Anything Engine/Performance/Tuning related / TOTB III The nightmare!!!
« on: August 02, 2004, 10:00:51 AM »
After several months of preparation, had some final stiffening up of the differential mount, the vehicle lift at my friends workshop was out of action, spoke to Tim and he kindly offered the use of his ramp.
Spent a few hours getting things ready with lots of extra bracing and a lockup drag diff fitted, made my way home to get ready to make the 5+ hour drive to York. On the way home, had a practice launch from a standstill, hit third gear and all things went to sh$t……….she was on one rotor!!!!!!!!!
Limped half way back to Tims when it stalled and couldn’t get it started, called Tim and he towed me back to the workshop. A Friend of mine turned up and we all stood looking at the car in pure disbelief. After the numbness had set in I started to think how many months and hours I had spent getting this far just to fall at the last hurdle!
By 4.00pm we had all persuaded each other that it was worth a shot, Tim got to work preparing a new rotor and by 5.00 the engine was out the back plate was off and I handed Tim a rotor, at which point he quickly put it on the floor saying “ in all the years I have worked on rotaries I have never had a rotor so hot that I can’t even hold it!”

A new set of tips and the engine was back in the car and running by 8.30pm!! Totally knackered I thanked Tim for his help, downed a can of red bull got cleaned up and left at about 10pm, got to York at 3am and made a slight detour to get fuel, went over a set of speed bumps then the car started missing badly, it seemed to be on one rotor again!!!!!!!!!! A few seconds later it cut out!!!!!

In a panic under a small key ring torch I removed the top plugs and cranked her over. The engine seemed good. Went to check for any indications on the power fc commander, it was dead! Checked fuses relays and every wire I could, nothing!
Managed to persuade a taxi driver to tow me to the bed and breakfast got to sleep at 5.00am, woke at 7.00 in the vain attempt to fix her pulled the engine loom out, couldn’t find anything checked as much as I could and by 9.00 knew it was all over, beaten tired and gutted I half heartedly went to spectate. Thanks to David for picking me up.
Eventually got picked up by the AA at 5pm and got home at 12.30am.

The rear rotor has been rich for some time now which seems to be part of this underlying problem, when I have sussed the cause I will let you know, It will be back, but not for a while as I don\'t like rotaries very much at the moment

:o
was TOTBIII look forward to next year!

The tuning fund is very depleted at the moment, will have to go for tyres next time

I recon the only way my car will be in the 10\'s on sunday is if we tether it to the back of a skyline:)

She won\'t see a dyno this side of totb, so its down to the butt dyno, which seems fair to middlin

Will have to see how the 1/4 turn out, unfortunately I am only running stock street so3\'s so it may have a less impressive launch.
They are the same tyres I ran last year with a 13.2 and stock twins turbo\'s and an un-ported engine. So am very keen to see what improvement I get after the last year of blood sweat and tears getting it to todays spec:rolleyes:

Also have a fairly harsh Drag diff in it, which doesn\'t like corners much so the handling circuit may prove challanging :p

Anything Engine/Performance/Tuning related / Rebuild
« on: July 28, 2004, 11:12:49 AM »
I am able to offer a full engine rebuild using all mazda parts for £2050.00 New housings are extra.
I can do this over a weekend with the car being dropped off on the friday evening and driving away on the Sunday.

Definately a more cost effective way to rebuild your car before it pops to save turbo\'s housings and rotors.

life expectancy of a stock engine (3 piece tips) 45 to 55k

Had my final mapping session last night, thankfully she held together!! Thanks Jason, a job well done!
Power seems good, unfortunately couldn\'t get to the boost level that I was hoping for, ran out of flow from the turbo\'s!

It\'s a bit of a shame that some of the larger power RX7\'s arent involved, as all other makes and models are out in force.......again!

Hope to see a few of you up on Sunday to see myself and Tony  running!

It looks like a fairly impressive turnout from some of the supras, skylines and evo\'s claiming iro 1000BHP!!!

Sorry to here that mate

I can only offer my ten penneth.

I also had a engine fail just before rotorstock, also when tuning and also with good mixtures.
The only reason that was deemed the cause was Plugs, I was also running 9\'s all round.
Since rebuilding it again the engine, was fitted with a set of supercool 11.5\'s and was logged again (due to the manner of my 2 x single turbo set up, this was purely on the offending front rotor) mixtures were absolutely fine and since has been thrashed on every outing, including a fair beating down to le-mans.
I was very dubious that plugs could cause this but as the miles keep clocking up my confidence in this is growing.
These things are fickle beasts and spark plugs and leads are definate causes of their demise, once rebuilt go for some 10.5\'s and I would guess if your plug leads are good, then you will have no problems.
good luck and I hope to see you and your car at TOTB III to thrash me down the strip;)

I am ready to wire her up as soon as you guys are ready,  Can’t wait to check it out! Let me know what stage you are at and when you want me to come up.
I need to go to Jason’s for the next mapping session, if we can tie this together then it would make things easier for me.

She is up and running and going strong.............thank god!!

A fairly eventfull last few months, after it\'s untimely rotor re shaping fiasco, some cold plugs were fitted, another turbo and a heap of internal bits.
As I was a little concerned about reliability myself and Jason decided on a fairly tame map with little or no risk (if this is possible on a rotary?!?)
Anyway set boost at 1 Bar and did a fairly comprehensive road test consisting of driving fairly hard to le mans and driving very hard on the way back.
Road testing now complete and confidence kinda restored, it\'s time to see what she can do, got a profec b which I have preliminary tried and held nice solid boost.

It\'s going to be interesting to see how medium twins fair against the single\'s.

Thanks to Jason on the tuning front, drives really nicely and didn\'t get beaten by anything on the le mans trip.
Managed to demonstrate what blowing doors off really means to a friendly 300zx owner :) very satisfying!

Spoke to henning regarding the TOTBIII list today, the list is currently :

Phil Gooriah
Erdin Halil
Chris Philp (Sense Tuning)
Anthony Fleming (Sterte Garage)
Ross Juniper (Dragon Performance)
We have Max as a backup incase anyone should drop out.

I thought I had heaps of time to finish eeking the last few ponies out of her, but as anyone knows who has tried getting a car ready for such an event there 5 weeks ain\'t that long!!

What stage are the rest of the list at??

Has anyone got a barely legal pair of DJo1\'s that they will be replacing soon??

Carl,
Don\'t forget to add me to your band of merry men.
My Fd is running, and just ironing out a few oil leak issues ready for mapping next week by Jason
Engine running sweetly with largish ports
Both hybrid turbo\'s performing well and producing encouraging boost.

See you there
