turbo/tuning advice
« on: July 29, 2006, 03:47:58 PM »
right, im going to be rebuilding a Turbo II soon and want to make it into a bit of a screemer....its to go in the beetle so low down torque isnt essential but i think 300BHP would scream in a bug ;)

the stock turbo is fooked so what are my options here? anyone got a stocker for sale? other options are in To4 and a gt35 turbo, ive seen the XS power T04s go for about £300! (i take it i get what i pay for)

I would probably try and find a microtech, is the lt12 much better than the lt10 and lt8?

What injectors? change the secondaries to 1000CC?

Any performance advice would rock!

300 at the wheels or at the fly.

ported with a gt35 and you should see 460 fwhp (380 rear wheel)
TO4e would see 300 rwhp but would only come in a little better than the Gt35

If you are running a micro tec i would 1000cc inj all round or maybe slightly smaller primaries but they closer they are in size the better with the micro.
I think the MT 12 just runs more injectors which you shouldnt need.

If you need 300 at the fly, ,then pick up a 2nd hand turbo II turbo for now, stick 1000\'s in the secondaries and port the engine.  You may need to slightly port the wastgate but you should see 300 fly.
Have a search, its been discussed loads on here.
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

ok.... would i require diff turbo manifolds for different turbos? ARE THE GT35/40 manifolds the same? What trim turbo should i look for?
So a microtech LT8 should suffice? wicked.... save some pennies there.
Is there any way i could put a bigger externasl wastegate on the stock turbo?

Cheers man

The stock manifold will only take the stock turbo.  Most aftermarket ones take either a T3 or T4 flange\'d turbo.  Mines a Gt35/40 with a 0.96 hot side which is quite small compared to most but works well......  ooh   errrr.

An LT8 would do the trick well.  It shouldnt be that difficult to port the wastegate on the stock turbo,  you may not even need to. I ran a big exhaust and FMIC on my stock turbo and didnt have any spike probs with the stock actuator set up so you may well be ok.  You could fit an externall wastegate but it a fair bit of work.

It may be worth fitting the stock turbo with the ecu and injectors, see how you get on.  Get it all working etc and when you get some money by a new manifold and turbo.  There isnt that much involved in swapping them.

If you do decide to run a stock Turbo for a while try and get your hands on a S5 Turbo with the twin Waste gates, it helps alot with spike/Creep.
