pipe recall in the uk, might be worth asking a dealer out there what recalls they\'ve had as they might have had different ones to us.  Plus iirr over here you can ask a dealer to check what recalls have and haven\'t been done so you might be able to do the same in South Africa.
