Rotary and General Chit-Chat / Pete Barbers write up of EDC WIN!
« on: May 19, 2009, 10:31:52 AM »
Below is Pete\'s write up of the event at Knockhill where he won outright in EDC.

"well what can i say about this round other than it was fantastic, the event was by far my best to date and also my best result.

we arrived at knockhill ( scotland ) on saturday the 16th  to heavy rain and quite strong winds, all the drivers had the same feeling and that was that the event was going to be utter carnage and worst of all no spectators to cheer us on. we had an hour and a half practice session starting at 5pm and this proved to be a challenge as the conditions were not good at all, after the practice and with the bad weather we dicided to get an early night and i\'m sure many of the drivers were praying for better weather for the main event.

sunday came and the prayers were answered, we awoke to find a nice clear blue sky and a glowing sun. the event kicked off with driver practice and new driver licensing at 9am, at first the track was pretty patchey it terms of the large scattered puddles on the racing line which proved to be pretty difficult for many drivers.onto the twin battles

top 16 twin battles,

the twin battles were announced and i had a very difficult competitor, he was the ulster drift champion from ireland 3 years running and was proving his worth in the practice session, the battle went pretty well but my competitor was slower than me through the section which made it tough for me to adjust my driving style to suit, the battle had to go to a sudden death round and that luckily went in my favour as i clintched the victory and progressed to the top 8

top 8 twin battles

i went into this battle feeling pretty confident as i was starting to settle into the car and track layout, i was put against bret castle who was the 2007 EDC champion so was a very tough and well experienced drifter. this battle was once again sent to sudden death as there was nothing to call between us, i knew that this was my only chance to progress further and i had to give it my all. we both went flat out from the start line and hit 94mph at the point of pullung the handbrake to initiate the slide, i kept very close to bret and was pleased with the run but i knew once he was the chase car he wasn\'t gonna give me an inch, this run also went in my favour and i progressed into the semi finals.

top 4 twin battles

for this battle i was up against mark luney in the SVA nissan 350z, this car is truely mental and cost close to 100k to build, i knew this battle was going to be once again a close call, we set off with me as the chase car and this run was very close and the result was a 5-5, when the table was turned i once again had a good fast and clean run but luckily for me mark made a small error and therefore gave me a 6-4 advantage and along with that my place in the final.

final

by this time i was still in shock and was over the moon with the way the event had gone, i knew that the least that would happen was a 2nd place finish, i felt like i needed to just play it cool and try to put on a good show for the spectators and not spin out. i was against james russel in the DCY nissan skyline, again james is a very good competitor and trying to make his presence known, i went out in the chase run and was glued to the skyline and produced a 5-5, whowever in the chase run i was able to stretch the rx7\'s legs and gained a fairly substantial lead giving me a 6-4 advantage and the win.

this was like a dream come true for me and was a long awaited victory in the EDC,

here are a few action pics from the event,

Cheers Pete"

General Technical / Tip\'s to stop flooding
« on: December 18, 2008, 08:22:48 AM »
Rotaries with fuel injection can be easy to flood the engine with fuel, then it wont start and has to be deflooded.
Here are two things that will help, but also remember to keep your engine properly serviced.

Tips for not getting into this situation for this who are worried.

1. Try to make sure engine is warm before shutting down.( Moving the car short hops, such as your drive from garage then shutting down is not good)
2. When shutting down, hold accelerator pedal down to keep the revs up at around 3000 to 4000 rpm, then at the exact same moment you turn off the ignition put your foot fully down on the accelerator pedal, and hold it down till the engine stops turning.(Dont forget turbo timers!)

What does that do you might ask?

Well when the ignition is shut off both fuel and spark stop, but if you are at the higher rpm and then put your foot to floor it makes sure that the engine internals are dry from fuel with plenty of air going into the engine.

You should never flood it again if you get into the habit of following these two simple steps all the time.

Here is Peter Barber drifting yesterday at Donnington.
It was the 1st event of the European drfting Championship 2008.
Sadly The weather turned really wet and Pete did not get past the 1st round due to spinning twice, but all told it was good to be there and the car sounded GREAT! now the revs are over 8000rpm.

3rd generation RX-7's / FD Needed Urgently near Newcastle this sunday!
« on: March 07, 2008, 10:45:43 PM »
Needed urgently this Sunday!
We have been building a drift car for Pete Barber and we desperately need to some one who has an FD near to Newcastle who can take the car for a few hours to a guy who is building a roll cage for the drift car.
Is there anyone who might be prepared to help out?
Your car would not be damaged by this,as the guy only needs to be able to measure things to build the cage that will bolt in later on.
If anyone can help I am sure they will be rewarded with an appreciative couple of beers and I would reimburse for fuel cost\'s.( Don\'t want anyone out for a jolly from London) :Giggle

I am pretty fed up with all of the negative talk on this forum.
The club is being run pretty well in my opinion, and a pretty thankless task it seems if you ask me.
Are you getting annoyed as I am about this?
About time all of the totally voluntary work that is being done is really appreciated.
Some people just need to understand a number of basic facts
1.This is a car club (No parliament)
2.Volunteers run it for no pay
3.You  just can\'t please everyone all of the time
4.Having conferencing at AGM\'s would take hour\'s and hours if not day\'s
5.Some people are just out to cause trouble as it\'s in their nature
6.If someone get\'s banned, why does it allway\'s have to be aired?
7.Moderators have been asked at more than one AGM to remove trouble makers.trust the fact that they know more than you do about the situation, not everything should be aired for public consumption.
8.The club WILL fall apart if people don\'t lighten up a bit
9.There are allway\'s going to be people who won\'t pay membership on the principle that if others do then they don\'t have to
10.We all have a similar interest,so let\'s just try to stop making this club more than it is by all of the politicking all of the time
:Thumbsup!
