Title: RX8 with RX7 Race car build
Post by: Martin Price on December 11, 2012, 11:00:49 PM
Hi, following on from my previous post this is the start of the build thread for my RX8 race car.

I’d been doing track days for ages and a couple of years ago I decided to go racing so I did a bit of suspension work on my Impreza and the necessary safety stuff and did a few races with the Nippon challenge. The Scoob although down on power compared to some of the stuff I was racing with was pretty good and in the few races I did with the Nippon I ran at the front. The Nippon is good fun but I really wanted to race in the Euro saloons but the Scoob was going to need a 15k injection to get me near the front in the form of an engine and diet. I gave it some thought and I couldn’t justify spending that sort of money to end up with something that would only be on par with what some people were racing in the Euro saloons anyway. I decided to build/get a new race car and it was a toss-up between a classic Scoob with a N/A Engine and sequential box converted to RWD and an RX8 with a different engine.

As I was debating which way to jump I got offered an ex-factory backed RX8 Britcar being sold by Steve Gugliami of Gugliami Motorsport. My initial thoughts were to take the near standard RX8 engine out of the car I was being offered and fit something else as this was car had a well sorted chassis and I figured it could take some more power. Steve told me Mazda had pumped about £500,000 into the RX8 britcar project and with them racing in Britcar they had loads of time to develop the cars with paid touring car drivers in them. When I went down to view the cars I realised there were three cars on offer, the 96 and 98 car which were just as they were raced in 95/96 season and what I think is the 97 car which was being converted to a different spec to race in a higher class but Mazda pulled the plug on the RX8 Britcar project half way through the build in favour of the MX5.After going down to look at the Number 96 car I realised there was a lot more potential in the project but also a lot more work so after a bit of haggling with Steve I ended up buying all three cars with the intention of selling the other two and some of the spares package that came with them to end up with what I wanted at a sensible price.

I’ve sold the 98 car and I’m just finishing freshening up the 96 car ready to sell in the New Year.

What sort of spec are the cars currently?

The number 96 and 98 cars are as they were raced minus the the extra fuel cells and radios and the number 97 car (which is the car i\'ll be posting pics of later) is a newly prepped bare shell. Well, I put the back subframe on yesterday and we\'ve mock fitted the engine to make engine mounts and to check the Hewland SGT sequential box fitts in ok.
Just to check I can post pictures,

This is a pic of the 96 car sat in our workshop a month ago.

The paint on the car above is very faded now so its just gone in the paint shop for a freshen up. I\'ve got to go right through this car before I sell it in the new year.
Thanks for sorting photo\'s Brett

Right, I’ve give you some background on how I ended up with the cars, now on to my build, basic spec is as follows-
RX8 lightened seam welded shell with weld in cage.
420bhp RX7 single turbo engine
Carbon doors/plastic glass
Hewland SGT sequential gearbox
365mm floating disc and 6pot AP\'s front
290mm discs with 4pot Brembo\'s rear
Plate LSD
420bhp RX7 motor
Bespoke Biltsien dampers

Rose jointed adjustable suspension
Adjustable blade ARBs
10X18 rears
9X18 fronts
Ginetta G55 tires
Target weight under 1000kgs.

When I say it was an unfinished project, Gugliami hadn’t really got very far with it. The shell had been prepared and painted and it had some brackets fitted for the gearbox and that was about it.
First job was to mount the diff in the rear frame as the spine that bolts the diff to the gearbox wouldn’t fit and it was way too heavy.

The Brembo\'s came with the brackets to fit on to the rear hubs. They are a bit overkill but i opted to use them, so i got some discs and and made some bells.

I’d never made an adjustable blade type anti roll bar before, I’ve made 3 different thicknesses of blades which should give me plenty of set-up options. Blades are EN24T which I polished and sand blasted. The tube is T45. I TIG brazed the blade pivots on to the tube to keep the heat down which they recommend with T45.

I decided to use the RX8 mounts for the 7 engine because they were nice and light. They didnt like being welded much but after I flushed the welds off and gave them some rattle can they looked pretty factory.
I didnt like having to sandwich the exhaust manifold between the mount and the engine but i\'m pretty sure it will be ok.

Been working on the front ARB today, gonna have two adustable blades on this one mainly because it\'ll be easier for me to make. One will be in-car adustable via a cable. the other will adjust the from under the car.

Wow, looking very nice. :)

Is that diff and cradle from Rx-7 or Rx-8 original?

And i´m a bit curious, how much that Hewland gearbox cost?

The diff and frame is from the RX8 but I had to secure the diff housing to the frame because I\'m not running the spine that joins the diff house to the gearbox.
Not sure how much the g/box is new because it came with all the bits I got with the cars but I have a feeling they are about 14k.

Are you using the standard LIM? I would suggest getting an excessive LIM. Much cleaner looking.

I\'ve just had to do a search to find out what an LIM was, I\'m new to rotarys!
Since taking the picture I\'ve cut the LIM down so it gave enough clearance on the bulkhead, I had thought I might weld some bell mouths on the four inlets and fab a plenum round them that could be fed by a single TB.
I\'ve also been looking at a single Weber IDA inlet which could be modified to work with a single TB, not sure if this setup would be any less work than using the cut down standard LIM.
Like the look of the Excessive LIM, although it looks like its designed to run with the standard top half of the manifold which i dont want to use.
Cheers Martin

My apologies. LIM is LOwer Intake Manifold
UIM is Upper Intake Manifold

Any reason for you not wanting to use the standard UIM? From what I understand Mazda designed the complete intake system including the standard twin turbos, based on creating more low end torque/power so for peak HP it can be a little restrictive for top end HP. Now obviously your going with a single turbo aren\'t you? Do you know which turbo you are going to use?

Are you doing a custom UIM for fitment issues or??

Not technically true, Reg made upwards of 700hp on 50/50 racefuel and v-power with stock inlets and an rw throttle, made great torque too on those inlets

Loving the work and fab that\'s going into this. keep the pictures coming :)

yeah, stick with stock inlets or re items for a track car to try and get as much torque as possible :)

I didn\'t word my reply too good. Stock inlet better torque.

Does reg gain better top end with the Pro Jay LIM an quad TB?

Hi, sorry there\'s no explanation with any of the pictures, i had all on trying to post the pictures. I\'ll put a bit of a right up tomorrow night and explain how the cars progressing.
Najiru, yes I\'ve still got the 96 car, its sat in our unit waiting for me to write an add out for it.

Excellent engineering exercise from your guys Martin, please keep the pictures and info coming as many, not only here but also around the world, will be very interested in this high end build :Thumbsup!

p.s. Are you still going to compete in the Nippon Challenge next year with the Subaru again as you had some good races against the Skyline this year, mind you I\'m still surprised how the Skyline came from being a mid-field car last year to a regular winner this year.

Pictures tell a thousand words:) apart from that last one. I have no idea why your lifting it that way. It\'s much more exciting lifting it with jacks and trolleys and roll around on your back on the cold concrete floor

I presumed it was off to be dipped, proper way to do things:driving  ,

This is all so much different to how my car has been built in a lock up, the council would have objected to the roof coming off to lift the shell out  :rollin

Thanks for the comments chaps,
Hi Clive, it would be nice if we had all our lads working on the car as it would have been finished a long time ago but unfortunately it’s just Allan (the ginger youth sat in the car checking gear lever position) and myself when we have a few minutes spare between jobs.
Building race cars isn’t our business we are sub-contact machinists, it’s just mine and Allan’s hobbies although it is nice to have the whole workshop (including overhead crane) at our disposal. The car hasn’t progressed at all over the summer as I’ve been racing the Scoob but seeing it on its wheels has gave us a massive boost.
I’d like to think I will do some Nippon rounds next year as they’re a great bunch of blokes and the French trophy’s really taking off for Steve Vince which my car roots are in but I’m looking at racing the RX8 in Classic thunder if it’s as quick as I think it should be.
I was asking Jim (Skyline driver) where his recent pace come from at Oulton. At Donington last year from memory he was lapping about 5 seconds a lap slower than me, since then my Scoobs lost 100kgs and were about on the same pace now! I think his car has lost a lot of weight, gained some aero but the biggest improvement is his driving. It’s sometimes frustrating watching him drive away from me on the straights but you can’t take anything away from him, he builds and spanners his own  car so fair play to him.
I must admit we only found your build thread on the RX8 forum last week and I’ve only just found it on here. Carl told me last year that a customer of his was building a FD powered RX8 but that was all I knew until I found the threads. Your car looks great, it would be interesting to compare notes like how you went on with exhaust/turbo clearance with your steering column? Or are you concerned about how low your exhaust is going to run as its goes past the diff/rear frame? We were also really interested to see you’ve retained the drive by wire throttle and are using the original ECU, it really got us thinking about which way we should go with management on  my car but we’d already put a lot of work into the cable throttle peddle and we’d bought the 90mm Jenvey.
Good luck testing at brands, I’ll look out for your updates!
Cheers Martin

Looks a very nice build and i was spectating at Combe this year and the Impreza was very impressive to watch. In fact the Nippon Gt series is definetely 1 of the most exciting to watch. Looking forward to 2014.

We’ve had a bit more progress with the RX8. It’s been a bit frustrating lately because at this point in a build it’s easy to get lots of jobs 95% done leaving the 5% which is the ball ache part which we’re fighting to avoid at the moment.
The fuel systems nearly done and we’re just waiting for some clips to fasten the pipes to the tunnel and some more bulkhead fittings from Torques to finish the job.  The in tank pumps turned out nice in the end after we decided to do away with the whole of the original pump mount and make our own. The pumps now sits right on the bottom of the tank meaning they will drain every last bit out.
The mounts are just a nylon top hat sleeve which I split down the middle.

Yep Syvecs, a mate did me a good deal on it but I have to say, its appearance isn\'t great, nothing to mount off and no coms port. I\'ll reserve judgment until we start mapping though, everyone says they are a top piece of kit.
I\'ve just mastered uploading pics off my phone so more frequent updates should follow. Cheers Martin.

That turbo support has been cut up because we\'ve re-engineering the exhaust manifold, when I say re-engineered i mean cut up with an angle grinder and re-welded!!!!
Shame because we liked that too, twoz made from titanium!
We\'ve had to cut the gear lever support up too, which when I made it was our fav part of the car. We\'re having to change so much stuff at moment it\'s doing my head in!
More pics to follow.

Thanks, turbo\'s not big really it\'s a 60-1 which I\'m told is small for a rotary, will do about 450bhp. I\'m looking for just over 400. Cheers Martin.

Struggling again with my lap top so apologies for multiple posts. I\'ve now reverted to my phone!
We\'ve decided to junk the RX8 steering rack after connecting it up to a battery and seeing it go straight onto right full lock. Our plan was to use a stand alone electric power steering controller but in my eyes trusting one of these is something I decided I couldn\'t do. We\'re now fitting a Mk3 MX5 rack which is a conventional hydronic type.
I\'ve enjoyed making dash and I\'m really happy with the results, just need the wiring sorting now and I can get it flocked/painted.
Dry sump wasn\'t straight forward as well. We expect the std pump to pump a lot less than a conventional pump but when tested it pumped double which limited our dry sump pump choice. We opted for a big pace twin scavenge pump which meant we could use the std pressure pump.
More pictures to follow soon.
Cheers Martin
