Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Jono FD3 on March 28, 2010, 11:24:51 AM
Well, after going to an event the other month with a mate, we both walked away thinking, that looks fun & wouldn\'t mind having a go! so we sat down for an hour & ran through a few potential cars we could abuse, but we wanted to be different & not use the usual suspects like the silvias, bmw\'s & volvos!

Mk 1 starlet: too expensive
Mitsi starion: too expensive
morris marina: to gayyyy
moggy minor: can\'t murder one of them!
Subaru justy with front props removed & diff welded!

then I thought about the skip! basicaly it\'s a pick up my sis bought cheep to cart the building rubble in to the woods from the development they have been doing over the last 12 months! so yesterday we got it running & got the box sorted! anyway, here she is at the moment:

slight update!
We have been buisy at it in the evenings! Diff is now welded, interior thrown out & bucket put in, all painted bar tailgate, induction kit, cosmetic stickers, engine serviced, new brake lines bipassing the rear load sensor valve so we now have very excited rear stoppers! LOL. anyway, here is how she looks now:

interior striped:

seat in:

Induction sorted:

Warning sticker:

cosmeticaly all done:

All we have to do now is drop the front end, sort the exhaust, evict our miss fire and pad the seat, then it\'s skid time! LOL

What you recon guys?

she will probably drop about 2", but it will still look the same as we are going to be running 185/55/15\'s on her instead of the 225/70/15 that are on her now! LOL

Well, we had our first event today & it didn\'t go very well :(
Truck has awesome potential for the drifting as it is very progressive, but the thing is, after our first run (4 laps) our fuel pump packed up :( basicaly there was rust in the tank that clogged the fuel pump & filter, we searched everywhere for a pump but ran when they gave us a price of £120! we decided to clean ours & snapped the terminals off it :( then we got lent a pump with no fittings! 2 hrs later we had fittings, only to find that the pump was for carb & not injection :( so we put it on the trailer & called it a day at 3:30pm after about 5 hrs faffing trying to get a pump to work!

Anyway, here is a pic before we loaded it on to the trailer to go tot the event:

Well, we had another go..... the morning was a desaster! the welded diff broke free so we ended up with a std diff again :( so we took it off the track as one of the guys had a welder with all the trimmings, but unfortunatly we didn\'t have any power!!! but eventualy the track owners son turned up & took us to the track workshop at 1:30pm. the end result, 2pm diff was welded & we were back in the game :) got there & there were 3 roll overs while we were gone, one guy was about to go to the medical center & another lad stuffed his car in to a bank making it a possible right off!! which ment the truck was out on the track for a solid hour and a half giving the crowd something to cheer at:

Unfortunatly the welder we used on the diff was a little small so it didn\'t hold out long and we had to put it back on the trailer, but we proved all the doubters wrong & we now know she skids! but we need a new clutch as this one is nakerd and then weld up the diff again so it resembles a molten lump of steel!

She\'s an Isuzu John.... not sure if it\'s the same vehicle mind as it was sold through so many brands that I know of: Isuzu, Honda, Holden, Bedford, Vauxhall, and some in the US!

Well a slight update on this project :), as stated above, the clutch was fried at the last event so got a new one for £40 & fitted. Welded the diff properly.... suprising what a mess 180 amps can make of a gear set LOL! We then desided to add a little safety to the truck.... 4x4 off road style LOL!!

After work I was at a loose end the other day as the old man ran off with the keys to the workshop, so I desided to cover the cage in the dayglow vinyl instead of painting it! hasn\'t turned out too bad (just don\'t look too close! LOL) but unfortunatly I ran out befor I could do the rear stantions & diaganal bar :( Anyway, here is a pic as it stands at the mo..... what you think?

bit of a monster update this one!! LOL

we have been improving the poor truck yet again!
the full steering system has been chainged to give us alot more steering lock and we have aulterd almost every joint on the steering to give us less turns of the wheel!
originaly we had over 5 turns of the steering wheel lock to lock which gave us this much wheel angle:

but after the steering swap & the mods we have done:

it now has an impressive 3 turnes lock to lock & now has this much angle:

so this will make holding a long drift alot easyer as we won\'t have armes frailing around like loonatics in the cab anymore, so hopefully things will be alot more composed!!
Also now we have got powersteering to help things out, and tonight I was mounting up the pump, all we need now is a belt!

Then we have the new steering wheel which I made up today:
Cut the spline off the old steering wheel
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/truckin%20sideways/Photo1538.jpg)
Positiond it up on the new wheel (was from a boat! LOL)

Welded it all up & then fitted it to the truck (also put a drift line on it to indicate straight ahead position):

Now the truck has a plastic rear window & 4 point harnace to boot!!

Also had a play with a big set of 4x4 wheels I had knocking around for the hilux project! 15" x 10" with a +41 offset!! so basicaly 7" of dish! LOL they look epic!! now on the hunt for a second set to run on her!

Ha wicked little project & looks alot of fun, watching your video would def say looks like you need more power as she is struggling to break traction, get some more power from her & get some solid diff & engine mounts in her & she\'ll be a drift slag!

Post by: Jono FD3 on July 15, 2010, 05:43:23 PM
haha... we are looking at turbo for next year!!
but it\'s the lack of skill at the mo! LOL. Live rear axle so no diff mounts, just good old farmer leaf springs & solid axle... but yea we will have to get better mounts for the engine & box... probably get a block of nylon or something & make a set up for her!

Bit of a Major update this as we haven\'t posted here for a while! Following posts are from another site, so apolagies if it doesn\'t read too well!!

Well, what a weekend! Did a full day in the office on Friday, then got called in to do a night shift on the refinery, no sleep & straight through Saturday moding the steering! end result... epic steering & one totaly washed out jono:cry:
Anyway, here are a few pics on the job we did, unfortunatly we didn\'t get many as I just wanted to get it finished!

Extended the pitman arms on the steering box & idler arm:
Nice bit of welding (even if I do say so myself!)

We then put it all together & found the steering arms sat right where the shocks need to be! bugger!! so we had to take the link arm off & cut that to get the bars infront of the shocks. Dumb ass here welded them on wrong, so had to cut them back off to do it all properly! Anyway, we got around the issues & refitted it again, only to find we are going to have to make a mount for the bottom of the shock and move it back 1"
The end result is about 45 degrees of steering lock (which I think is prety good?? correct me if I\'m wrong!!) but the big bonus is, we have gone from over 5 turns lock to lock with keep fit steering, down to 4 with power asistance, then with the lock mod  we have done, we have alot more lock (probably another 20 degrees (as it had 4wheel drive hubs with CV joints)) and also got the number of turns down to 3 lock to lock!

Before the mods
(Awaiting a pic from the truck forum of a std lock)

After mods:

set of 15 x 10 deep dish 4x4 wheels.... what you guys think??

Standard lock (before mods)

New improved lock:

new drift wheel in the making!

New steering wheel all sorted & fitted to the truck:

New powersteering pump mouting:

Pump fitted, just need to get a belt now :)

Well, after another week of mayhem we have tweeked the beast again! LOL
We now have slightly lower ride hight on the rear & stiffer springs, New Magnetic name tags for the rear so we know who is driving in the pics as there are 2 of us sharing the truck. Added a bit of safety to the doors in the way of Nascar door nets which allow us to run with the windows down on hot days & know that should we roll, our armes won\'t end up under the truck mangled!
And we have also invested in a set of deep dish rims as we both loved the look of the off road wheels on it! Not quite as mental as the above pics, but they are still 15 x 8j with about 5" dish on the outer face :) should fill the arches..... and a bit! LOL

The difference in the old wobbly springs & the new ones from the front of a hilux we fitted:

It\'s now that stiff we can change 3 wheels in one go using one trolly jack!!

Magnetic dayglow name tags:

The new wheels are the rears from this hilux:

Should make things a little more interesting come next sunday, all we need to do is put some working shocks on!!

well, we finaly had our shake down after all the mods, & OMG what a difference! we could actualy put the truck where we wanted to.... to a sertain degree!! steering was pimp, the angles weren\'t too shabby eather! LOL.... quite oftern at full lock & in control which I was pleased at!
anyway, here are a few pics & a short vid.....

And the vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aCG1QY6cU8

Next on the list is a hydrolic hand break, then we should be able to give the clutch a bit of a breather! LOL
What you all think??

Oh yea, next on the list is an Impreza turbo bolt on for more go :)

This is by far the most brilliant thread I have read. What is the pick up? A hilux? And is a diesel? Would be brilliant if it was. Keep the updates coming, I will be checking constantly. Is it making an appearance at rotor stock?

no... she won\'t be at RS matey, although we did think about taking her up! LOL maybe next year when we have a blower attached to it!
Originaly it was a 2.3 Bedford Brava (basicaly an Isuzu P\'up sold under licence) the engine was changed some time in it\'s past for a Vauxhall 2.0 8v 115bhp, and as a result goes a hell of alot better than the 2.3 carb 82bhp engine! But we haven\'t quite got the grunt at the mo, hence the home-brew turbo mod, we should be good for about 180bhp then :)

This reminds me of mate that put together a car for the drag strip not drifting. He bought a decent sized turbo ff eBay for a quid, got a renault 5gtt carb, a boost controller, some ear defenders with a bit of pipe attached to the engine to listen for knock, my dad porter the head and inlet, then my mate bolted all the bits onto his polo 1.4. Went to a dyno session with the polo owners club and a achieved 118 bhp! All of the polo owners were amazed and there was only one polo that made that kind of power but had had thousands spent on it. My mate spent no mrs than a few hundred quid!

Can\'t beat doing stuff that doesn\'t cost a huge amount for a lot of fun.

Oh and I forgot to say it spins the wheels up in third!

He now has a rwd car that he is going to bolt a turbo to and see how they get on with power for that

Edit last post. Where it says 118 bhp it should read 208 bhp. Don\'t know how I managed that mistake. Must have been tired.

Well, here\'s a quick update for those interested!!

We managed to get the box sorted.... turnd out to be the pin that activates the reverse lights! It managed to get jammed behind the selector rod in the box & put us ut for the day!! anyway, box was sorted & refitted on the thursday, hydro made & fitted on the friday & skidded on the Saturday! all I can say is... OMG what a difference!! Up untill now we have done one tyre a session... this last one we did 7!! we were carrying alot more speed in to the skidds & holding some nice angle through out the drifts! we also managed to snap out steering wheel in the morning, but managed to repair it with 1/2 a roll of gaffa tape! Propper motor sport! LOL

Anyway, here are some pics.... coments on the angle & in general all welcome!!

a little update for those interested:
a few parts I\'ve been hauding over the last 2 years finaly finding a use:

Fuel pressure reg (just need a gauge for it)

TD04 turbo from an impreza (cheers Joe ;) )

Turbo elbow from an old stainless Scooby system I cut up for the RX7:

and finaly, I\'ve desided to turn the Janspeed tubular manifold in aggys post in to a top mount turbo mani.... basicaly we wont have to doctor the turbo in any way and the turbo elbow will be poinging the correct way:

well, turbo manifold has now been started :) well when I say started, the deconstruction stage is complete! the stainless 4 branch manifold has now been cut in to its componant parts, removed thestock manifold on the truck, so tomorrow I can bolt the flange to the head & make a start on the tubing! hopefuly it wont take long to tack everything up. then I can break it down to seam weld every joint (think there might be a few :( )

anyway, enough blab... time for some pics:

Roughly where the turbo will sit (battery will need relocating to in the cab I think!)

Manifold off the engine:

Stainless manifold ready to meet the grinder!

Componant parts ready for tomoz:

Also did a few new stickers for her to make it look more like a genuine drifter (Although we might get shouted at over this one! LOL) :

Oh what an evening! working away in the shed cutting the pipes so the fit.... then whent out to weld it all together & OMG why is it all white! LOL
anyway, got the thing tacked up so it resembles a manifold now, just got to fill a few little bits in and seam the lot up & then it\'s all set to get put on :)

This is what I walked out to after cutting & prepping:

and the final item all tacked up (just got to get the mounting flange & fit that, then we are done!

yesterday I seam welded the joints in the pipes and put the colector on to the manifold. All I\'m waiting for now id the flanges that my Bro inlaw is knocking up for me in work, then I can cut the vertical pipe to length, weld the flange on, then it\'s on to the exhaust!
Only thing is, yesterday we found that the rad had split in several places due to the big freeze the othe week :( so now we need a new rad aswell! hopefuly that will be soerted out by aggy today, then we can start fitting the intercooler and oil cooler..... after that it\'s just oil lines & we can start her up and have a listen to what she sounds like :)

larger injectors (already in) fuel pressure raised to 3 bar and a ecu chip (which conveniently is already there), just need to rotate it to sort out the ignition timing then we are good to run up to 0.8 bar! LOL

mmmm now there\'s an idea.... not sure if the RX will be running then as the engine is on borrowed time at the mo :( so if she isn\'t well enough to make an apearance, then the truck will show it\'s ugly face! LOL

Slight update from today.... nothing to mega, but got some done! LOL
1st, we now have wipers that work and don\'t squeek like a .....!! retro fitted a wiper system from a Isuzu trooper 3.1 :) and also mounted up the inter cooler :)

suprisingly I had to take the bumper off.... which was suprisingly heavy!!

which made the front end look very naked! LOL
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/truckin%20sideways/Photo1721.jpg)

Drilled a few holes and mounted the cooler up.... it\'s on the wonk slightly as the inlet & outlet pipes didn\'t quite sit where I needed them to :(
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/truckin%20sideways/Photo1722.jpg)

Bumper hanging in place and makes it look almost like a truck again!

also swapped the headlight duct to the other side as that is where the intake for the turbo is going, and as a result there was a nice hole driverside for the Oil cooler to sit in the headlight recess!

Inner wheel arche modified for clearance on the IC pipes (lump hammer & scaf tube LOL)
bloted the IC back in with the pipes attached, Mounted up the Oil cooler properly so that is all set, just need to get the oil lines made up with a take off for the turbo feed. Then we started to put it all back together making it look like a truck again!

And plumbed in the fuel pressure reg:

Proceeded with the pipe work today and managed to get the IC all sorted & plumbed in along with the air flow meter and what not!! desided not to run a blow off valve as I kind of like the turbo chirp you get with out :)

Some pice:

Turbo still not in the correct place as I am waiting for the flange to arrive, but it\'s not a million miles away.... boost pipe all ste to IC:

Turbo is going to drop about 2" from where it is in the pics:

Air Flow meter plumbed in too..... bit of a bodge with the pipe coming from the IC to the AFM as it goes from a 50mm pipe to a 65mm pipe, so I improvised! LOL
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/truckin%20sideways/Photo1730.jpg)

Then we desided to cut the bumper to allow air flow to the IC and made a black mesh to make it look good!!

The desaster struck :( we were drilling the holes for the cable ties to mount the mesh when the drill bit broke and went straight through the IC :(
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/truckin%20sideways/Photo1733.jpg)

I\'ve been given some quick steel to try and fix it, so I hope to god it holds as I realy can\'t be arsed to try and find another IC like this! LOL
next job is to get the flanges for the turbo & exhaust so we can mount the blower & make the boost pipes up, fit the oil drain to the sump & then the exhorst!
Also got to  change the bottom ball joints on both drivers & passenger side as they are totaly shot...... then we are good to skid another season!

Post by: Jono FD3 on January 14, 2011, 03:50:10 PM
well, got the oil cooler lines & cooler all mounted up this morning.... all that is left to do on the oil side is to drill and tap the sandwedge plate to fit the turbo oil feed and weld a return to the sump..... then we can get the other bits sorted:
Exhaust system
fuel pressure
rad
water lines

Aso got some heat wrap for £5 off the bay so will be wraping the down pipe & manifold to protect the wireing for the engine, then we can turn the key and go for a skid! LOL

Oil lines all set for the sandwedge plate:

did a bit of propper welding today :)
Exhaust manifold finished & turbo fits a dream (although we might need a bulge in the bonnet to clear the actuator! LOL) down pipe finished, looks like it grew there and the sump has been moded aswel with the oil return welded in place!

Oil sandwich plate is having a fitting tapped in to it for the oil feed for the turbo, so hopefuly all we need to do now once these bits are fitted is the rad, little mod on the boost pipes and the water feed for the turbo!

Pics of todays work:

and under the truck it fits like a glove :)

and the oil return pipe welded to the sump :)

I\'m now in work on the tug boats for 2 weeks so thought I\'d bring something along to relieve the down time we get...... slight hick up with that as I did it the first morning on the water LOL so now I have nothing to do for the rest of the 2 weeks I\'m here!

Anyway, what I did today:

Shocking how little 10 meters of 50 mm covers isn\'t it!!

so they are all finished & set to go on the truck :) rock on 2 weeks, then I can get realy stuck in to it & hopefuly get it all up and running for the first event at Pembrey on the 13 Feb!

1/2 the mid section sorted ( ran out of light to get a decent pic of the completed 3 meter beast! LOL )

Oil sandwich plate fitted with oil temp sensor and oil cooler lines:

Turbo oil drain all fitted and looking good :)

Water lines to the turbo all done along with a daws device so we can adjust the boost pressure when we feel brave ;) ..... wires thrown ontop of the engine so looks a bit of a mess! LOL
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/truckin%20sideways/Photo1782.jpg)

intake system all done, boost pipes all done, exhaust all sorted & cleaned out, all new gaskets fitted, cooling fans fitted (just need to sort the wireing out for them) coolant filled (with anti freeze! LOL) so all we need is the oil feed fitting for the turbo then we can fire her up!

Pics of how it looks now:

Here she be on test day... the only issue we had was blowing off of boost pipes, so going to sort that today, then up the boost to 0.8 bar from the 0.5 we have at the mo! Anyway, here\'s a vid  not too good I\'m afraid, but it goves you the idea... need to mount the camera further out from the truck so you have a referance to see how sideways it is! LOL

tsch tsch tsch, gota love that BOV!:chat:Thumbs-up:Thumbs-up Get the camera mounted further back on the bed, should give some great angle shots.

Turn that boost up aswell.

How many tires are you going to go through now with more power?? hmmm lots more i hope.

Great work, looks loads of fun!

last event we did 7 tyres with no turbo, so I can\'t see it being any les than 10.... probably shred them alot faster this year too as there is a longer corner at the top which is about 40mph when your in the turn, but wheels will be doing about 70 ;)
Going to be making some camera mounts to fit on to the cage next week, so there will be lots of odd angle footage looking back in to the bed, over the roof at the bonnet, inside the cab and under the truck too :)

Underneath shots sound good, can see what going on with the axle then, if it\'s tramping or anything like that. And also how much smoke you can chuck out.

Post by: Jono FD3 on February 24, 2011, 01:08:19 PM
yea, it was an anti clockwise track and due to lack of power we couldn\'t swing it down the straights very well.... and now the track has been aulterd a little and with more power we should spin 2 out at a time :)

Post by: Jono FD3 on February 25, 2011, 11:56:21 AM
haha, that would be the power steering, but to be honest it looks alot closer in the pics than it actualy is ;) there\'s about 250mm between the turbo & the tank... but it\'s by the cold side.

Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on February 25, 2011, 12:08:31 PM
For 650 that he has spent there\'s no point putting anything else in there until something goes bang, but if it does I\'d get a big cast iron block v8 to help with the pendulum effect when flicking from angle to angle. Lol

When I was at a RWYB there was a hilux running a massive out the bonnet V8 with a supercharger and a mad max style air scoop hehe I would say it would be cool for that truck to be a sleeper, but I think the bright orange external roll cage is a bit of a give away :D

Or you could have gone the merc transporter route:

haha, power wise it\'s probably about 130 at the mo, but when the boost creeps up she should be knocking on the door of 170 all going well!! more than enough in that thing! Unfortunatly she isn\'t road legal or it would surprise alot of people now..... and I think putting a V8 in it would be epic, but might just bend the rusty chassie in half! LOL

same engine matey, just we had a slight issue after the engine froze over the winter and it resulted in a shredded head gasket, so pulled the lump out to change the clutch to something that can handle the power too.... so we now have a custom 6 puck race clutch in there :)

This keeps getting better and better!!

How much did you fork out for the clutch? I know a clutch company local that can take your current friction plate and make it into a ceramic one, they bite very strong and eat into flywheels fairly quickly over normal friction plates but for £95 you can\'t go wrong!

very good indeed, amazing how cheap stuff can be got for, especially when you look at the price of stuff for an FD!!

lol, funny you should say that...... I measured it the other day and the cross member sits about 70mm off the floor and that was with out the engine in!! It\'s just cos it\'s got the 4x4 wheel arches for the big tyres it looks high, but the chassie is as low as I would like to take it as I don\'t want to end up beached on a pebble! LOL

Next is to sort out the water injection this week then its away to go with more go!!
tied up a few loose ends today, got the powersteering back up and running, wired up the rest of the sensors for the wondergauge and everything seems to be working as it should.... at the mo! also finished the el-cheepo Water Injection and all is working by the looks of it, although we do have a dodgey relay, so got to sort that out tomorrow, then tuck her up till the ODC round at pembrey at the end of the month!

The workings of the WI, sensor, relay and injector:

Holy crap you were kidding when you said it was low!!

Where exactly is the WI? Preturbo? And is it mounted on the first bend in that picture?

Hopefully you feel a difference in the midrange torque with the WI even if it is just a small amount.
Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Jono FD3 on May 08, 2011, 10:05:39 PM
Haha, yea, alot lower than it actualy loos from the outside! LOL
WI is preturbo and on the 90 degree bend pointing at the turbo...... basicaly some sites said to mount it as close as possible to the compressor wheel, and others said to mount a distance away, so I thought I\'d compramise! LOL The nozzle tip is about20cm away from the turbo, so should be all good.... I hope, eather that or it will be a rebuild alot sooner than I planned! LOL

Well this is a good way to learn about WI. I will putting WI on my rx4 but I want to stick a cheap turbo on a mini engine with a good ignition system and see how far I can take power levels with WI on it.

Theo my damage you may cause will be to the blades if your spray isn\'t fine enough. But you will discover that prety quickly

Cool,Great thing about these engines is that the bottom end of the C20NE, C20XE and C20LET are thesame. Cilinder heads can be exchanged. Motormaounts are all thesame so plenty of upgrade choices :)

Correct me if im wrong, but you can change/swap internals too, lots of options... And its quite good engine too. (easy +200bhp) And there´s lots of options where you can find that engine. (calibra, astra, kadet, vectra, omega...)
Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Jono FD3 on May 10, 2011, 01:49:01 PM
yep, the pistons from the 20xe & let fit it along with rods, the XE pistons are forged aswell which is a bonus, but they need machining to drop the CR, so this will happen if a rebuild of the bottom end is needed or we melt a piston! prety sure the 16v head fits too, but you can get over 400bhp through the 8v unit, so it\'s going to stay! haha!

well, sad day... the truck engine is dead.... blew the hell out of it at the last event and didn\'t even have a chance to do my ODC run :(
so it\'s being pulled apart, all the turbo & Vauxhall parts are being sold (if anyone want\'s anything?) and going to drop a 3.5 V8 in to it running a big holly carb, tubular manifolds and a crane 286 cam through an SD1 gearbox for a reliable 200bhp!!

I think you need to find a bigger v8 than that old boy. Find yourself a knackered old trans am. 400ci 6.5 litres, take all the emmissions and antismog off it and you have yourself 360hp really easy. And you could run open headers or even through some cherry bombs?! Lmao!!!

I got a complete running car for £500!!

How about Beemer V8´s? 3,5L, 4,0L and 4,4L. They are quite cheap and they have pretty good gearboxes...

this engine & box have come at a price I cant resist!! the guy turned to me and said, do a stainless exhaust for my wifes Mk1 golf and you can have the engine, gearbox and all the bits I\'ve got spair! so got a spair set of heads flywheel, clutch propshaft and a few other bits!! Managed to get a full stainless system off a Mk2 golf for £40 deliverd, it will need a slight mod to fit, but nothing I cant handle!

Rover V8s are a great engine and should make for an interesting drifter.  Just watch out for the old camshaft being worn and porous liners, although the liner problem didn\'t affect the 3.5 greatly.

Cam is an aftermarket Crane 286 so shouldn\'t have an issue with that :) and bors I shall be looking at closely as they need honing due to the engine being sat with out the heads on :(, so it\'s going to be a full strip down, check over and rebuild before she goes in the truck :) then rock on some V8 skids! LOL propper tyre smokes then.... but till then I\'m going to be using a 3.6 XJ6 all going well!

Well, this poor thing has had a hard 6 months rehab!
Basicaly the engine blew the topend and dumped oil from every bottom end seal available!! but OMG did it go like a :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored:! running actuator pressure  (should have been 0.5 bar) but turned out to be pushing 1.2 bar when I got a gauge on there! LOL Anyway, did the first round of the ODC at pembrey and qualified 11th over all and 2nd in class (which upset a few people) Pembrey ODC round 1 vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXvDUxiA69c&feature=fvsr

then rd 3 the top end went, so no vids from there as a result :(

So after that I had a hissy fit and was considering scrapping it all together! then after a week of thinking it over, I though sod it, lets bring her back! New colours, new name and new running gear!! little did I know what was waiting around the corner...... rust, and plenty of it :(

Started with the dash... from this:

To:

Took the tub off and found this:

Smallest hole was about 300mm long!!

So orderd some steel, broke the grinder out and got stuck in:

Chassis legs all replaced and gusseted:

Then I though, well, while everything is off I\'d 4 link the rear end:

Then painted the wheels up in the new colours:

Rolled her over to weld the underside and paint everything:

Rear end stiffness is good :)

Now on to the front end! LOL
New suspension system resulted in me needing some more space behind the wheels, so wider track was needed...... bottom ball joint spacers to gain 40mm more each side, and some fresh custom top arms:

TVR Gaz Gold fully adjustable coilovers front and rear:

Front shock mount ready to be fitted:

end result:

And a shed load more lock available as a result... just need to mod the hubs:
old:

New:

Had to shift the bottom suspension mount from where it was in this pic as there was too much leverage on them, and the springs were fully compressing :( but all sorted now and looking good!

The new ride hight :)

New front end stance:

replaced the shagged out steel on the front bumper for something a little more aggressive aswell:

New exhaust system almost there, just the front section to do when the engine is mounted finaly!

Also bought a set of 30mm steel hubcentric spacers for her to get the rear close the the wider front track, but not sure if I should run singles at 30mm each side or double up and have 60mm!! shall see what it looks like with the tub on I guess :)

That is all...

Just thought I\'d put up a few pics of the motor as I\'ve said what is going in her :)
As I got the engine:

Then I broke her down to find a milder cam in it than I was told :( but still it\'s a cam!!

then took the heads to work to give them a clean up and a bit of porting :)

Engine block built, cleaned and painted:

And all in one piece ready to go in :)

In the bay, and things are a bit tight, so mods were needed!

Right hand bank headder needed to be alot closer to the block, so cut and shut that (hopefully it will fit now!)

and then a heatshield to protect the clutch and starter:

Engine in it\'s new home, does need a little tweek to get it straight, but space looks prety tight in there! LOL
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/Photo2450.jpg)

Engine and box need to drop back about 20mm driver side and 40mm passenger side to square things up, but should sit prety sweet... even the bulkhead has got a recess the correct size
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/Photo2451.jpg)

Engine mount needs to be cut and the plate welded to the original rover unit
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/Photo2452.jpg)

and the lack of space on the headder driver side..... passenger side isn\'t going to be mutch better eather! LOL
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/Photo2453.jpg)

People can\'t criticise using a rover v8 considering that it has been used in a huge variety of vehicles, and has been a popular choice for many sleeper cars. It is light weight and produces more than enough power than you need to smoke wheels.

I say it a good choice mate, should smoke the wheels as soon as you set off.
Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Will66 on May 06, 2012, 12:17:05 PM
What he said!

They\'re very light and make good power, also they\'re simple and there are loads of upgraded parts for them.  If you can jury rig an oil cooler into your set up and go for regular oil changes or upmarket oil then they\'ll run longer and harder.  I\'d think a baffled sump would be worth while too, just to prevent oil starvation on those reverse entries! :)

Even if it lunches itself though you can get good ones for beer money, imagine finding a nice 5.0 TVR long block from a crashed Griffith for a few hundred notes, re-jet your carb, beefy fuel pump and you\'ve got an easy 320 bhp + and more torque than you could shake a dirty stick at.  No shortage of smoke then!
Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Jono FD3 on May 06, 2012, 08:11:26 PM
I thought they were a decent engine, granted not massive power for the displacement they have, but plenty enough torque for what I want! LOL

set up right, my 3.5 should make 200ish... guy on the v8 forum has the same engine with a slightly bigger carb and is making 220 at the wheels which I thought was prety good!

Title: update :)
Post by: Jono FD3 on May 30, 2012, 08:27:48 PM
woop woop, got a full day on the truck today, all the oils are in, cooling fans wired up, starter hooked up, oil warning lights hooked up, all that\'s left is a switched live to the coil and the fuel lines.... then I can stick the dash back in and see if she sparks in to life on the weekend all going well :)

Also changed the rear shock towers as they were running too upright and the shocks were topping out with the weight of the truck on them.... now they compress about 20mm and I\'ve still got to fit the bed, so they should be running about half way in their travel!

Battery all mounted up:

And the new prop
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/Photo2477.jpg)

Also swaped the oil cooler to the drivers side headlight as the oil lines were running over the water pump pully, and didn\'t realy want to risk chewing through them!!

That is all for the mo, got to pick up the pipe on friday to finish the exhaust on Saturday then I\'m hopeing that I can take her for the first drive in 12 months!!

bit of an update on this now.... haven\'t been here for a while!!

once I dropped it back on it\'s feet I realised I had a slight ground clearance issue with the lower suspension brace..... so this needed to be removed and modified!!

ended up cutting it out and welding an inch box section between the lower arms about 40mm higher so it now has some ground clearance! Also had to order new springs for the front as they were prety much compressing fully!! so she is now going to be running 550lb springs on the front with no anti roll bar to help steering clearance!

Also fitted the dash back in and got all the lights to work as they should.... just hope th gauges work properly now!

Then it was on to tub repairs!! only worried about the visable panels, so they got sorted and braced up:

then fitted to the chassis..... looks prety sweet now :)

Love the look of the rear now..... something nascar about it?!

The final stance of the truck on the floor:

Little bit of wheel poke now the rear has the 30mm spacers fitted to bring the front/rear track inline:

and the last bit I did before coming back out to work was the bonnet..... can\'t run a V8 an a std bonnet!!

That\'s where we are at as of today..... but back on land tomoz so hope to get it all finished off by the weekend as I\'m suposed to be doing drift taxi with it on Sunday!! just hope the engine runs well from the get go!!

you and me both matey.... and we shall find out tomorrow :)

After a load of messing around it\'s finaly alive!!

Got all the cosmetics done this morning, as the starter popped lastnight :(
got that back this afternoon and got her to sing (althought the timing was way out, but now it\'s set it runs prety well!) off to test it tomoz and run her in for 100 miles, then off to pembrey on sunday to do Taxi rides with a few of the other lads!!

Primerd:

Painted:

Stickerd:

And a prety crap vid of it running.... sound is too deap for the camera to pick it up! LOL
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/th_Video0080.jpg) (http://s35.photobucket.com/albums/d192/jonathandudley/Black%20sheep%20-%20truck/?action=view¤t=Video0080.mp4)

Excuse the running of the engine in the vid... the carb was drawing air so had a high idle.... all because the guy who I got the manifold from didn\'t put a gasket between the manifold and carb adapter plate, and also stripped 2 threads so it was the weight of the carb making it seal! all sorted now though just to put the carb back on!

Got the taxi day done today and broke it!!
UJ fell apart and broke free.... broke the mount for the centre bearing, shatterd the UJ and bent the prop :(
new prop going to be orderd this week, and stiffer rear springs as it was bottoming out on the chassis!!
but on the plus side, it handles a shed load better, turn in is crisp and sharp, the angle I can get too and pull back is insain, the engine ran well and sounded prety good too although it is very quiet!! so glass is very much half full :)

Nice, at least it\'s just the propshaft.

Take a couple of the silencers out of the exhaust and run a lairy cam, that will make it noisier.

Looks much better now it\'s scraping on the floor. :D a bit of body roll going on, can see you both in the one picture leaning into it. Lol. Can you install a strut brace? Don\'t know if that will stiffen it up a bit?
Title: Jono\'s drift project..... Truckin sideways
Post by: Will66 on July 24, 2012, 08:11:35 AM
Don\'t want it too stiff, needs a bit of give particularly in the rear so it has some traction, also means you get more smoke.

There\'s no ARB on it at the moment, but it does need to be slightly stiffer than what it is.... when I was throwing it through the S\'s the cage mounts were hitting the floor!! down the side of the truck there is dist from the contact with the tarmac!!
Also nowhere to put a brace as there are no strut tops, only shock towers and they come half way up the engine! LOL

Well, bit of an update on this for those who are interested....
the old 8 cylinder banger is still holding out and performing well, but I have got a low oil pressure issue when hot, so got to investigate that, but other than that, it\'s putting more expensive metal to shame :)

Quick rn down of broken bits:
Drive shaft, rear 4 link rose joints and loads of tyres! LOL
Changed the spring rate and now it\'s almost spot on, 550lb on the rear and 700lb on the front....
Managed to get enough qualy rounds in to get the skip to the ODC final this year, had great fun on the main pembrey track and banged it in the top 16 shoot out :) Padoc for the final read:
Skyline, Skyline, S14, BMW, Skyline, Driftworks S15, JZ90, Bedford Brava, BMW........ LOL
Obviously I parked up between a skyline and the ex DW car :)
Anyway, unfortunatly I got nocked out in the head to head by a mate, but the end result.... I beat the 750bhp S15! LOL

haha, there is dude, it\'s between the "Go" and the "Go" just the pic is too small for it to be made out clearly ;)

Also liking the look of the skid mark binical cover..... that could be read wrong there! LOL
