Is there scope for uprated items when its time to change or is factory mazda kit best to stick with?

Has your wifes 8 had the coils changed already or is that a job still to do?

Also, I heard the 7 engine has a short life and needs a rebuild in its life, is that right and was that an issue that was carried over to the 8?

The 8\'s coils went about 37k and have been changed in August this year you can tell the difference straight way. As for the 7 the engine will not last as long as an 8 there is not as much hot being generated in the 8\'s engine. I think Clive has said that he as heard about 8\'s covering over 120k !

Ive had a really good bloke service my cars over the yrs and I trust him, I even bought my current car (Alfa 156) off his son, the thing is I checked with him to see if he was ok with servicing the Rotary ... and he said he wouldnt touch one and neither would anybody he knows which has kinda thrown me to be honest.

I think alot of people more so mechainics are wary of Rotary engines as its so far removed from everyother car that comes through their doors, I think maybe as well horror stories of over tuned, raced/raged poorly maintained 7\'s probally dont help.

Out of interest do you use main dealer, specialist or independant garage?

I service the 7 myself oil filters plugs the usual stuff just treat it like a piston engine anything a bit more tricky it goes to wgt, the 8 goes the wgt for everything to keep the service history up would not touch the main dealer around here not had good service off them.

Just a tip on the original Coils...the bronze colour Coil \'mounting plate\' in Series II (09~) R3 RX-8\'s has been modified slightly.

The area where the back of the coils burns (white) has a Gap under base plate via a channel or groove cut into and along the bronze coil mounting plate, so instead of a flat coil base plate, the latest (S2 or R3) has a groove cut into it to allow for better heat dissipation..

As far as I know if you want to keep the original Coil Pack set up you can install the R3 type base plate, here is the Mazda Part Number for the base plate...N3R1-18-105
2009 Series II RX-8 Luxury version of R3.

Oh well the time has come to part with the wife RX-8.:wave

She is going back home to Mazda tonight and getting changed for a Mazda 3 2.2D Sport 150 as Kathy needs something more economical now that she works the other side of Liverpool.

It will be a shame to see the 8 go as it\'s been a great reliable car and we have enjoyed every minute of owning it, Even when see has needed some TLS it\'s now 10 years old and still on the original engine with mid 6.5 across all rotors.

Somebody is going to get a good 8 hopefully she will go to a good home.

Here are a couple of pictures of how she looked.
