Symptoms are that when cold at least in neutral when the clutch is lifted it makes a slightly grinding almost kinda noise & has previously given a faint smell of what seemed to be clutch. Revs slightly change & you can hear this slightly also..

Now i presumed this might be related to clutch or release bearing things etc (read i dunno jack just presumed) but was pointed out to me today if it was doing this when in neutral it would be gear box related.....?
Any thoughts on possible causes etc?

mines does this too, do you occasionally get the clutch sticking down on the floor too?

As carl said on fduk, si\'s sounds like the release bearing. My FC did the same.

The sticking to floor bit sounds more like clutch slave cylinder tho?

only does the sticking on the odd occasion, it\'s annoying when it does cause unless you notice it early then it stalls the car when waiting at junctions - on the plus side it\'s only stuck twice and stalled once - I realised what was happening the second time and hit the accelarator just in time. the time it stalled was in traffic on the motorway! I panicked in case the beggar didn\'t want to start! fortunately second turn of the key and away she went!

PS mine never sticks just as i say seems to grind when its in neutral with clutch up, mainly when i\'m off leaving turbo timer running while locking up garage etc & as i say dont seem so bad when warm.....

The sticking clutch could mean it needs bleeding perhaps? Mines done that twice before and I think it\'s down to the above.

Well changed box fluid other day & didn\'t make any notable difference to the noise & took it up to Pip V early in the day so it\'s have a chance to cool down sufficiently to make the full noise & sure enough it did & the verdict is that it\'s the gearbox namely one of the bearings but will need to strip it to get to that stage anyhow....
Anyone any thoughts on best plans as to getting hold of another box to replace it then get this rebuilt etc or just redo this one or what doesn\'t sound a cunning plan as it sounds like it would cost a LOT more when it goes tits up is to wait till it dies taking out a few other essential (AKA dear) bits? Although it did survive yesterdays runway abuse at least better than the tyres lol...
Any thoughts or spare gearboxes lying around?

Hey Si! I\'m also on the lookout for a replacement box - either whilst mines being fixed or a reasonably priced new/used one. So let me know if you find a stash somewhere!!;) :D

pah you dont think i hadn\'t already done that do ya lol not many kicking about but most the main folks have or could get them done for around that figure. Was also suggested i may as well carry on using it till it goes properly tits up or at least makes a noise in gear as the folks who usually rebuild boxes will charge as much for a small tweak as for a replace all innards as such. Sounds cunning? or could more damage (AKA more expense) to sumin else occur?

I\'m doing the same Si my 5th gear sync has gone and it grinds a bit when shifting into 5th unless you change ever so sloowly...
