General Technical / Engine Stalling Thread
« on: January 04, 2012, 10:04:29 AM »
Hi folks,

Rex has started up its old tricks with the engine cutting out again.

I got her taxed 2 weeks ago and for the first 6 days of driving it - it  was fine, and i\'d thought that my change of spark plugs and repairing a  bared wire to the ignitors had sorted it!

however last week it started playing funny buggers:

- stalled when decellerating for a small roundabout, had to leave it off for a minute, started fine.

-1 minute later stalled when coming out of a roundabout, again had to  leave it for a minute before starting.  Then ok for rest of the day.

- took it out 3 nights ago, gave it a wash at the jetwash, all seemed ok  but then it stalled when i was driving up a hill.  Managed to start OK  after sitting for a while.

- about 5 mins later stalled again when on the over-run coming down a hill, pulled over and it started OK, then just went home.

Today decided to take the inspection panel off the fuel pump area to  check the connector and wiring - all looked OK, so decided to go for a  drive.

- took the car out, went up to the garage to fill the tyres with air,  then for a wee cruise to see if i could get it to stall and it did.   came out from a roundabout onto dual carriageway and she stalled when i  was accelarating up (that\'s 3 times it\'s stalled coming off  roundabouts).

- this time though really bad, trying to start and it wouldn\'t,  eventually it would and then cut out after 10 yards of driving.   Sometimes got it to start and i would idle and it would cut out after 10  seconds, sometimes 30 seconds.  Managed to get into a junction where i  sat for a while and eventually started her again to go down the dual  carriageway for 100 or so yards for it to stall again (4th gear cruising  steadily), pulled into a layby where i tried waiting and starting,  again it would cut out on idle after 10 or so seconds.  Eventually  managed to drive it home with no more issues.

so in summary,  when \'whatever\' is happening is happening it seems to  stall in idle, cruising, overrun, neutral, in gears, after roundabouts.

sometimes i can go a couple of days with no problems, sometimes not, today was the worst it\'s ever been.

i hope all you brainy types can help me out here and advise on a sensible path to resolving this.

it feels like fuel cut when it happens at cruising speed, and it\'s  interesting that it was REALLY bad today after i had a look at the plug  at the fuel pump.

Good thread.

I went to the Factors today to get some BUR7\'s and they couldn\'t get them, the chap phoned the technical guys at NGK and they said to use 9\'s in all holes.....

General Technical / Dashboard lights

Today she cut out when i was just driving round a roundabout!  No other electrical problems accompanied the cut out this time.

tried to start her again and the engine just turned, plenty petrolly smoke coming out the exhaust, after letting it sit for two minutes, she started fine!

where are all the main earth cables?

Hey up all,

what\'s the best test for checking the turbos - floor it in 3rd gear from 30mph and get up to 4500rpm and note the boost?

Yes, like today when i took her out for a wee test, the indicator was fine, the headlights were behaving, the speedo was fine too, and there was no sudden cut out!

Hi All,

I\'m trying to diagnose a peculiar issue on my new FD3.

I picked it up today (it\'s sweet) and drove it home with no issues, then when i went out tonight things started behaving a bit odd.

I have noticed that there are electrical issues, sometimes the passenger light doesn\'t flip up, speedo is intermittent, oil guage is intermittent, passenger electric window switch intermittent...

i am wondering if these could be all tied together and are causing the engine stall that i got tonight about 3 times.

i was quite happily crusing along in 5th gear about 60 and then all of a sudden, the car dies and it \'feels\' like the fuel pump stops, or some other sort of electrical issue happens.

additionally, which dashboard lights come on at start, as i see no engine management light which comes on, although it is an aftermarket ECU - could this be why?

Engine was rebuilt 4000 miles ago.

Ha,Ha, honest, my grammer\'s tihs anyway.

there\'s more Rx in Scotland than you think, most of them are off the road due to engine faulty/lack of rotary specialisit(sp)
best thing\'s go to WGT for all your rotary needs.

I\'m based in Aberdeen,I\'m a rotarydaft/Specialist in my own right for a long time.
there\'s few guestmember here from scotland...Goldie,SSN11,wolfie1,the hat,competitionPZ...etcccc.

enjoy your motoring.

Hey up, i plan on becoming very well aquainted with the engine, i realise that Pip is the closest we have to a specialist so not too far away in Newcastle!

I\'ve owned and driven a Celica GT4 ST185 Carlos Sainz for 7 years (which is now for sale) and stripped the engine on that to replace the main bearings.

Just hope i get a decent run out of this badboy befire i have to do anything major ;)

That would be a good, funny post if it made any grammatical sense, but seeing that it doesn\'t it\'s a fair indication that you\'re gay.  Super Gay.

And thank you for welcoming me Mr. Heid.  Gaylord.

It certainly is, and it\'s the second one in scotland i\'ve found lately, the other being the 500hp monster in glasgow!
