Supra Or Rx-7 Or M3?????
« on: November 21, 2002, 10:08:47 PM »
Hi fellow car nuts!

I currently drive an Impreza 2000 Turbo and will be changing car soon for something even faster. Trouble is what to go for! M3-great engine, superb build quality, reliable, relatively economical, boring as hell to look at!

Supra? RX-7??

I have heard horror stories about the rotary engine. The car I choose will have to be reliable enough for commuting and going out on business every day. I do 10-15,000 miles a year. Also need to fit two kids in the back but only on short journeys.

What shall I do??  If the RX-7 (and it would be a series 3) goes bang, how much is a new engine/rebuild going to cost? What are genral running costs like ie servicing etc.

Any help/advice welcome. Come on, convince me that the RX-7 is the one to go for- my heart tells me RX-7, my head tells me M3!

hi rx7 virgin.

you have an eye for wicked cars, seems odd you didnt have a skyline in there. i would have to say the rx7 is by far the best looking out of your three, as for engine trouble on the rx well.

i own a 2nd gen so im not going on my own experiance but  to my knowledge they are as realiable as any jap car ( very good ), the thing that lets them down is they need to be lets say refreshed every 50 000, 60 000 miles. dont let this put you off though.

an engine rebiuld costs, and im quoting from an rx motors ad, £1500. i think there is some fitting cost to go on as well. my advice would be look at as many motors as you can to get an idea whats out there, instead of buying the latest most expensive car you can afford get one about £1500 less than buget and get a rebiuld straight away.

you will then have a car that looks good, handles like a race car, and goes like off a shovel and you can relax in the knoledge that your new car will go on for at least another 60 000 miles.

once you own one and feel the exeptonal smooth power you\'ll never go back. as for biuld quality my 12 year old still feels soild as the day it left the factory. let your heart rule your head go on you know you want to:D

Tim at RX motors does them with new bits that are needed for £1600.00
He is the one that i would recommend cos he uses genuine Mazda parts.

Thanks for the comments guys. So how many of you out there use your RX-7 every day to go to work?  COnvince me!!

The series 3 RX-7 is easily the most gorgeous looking Jap car ever made (well i think so anyway)

Didnt list the Skyline...damn wicked car but just too ugly! I lioke the R34 but too expensive!

If enough of you RX-7 drivers can convince me that the RX-7 is a practical enough car for daily use then i might just have to do it!!

Think of the fact that the initial cost of buying a twin turbo is quite low for the type of car that it is,even if you include in your budget the cost of a rebuild then the cost could be still less than 10 k for a good one!
the key to using your car everyday is 3 things
1. always warm the engine up before you drive it hard, i have allways found that if you stick below about 3000 revs until you see the temp guage reach normal steady temp and then do a few more miles to be sure that temp is through all the rest of engine then this allows allof the aluminium and cast iron components in the engine to be even in temp.
2. allways regularly service the engine, this means change your oil and filter regularly. If you think about it, it is quite cheap to change your oil and filter every 3000 miles or sooner if you are a really hard driver,i use a local garage and buy the oil  and filter myself, take the car round to them and ask them to do it for me.Beauty of this is that you have no hasslse with waste oil,no aggro getting under the car or getting dirty.
3. if you only do short journeys then take the car for a blast every week if possible as these engines love to be revved, after all that is what they are designed for, and it reduces fouling of the spark plugs.
If you said that you had a new or rebuilt engine and followed this procedure then you should get at least 50/60 thousand miles from your FD. some people have seen over 100,000 miles, it all depends how much fun you keep having with yoor loud pedal as if the engine is running under boost all the time then it stands to reason that it wear out quicker than if it was cruising all the time at motorway speeds.
Hope that this is helpful

RX-7 is not car to be daily driver.....2 seater, too much power, not big space for luggage, not good gas mileage.......it was built like sports car and thats what is it for...racing, spirited driving, roadtrips in covertible\'s ;o)

I like my seven, but i don`t drive it daily....its not economical and daily driving is just killing your car.....cold starts, short trips...that great car just does not deserves it...

hi every1
well i think the 3rd gen rx7 is one of the best cars out there!
i\'m a very lucky 19 year old with the privelege of owning one, paid entirely by a rubbish job and my student loan and overdraft, so if i can afford the running costs then im sure you can!

m3, which model? newest 1? VERY expensive really in comparison to the seven, and yeah its a nice car, but its almost the same as every other 3 series.

supra is nice but rx7 is amazing!!!!
it is a very very rare car in england so you definitely attract ppls attention with the smooth curves etc.
ok so this makes parts harder to come by, but not that hard. there are about 5 places in the north west for example that i can think of that specialise in sevens.

depite the horror stories you may of heard, the 3rd gen was very very reliable.

jason turner was right about the engine though, i just had mine replaced 5000 miles ago with 65000 miles on the clock.
the car itself can be modified a lot, and even in standard form its very very nice.

depending on the model, type r, rb, rs, rz etc it may or may not be faster than an m3, but all are faster than the supra twin, (i think)
i have the type rb, 265hp, plus mods its now about 290, and i managed to outrun an m3 the other day.

it all depends what you want out of it. i drive my car every day and to be honest i have never been in a car so comforable and relaxing to drive, my dad drives my car more than his new jag s-type lol.
the back seats are small but will do any1 for small journeys, the boot space isnt very deep, but you can still fit about 10 shopping bags in there.
handling is second to none, and the car is very very smooth

make sure you do warm it up first if your going to push it or you can damage the turbo\'s etc, make sure you dont take it above 4000revs on a cool engine, the 2nd turbo kicks in at 4500 revs and this isnt good when its cold.

as for petrol if you push it you will prob get between 17-20 miles to the gallon, if you dont, up to about 25.

and i have to say it, POP-UP HEADLIGHTS. they are just amazing and really suit the curves of the car. door handles built into the window, it is an amazing machine.
just watch the beginning of fast and furious if you dont believe me :p

the cabin is very good for reducing road noise etc, i can hardly hear my 4" a\'pexi exhaust, get out the car and its noisy as hell.

the sound system as standard is good, you might want to upgrade you head unit thought. one speaker on the dash, two in the front doors, and two just behind the drivers seat.

you can get a seven from anywhere between 7k and 18k for an amazing done up one, just look on the autotrader website.

4 wheel abs is also a good feature it has.
got to say the rear light clusters are sexy as hell

just realised i am waffling, so i hope this helps
just going to say please please get one of these very special cars, and if not str8 away, at least test drive one and you will see for yourself how good it is!!!

yup... I\'m 19 too and whilst I can afford the car, I can\'t afford the bloody insurance - ryb2001, who are you with?

My brother has got an E36 M3 and whilst I\'m not expecting a standard RX-7 FD to be faster, it should keep up.

Actually wait, can\'t afford the car, I\'m buying a house

But next year!!

lol
im a poor northener.
used my student loan and overdraft on it!

i have the type rz, so as for keeping up with an e36 m3?!
ha, my next door neighbour has one and while racing him down the dual carriageway he was a dot in my rear view mirror!

as for which group im with i dont have a clue, fiddled it so im a "occasional" driver on my dads insurance and with full no claims its still £2600. As for occasional, bah! my dads got an r33 and i havent let him drive mine once yet, i drive it every day, just wonderful lol.
