Title: Ferrari Yellow Rx7 FB Series 3 1985
Post by: chrisj on July 14, 2015, 06:17:37 PM

A few weeks ago I was having BC coilovers fitted on my FC by Dwayne at Silver Fern Performance. While I was collecting the car, we got talking about his plans for the yellow FB sat in the corner of the workshop. So to cut a long story short, I am now the proud owner of another RX7, this one being a  FB series 3 in Ferrari Yellow.

My initial plan is to create a road legal track car with a view to progressing towards Time Attach when funds and ability allow.

So phase one of the plan is to get the car mobile and road worthy. It currently needs an engine (Original went bang), new seats (I can’t get my backside in to the once currently fitted) and new rims and tyres. (one of the wheels is damaged)

The car originally had a 12a installed. So I’m going to replace like for like with an enhancement of a half Bridgeport.

So that is where I am at, will let you know how things progress, especially with the engine .

Hi mate lovely find! could i suggest a 231 renny for in there? very easy to source and prob work out cheaper than trying to find a 12A. plus power for future track shenigans!  :)

Thanks for the advice very much appreciated. I have been considering a 13b, but kinda felt that a 12 was right for the car. However I agree with you, the extra power would be welcome. Nice problem to have I guess

ive been considering this myself tbh....just need the car  lol! dont need aftermarket ecu just a stripped down 1 from a rx8.

purist i agree should have a 12 but as it does not have 1 blank canvass...only issue is whether 6 speed box will fit in the tunnel.

Awesome looking Fb! :)

Yes, it would be nice to put 12a on her but reality is that they are getting rare. I would not dare use 12a on it, if Im planning to track that car. :/

I would put low power renesis with carbs or itb and with 6 speed box.  Im sure that 6 speed will fit on tunnel...

hi m8   I have a 12a engine that I took apart  to check the condition of & its in very good condition for age with no flaking of the chrome or scoring on the housings which is the most common problem on 12a`s now & they don't make 12a housings anymore so its quite rare to find good usable 12a housings these days  plus mine has the rare low compression rotors!  CHEERS   mick 07894 707535

Thanks for the heads up Mick but I think Dwayne who is building the engine has already sourced everything needed. But I will double check with him tomorrow.
Cheers

Time for an update

Having bought the shell. The plan was to replace the original 12a with a race spec 12a half Bridgeport, complemented with a 51 IDA and beefed up rad and oil cooler.   (This work is being completed by Dwayne at Silver Fern Performance on Deeside.) Then put her through the MOT so I can bring her home for additional cosmetic mods.
As with all projects, there has been a number of unexpected turns along the way. Being of large build, I found I needed to replace the driver’s race seat for something I could actually fit in. Dwayne has spent a lot of frustrating hours trying to shoehorn a XL seat into a tiny FB space. Happy to say he has succeeded and I fit! Next up, the wheels needed to be replaced. Luckily Mark from this forum came to the rescue with a full set of original S3 wheels.

So the plan has progressed to the point where I was allowed to start her up this morning. Talk about loud!

Next Steps – Put her through the MOT then take her to the dyno for tuning. So I’m expecting the car to be on the road some time in November. Just in time for the winter........

Well it sailed through the mot. Also had an initial tune up on the dyno which Dean kindly  captured on Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/dean.jones.3388/videos/10207160176595287/

So I have 300 more miles of running in before she returns for the final tune

Don't know yet. It was only a tuning run to set the carb. So the revs were kept under 7K. I wasn't at the dyno as the car went on a flatbed so only have the video to go off. Should be going back before Christmas and I will be driving it across myself so will be able to give you a full report then

Hi folks, after a little advice on how I can reduce the exhaust noise before I take her back to the dyno. I love the noise it makes but it's going to make me deaf. Feels like I've been at a rock concert after just 30 mins sat in traffic.  I believe The current exhaust is from an old escort rally car which is twin pipes straight through to a pre-packable muffler which has just been repacked.

Looking for a cost effective solution as my restoration budget has long gone. So do any of you guys have a view on how best to reduce the noise without compromising power and costing the earth?

Cheers Chris

From the threads I've read about exhausts. The ideal set up seems to be long primaries with a resonator on each pipe, merged into 1 just before the rear axle and then a good muffler on the back. If I'm picturing it right then you're just missing the resonators? Shouldn't cost much ;D

Thanks very much for the advice. You pictured it correctly. Will let you know how I get on with the resonators

Have a little look at the link below as either the full system or parts will make the car more liveable for you.

Hope this helps

Thanks Clive, some good options there. Will have to checkout my existing setup for compatibility with the pre-silencers . Would love the full system, may be next year

Hi Chris. That's good progress there so far. What were the wheels that you replaced? I quite like the look of those.

Dave,

Hi Dave, I believe the original wheels that were on the car where from a ford escort. They had slick tyres on for the track. But unfortunately the stud pattern wasn't an exact match for the hubs. The holes on each wheel had been ground out a little to make them fit. So not very safe really.

Lightweight windows, getting serious now  ;)

Not sure if it helps to know now, but I have a complete brand new Gen1 exhaust system sitting around without a mum or dad that's going up for sale cheaper than retail

With an imminent move to Spain I have to sell the FB. She is currently SORN as she sprung a leak in the fuel tank on my last trip out.

Will let here go for a song to save the hassle of transport or storage costs. £4500 ono

If anyone is interested please let me know.

I will place a full ad in the appropriate place later
