Title: Another Boosted thread FB time....
Post by: boosted on April 20, 2018, 11:12:45 AM
Well, here we go again, wasnt old enough to drive when this car first hit the road...i was 12...lol....dizzys and carbs eek dont know much about them...or FB's atall but not so long ago i knew nothing about rx8's or FD's so although daunting whats the worst that came happen....

so mate i bumped into a while back mentioned it time went on bumped into him again...then again then i got a phone number so arranged a viewing....no idea what i was looking at...then advise from Clive n Casey...another look. bit of hardballing with seller and i paid the full asking price..thats a first :)) but price was fair i believe.

so been stored in garage for 18 years, last 6 month outside....i can only find surface rust...very very nice underneath and starts hot and cold.

i will restore to oem...as best i can. need some paint in places and an mot. at present no clutch and brakes are stuck on...

Interior is very nice.

Boonet gold which have to rectified by either replacement or paint.

Blue 1 for sale too..no mot seen it start right up...pm if you want his number...seller is off grid computer wise and quite strict and looks like a seasoned negotiater....

have not picked up yet...truck off the road atmo.
so few piccys...

After you've sorted the brakes, etc, get those windscreen side trims off to check for rust in the pillars, before it's get's bad and cracks the screen (or worse!)

These pics are pretty gross, and you can see the type of plastic clip (two per side) that you need to carefully prise the trim over. There's also a philips screw at the bottom of the trims (open door to reveal). If you are careful, the clips won't break....

Had a proper looksee yesterday eve...

few jobs lol...there's bound to be more
drivers door lock is a bit tempermental.
trim lifting on top of door cards.
tiny chip in plastic on centre console.
passenger wing mirror glass abit wobbly...
brakes ceased solid needs disc and pads, fresh fluids at very least.
no clutch. pedal goes down and up. so master or slave or both.
gonna tackle this a slightly different way than last eunos restore that was off the road for 7 months as i only been driving eunos for a coupe of weeks and she has some niggles to sort and do the mot jobs first and then at least a rolling restoration i can enjoy as the summer is in front of me. so its wheels off proper looksee at brakes and clutch and make a list of parts reqd. hoping to get onit tomoz as commitments elsewhere today.

drivers door lock is a bit tempermental.
Was the same on BOTH my FB's - have to apply slight downward pressure on the keys before turning and then they operate fine. Have you tried the boot key barrel? Just taken mine off KIMI 2 and it's soaking in WD-40 as it's never worked (seized solid) - always had to use the electric dash switch to release hatch.

no clutch. pedal goes down and up. so master or slave or both.
Had that issue on BOTH my FB's too, so very common. KIMI 1 just needed a new slave, but I replaced the master as well. KIMI 2 required a new slave AND a new clutch release fork as the previous one had rusted to the guide collar and previous owner must have tried to kick it free!

That obviously required the gearbox to be dropped, so put in new clutch whilst I was at it. Tim W provided a new fork  :)

I hope your situation is just the slave!

Best way to sort your locks is by fitting  Remote Central Locking....easy job, unit cost £12 off EBay......from china.   I amongst others did it about 3 years ago & makes life so much easier.   Probably on of the things that has had the most benefit I have done to mine!

Not sure on the original battery type. I stuck in an Bosch E23 Varta Blue Dynamic Car Battery (70Ah, CCA 630A) on the basis the c same battery works fine in my RX-8  :) Having a high CCA seems a good move for a rotary.

It's a bit smaller than the original, judging by the battery tray area, so if you want the battery to fit snugly, you'll need a bigger one  ;)

E23 battery is 261 x 175 x 220mm high (inc terminals)

Hope all goes well with your overhaul back to a running state so you can enjoy.

Fun But....
Well funny ol day...started with the eunos making a screeching noise that i thought was a bearing noise from gearbox ..that got my head under bonnet wrong car...anyways drove down motorfactors rear pads on order came in at 4.20pm...but alas no pads...delisted by all the supplier...mmmm rang Clive he tried but alas no...rang Tim he had some new 1s fitted in a Elford so trip to Salisbury...doh A303 shut 2 hrs later prising pads outta of an Elford...drove home no more noises from eunos...
Fitted pads and with help of neighbour bled front caliper bigtime get rid of old fluid...then go for a pedal...lovelly and firm....but alas both front calipers solid again...i can lever pistons back in with screwdriver but not doing on own...ill work them in out again about 20 times and see...then onto clutch...tried bleeding but pedal going to floor...semi got then splurge ...as soon as pushes on fork resistance overcome...tried a quick rebuild woth rx8 inards as seal same but evident bore of slave had it...
So will ring Clive in morning...change slave and see whats whats. The fork seems fine....usual position? So i had Fun But got no where lol.
Picked rear pads up and looks like Apec our still listing pads.

With the fork handle, sorry got mixed up with four candles.

Whoops, Lets start again with my sensible hat on.

With the fork that far back it normally indicates a thin pressure plate, its either that or the release bearing is seized and jammed  forward which would push the arm back. I would go for something seized

With the slave extended with about 6mm guess left of out travel the rod is just touching the fork..sort of rattle fit which made me question the fork...i think the clutch has gone in and stayed there followed by the slave giving up...the pressure plate is then not returning the slave and fluid back to master..only nuts n bolts... better get the box off me thinks..
Thanks Clive.

Where the wheels on s3 diamond cut originally? 4 x114.3 pcd

Some countries had them diamond cut. A lot of work to keep them looking good though. Most had them treated and sealed.  Diamond cut looks good though.

S3 pcd is 4x114.3

Well i wrestled with exhaust...this header joiner rotten...fitted new pipe i had made...rather tight...nice new clamps nice n tight.
Then i flooded it...jump pack flat...nearly caught...by the time id got shogun hooked up with leads just churning fuel....deflood and new plugs fired straight up running loud at 1500rpm ...massive blow from new pipe cant get any tighter and i suspect middle silencer ....then died as ive run outta fuel....so cant confirm whether fixed clutch..theres always tomorrow. Not sure what todo with exhaust...
Get some fuel and drive into garage tomoz fingers x  just not feeling a new project atmo.

Quite normal for S3 with headers. Mine will brap away happily when it's on choke.

Are you using choke in that vid or just the idle speed turned up?  Either way, it's running very rich.

Keep the header if it's still useable because it has already freed up a few horsepowers. and ditch all of the emissions stuff. That entire rats nest can go. The only vac hoses you need are the two for vac advance on the distributor.

The car will run fine without all the emissions rubbish so long as you plug all the vac sources.

And speaking of emissions, the MOT inspection manual (Section 7.3 Exhaust Emissions) states .' ....Wankel rotary engined vehicles first used before 1st Aug 1987 are to be considesed first used before 1st Aug 1975' which means subject to visual test only when it comes around to MOT time.

No choke at all and running at 1500rpm...albeit with blow at header end..
suspect vacuum leaks fair few pipes crudly plugged around air cleaner and carb...its loud...brap brap brap. Theres no flange at either header end or start of centre sections and prior clamps real tight that has ovalised, absolute pig to get the new reducer pipe on and the headers back on the studs...will need a bit more work possibly a flexi...
Happy i got a clutch and dont have to take the box out.
Thanks was expecting abit loud and raw but its blimin loud lol. When i viewed it was quite quiet think the jouney home on trailer disturbed something. Need togo though these plugged pipes.
Got my head in the manual now.

If you are re using that old gasket, make sure that the header completely covers the two small emissions ports at the bottom otherwise you will never get the header to seal.
Ideally, order the gasket with no emissions port holes then you will get complete coverage. Not sure of the part number but available from RockAuto.

Another device which is not really needed as it's more emissions related. A lot of them become inoperarative anyway due to shorting out. They are wired in an odd way to the starter solenoid.

Still, if yours is working then leave it alone until it dies a natural death.

I can confirm the hot start motor is not needed as the wire to the starter motor became disconnected and I've not reconnected it. Engine starts fine when hot and cold.

This is the only vacuum stuff left on KIMI 2 and might help?

Video sound is much more brappy than mine. Can't really tell how loud it is, but if you had to shut it off because you though it was too loud then that isn't normal.

KIMI 2 will sit at 1500rpm on choke, but happy at 800rpm when warm. She won't start at all when cold without at least 3/4 choke, so yours must be running far too rich.

Video of the FIRST time KIMI 2 was fired up:

I ended up googling paint codes and its the only red used on an 85 fb sunrise red...its fine the whole car will probably get painted away depending on how the mechanical bits go.
The underside is very nice with all the stickers intact and no rust like the gold 1...if anybody wants the gold bonnet just say its free...go going to tip soon..Tim didnt want it...where the bolts go in for hinges 2 are useable rest is rotted out. Rust issue bonnet free!

Vac leaks won't cause fast idle but will cause rough idle.  get the motor warm then turn the idle speed dpwn to about 900 rpm. Turn the mixture screw until the motor almost dies then rotate back 3/4 turn. That's a baseline then you can fine tune it back to around 750 rpm when you've cleaned the carb and chased any vac leaks.

As for exhaust, a lot of aftermarket header systems were slip on joints and clamps. I think Doulble S did a system with flanges IIRC. In fact, if you contact Double S, they will still supply you with that system today.

Thanks Dave...ill report back gonna be a few days b4 get on it again...work and trackday prep on Westory And Fd depend on weather...ref exhaust theres a 200mm gap between slip joint of head 50mm and start of middle silencer..pipes have ovalised from exhaust u clamps so difficult to get a seal with the st/st 1 i had made...so next plan is remove and redo in mild x2 extenders welded with slip joint in middle on fresh round steel.

Anyways few piccys...1 2 3 on the cover bout 45mins so with abit more could look very nice..(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180531/f1d3e0e1a4b85c7f43a69ae12bf5b859.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180531/0cf945e6ecdaa2759337cfe1cc124c89.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180531/99f67ee6ba187775cd447f3a2dab69a4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180531/467b1eabc5f830b04415a14e3779ec38.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180531/190cc703a87972e2486440cdd0164656.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180531/95285d2c9a874911055400a3073f43da.jpg)

How odd! Some strange history there somewhere  :-\

If there are any bits you need let me know as I always over-order when I get some stuff shipped from RockAuto and have some brand new spares knocking around (brake rebuild kits, clutch slaves, exhaust manifold gaskets, etc).

Can bring stuff down to Combe if we're quick!

I'll certainly bring a gasket and I'll check on whether I have front caliper kits (should have).

Do you need two kits , one per front caliper, if I have them?

Just checked part numbers and I have 2 spare front rebuild kits. I also checked; 1982 and 1985 models do show the same part number. So Series 2 and 3 calipers look to be the same  :icon_thumleft:

Punishing me today...x4 deflood no dice.
Sparks are new and been blowtorched.

So remove plugs. Diasble coil packs. Wide open throttle and crank for 15 seconds..no more fuel vapour. Am i missing something...was hoping to diasble fuel pump..run the carb dry and then start again but there aint a fuelpump fuse?
Ive verified x4 plugs are sparking...its not even trying to fire...no grumbles or partial fires...its cranking good and strong off shogun at 2k and with mega jump leads...
Im gonna call it quits today with sparks out...
Any suggestions?

Spray Brake&Clutch cleaner into the holes to dry out the fuel, wiz it over then stick the plugs back in and see what you get.

The way things are going Emma will end up with a new car with hand controls instead of pedals.

If thats the case, I will inherit her Audi as she bought it from new and she doesnt want to let it go.

Ive had project bikes for a while now, and I dont know when Im going to find time to do them.

Might sell on a few things rather than hoarding, which may include the Leggy, if its not getting used.

Im really liking the FB and there are certain specs that I would have liked to build into a car that wasnt an option with the Rotus being GRP.

Already put the feelers out for one that needs work for when the Rotus is finished. Dont think I would ever sell the Rotus tho.

We're kind of in the hands of the gods....

Theres no cure for Transverse Myelitis, it all boils down to mother nature taking its course and we can just cross our fingers she makes a full recovery.

She can walk without crutches now, and go up and down stairs unaided. But still has limited to no sensation from the waist down and has spasms in her legs. Some days are better than others. Some days she cant even feel shes got clothes on. She does her shoes up so tight because she cant tell if they are falling off, then when we get home they have cut into her feet but she cant tell.

But you can imagine if she drives a conventional car and has a spasm, what carnage that could mean, she doesnt want to take the risk.

Shes still pumping the steriods into her which is getting her down as shes ballooning up from that.

Got a meeting with the neurologist on 10th Oct so we have lots of Q?

You're all too aware of the frustrations associated with a medical condition. All i can do is be there to support her, but most days I just feel like a spare p***k.

Glad Ive got a decent hobby to take my mind off all the crap.

Must be awfully frustrating for her, is there a help group forum for other sufferers get some ideas on what other people relieve symptoms.
Ive done the same for ibs anismus.
Chatting to Krohns sufferer other day he quit the steriods as making him ill.
Im on and even keel atmo...just having a nightmare getting referred back to consultant who actually want to treat me.
Glad you had a good hols

She’s found a transverse myelitis group on Facebook and she’s chatting to a few people on there which puts it all into perspective but she forgets how lucky she is compared to a lot of other people with it.

What gets her down the most is not being able to do the simple things, toilet antics..... I think I need the loo... hmmm think I’ve already gone but can’t tell.....

Anyway....

Yes holiday was great, missed the shed tremendously tho, just tidying the mess.

Sunday morning rounds of visiting family and food shopping. Red hot date with the shed this afternoon making NACA ducts moulds out of wood lol

Taking on board what people said about cooling things like sump, gearbox, diff, exhaust etc when you fit a flat floor.

Lots to do.

Hows the hangover? lol

BTW........... Ive got a real handy excel spreadsheet that Ive modified slightly with some formulas that plots the perfect shape and size of NACA ducts if its of any help in the future. Happy to ping across on email .

You punch in the maximum depth (The middle dimension at the top of the screen shot, if you change the other dims it screws up) you want it to be (how deep into the body work) and it calculates the optimum width and length of the duct.

The red line is the centre line and plots dims along the length. The black curve above the red line is the shape of the duct looking from above, this black line needs to be mirrored about the red line to obtain the overall shape.

Note the dims away from the red line at each of the plots governed by the red line.

The blue line underneath shows the profile of the depth of the duct at each of the given plots along the red line.

Simple stuff really
