Title: My RX-4 that I wanted since I was a kid and why !.
Post by: clive on November 10, 2007, 09:17:18 PM
Some know of my RX-4 and the story of why I wanted this car also I thought it was about time I got an update out here on the club.

In 1973 when I was just 16 and had started work with Mazda at Bourne road garage and even as an apprentice they used to have me doing pre delivery inspections (PDI\'s) before the new cars went out to the customer and at the time we had RX-3\'s and 4\'s in the show room so along with the boingers I used to work on I also got to work on these exciting new Rotarys.

At a time when a British car was lucky to have a heater as an extra and dashboards that just about had a spedo fuel gauge and ammeter it was the at the time super futuristic RX-4 that I fell in love with and little did I know that one day I would end up owning one of these rare cars with only 400 ever being imported and that included the, I think ugly 4 door and estate versions.

This was a time when the Japanese auto industry wanted to show the world just what they could do in the new gadget and gimmick world that was just getting going and with Mazda the RX-4 was it\'s flagship and full of tricks that cars outside of America had never seen.

As a kid this big two door pillerless coupe with an array of gauges before me when I got behind the wheel while working on them was a car that had so many toys unheard of in British cars at the time like a radio and stereo cassette player as standard, Ariel in the window-screen, posh reclining front seats, heated rear screen etc, etc.

But most importantly to me sitting in one, it had this big wrap around dashboard and a console like another dashboard in the roof above my head with fuel, seat belt and door lights in it and also a funny shaped steering wheel in front of me which to me as a kid made the RX-4 seem like sitting in an airplane!.

Imagine my astonishment then when finding out recently when I got an RX-4 brochure to find that Mazda themselves described getting into an RX-4 as being akin to climbing into an aircraft cabin.

Buying the RX-4 came about after chatting to an ex-works Mazda rally driver who had not only raced RX-3\'s in the RAC rally but had also been the son of a Mazda dealer who at one stage owned 5 dealerships.

While talking to him it came to light that he still owned a stored away 30,000 mile RX-4 that his dad owned which was taken off the road 22 years earlier when his dad reached 72 and decided to stop driving.

After telling him what I have told you above about wanting one of these since I was a kid an agreement was arrived even though the car was not for sale at the time with the stipulation being that I didn\'t just get the car out and just sell it on, and here we are 2 years on and I still have the car.

The reason that I have only shown this car once is because whilst the car itself was not rotten with rust and only the front wings had died due to wing mirrors being fitted many years previous, the paint had deteriorated very badly and gone like undercoat.

As you will see from the floor pan picture this car is not your normal put a new floor in it restoration and I am pleased to say that absolutely no repair work has been needed to the bodyshell at all and it has litteraly been prepped and painted like it was a 3 year old car after I stripped it bare.

The car will be getting put back together with the origonal 12A and the decision has been made that nothing will be cut on this car if ever l decided to modifiy it with maybe a different engine should funds permit in the future.

This way the car can always be put back to stock from a Heritage point of view, however flying in the face of purists it will get some RX-8 wheels on it if I can adapt them to fit!.

Below you will see the pictures of the car in storage then onward through till this week when the car was painted,------------------------My colour

It\'s now RX-8 Lightning yellow so I can mix the Old with the New :Giggle

I am so pleased to see your car in paint - you must be running out of all that colour paint you knicked in the 70\'s.

You have till Brooklands to get it moving, or bring it on a trailer.

Have you any better pics of the dash before you striped it out?

Bet you feel good.

Good to see this is getting some attention.  I\'d love to see this car in the flesh.

Nice work Clive  :cheers

Here you go Dave, some more including the motif on the seats but I have no idea about their origin and can only think these youches were added to give a more Luxury feel to this top of the line Mazda,

The rear seats and all the side panels still had all the origonal protective plastic shipping covers that would have normaly been removed on delivery to the customer but as this was dealer owned they were left on, this means that apart from one tiny tiny mark on the drivers the seats and side panels are as new :cool

A little more about the car,

When the car was taken off the road it was stored inside a garage within the house, this means that the only deterioration had been while the vehicle was out covering it\'s 30K then the warmth from the house stopped any rust setting in.

Apparently the owner decided at the age of 72 that his driving days were over and contacted Mazda to ask how to store a Rotary, long term. He was told to literally fill the engine until the the oil was right up in the neck, effectively filling up the engine,

The son was so convinced that the engine would be fine once the engine was drained he even offered a lump of money back should the engine be dead due to standing.

When I got it home I let the engine drain for 2 days, changed the filter, filled it up and it fired up immediately with the only problem being a stuck thermostat which was obviously changed.

A couple of weeks later I stuck trade plates on the car and drove it 100 miles to Santa Pod with no other problems :King

Here are a couple more pictures showing the car when it was first rolled out of it\'s "tomb" and if you look in the back round you will see Carl who was kind enough to help me collect the car.

The Purists won\'t like this but here is a picture that inspired me to try and fit big diameter RX-8 wheels to the car.

I have also found it interesting that all around the RX-4, Mazda put the word "Rotary" or used Rotary shapes wherever possible.

i.e. on the boot, grill, rear side wings and even the center caps on the wheels.

The reason I have found this interesting is because this 1970\'s "Rotary theme" is not used on any other car until 2003 with the Rotary badged RX-8, indeed this is one of the reasons I decided on RX-8 Lightning yellow instead of the normal Sunset yellow used on RX-7 FD\'s, and if, if, I can get RX-8 wheels it will give a bridging the years theme nicely top the car especially because I formed a club to encompass both Old and New School "SmileyCentral.com"

Now i\'m not a purist but,i really really really think you ought to fit some period retro jdm dished wheels on it.....15" max.

I prefer Clive\'s approach, I\'m afraid...  Modern cars have big wheels, and this isn\'t a resto, it\'s an update, so update the wheel stuff.  I\'m doing the same with my 1st gen - the stuff that is going on is better than the factory setup.  The suspension is contemporary, the bushes are poly, the fuelling is modern plumbing, the cooling is done through modern alloys, and the interior is as new and modern as can be done.

But modern cars have big arches that accomodate the bigger wheels so they don\'t look totally out of proportion, When you start adding 18 inch wheels on an older car it starts to look naff imho.

The RX-8 Wheel and up to date colour idea was to try and span most of the Rotary years all in one car and my eventual dream if I have the Penny\'s is to have a 350 brake FD single Turbo engine to have a bit of many Rotary years encompassed in the car,

BUT without cutting anything to fit it in as I want to keep this rust free car capable of being returned to stock if required many years from now.

I was actually going to just push the car away until for at least a year and try and get a more powerful engine screwed together,  but Lisa has convinced me to screw the car back together to get it mobile so people can see it.

Back to the wheels,

I toyed with Minilites but then every body ends up with "period" Minilites so discounted them.

Until I get the car back and on the way to being reassembled I have no idea if the RX-8 wheels with adapters made up will fit, and whilst I am a subscriber to "no such word as can\'t", like I said, this is a car that I won\'t cut the shell about to make things fit so if I cant get steering with very few mods I will have to reconsider.

The other thing about big diamiter wheels is that I have a set of RX-8 Disc brakes laying around that I would like to fit to go on, and you ain\'t going to get 15" wheels over those monstrous 322 and 302mm Disc\'s!.

Definately a very nice car. The oldskool look is fantastic and I think won\'t ever look too dated.

As for the hot topic on wheels. I was shocked at how small 17\'s looked on the 1st gen. The proportions wheren\'t screwed up at all and looked amazing.

Its more a case of how it drives down the road on 18\'s !

Can\'t wait for more info and pictures :D

looking good! will be looking forward to seeing it sometime next year all finished?

That Rx-8 yellow is very similar to the yellow that was originally available from Mazda in the 70\'s (well on some models it was) so not at all out of keeping with the age of the car. My 323 will be painted in John deere Yellow :) lol only because the paint is good quality and very cheap ;)

I think wheels are a personal choice and really like some of the Aussie style modern wheel old car combo\'s but also love the period look as well. I think both can be made to work equally well.

If the brakes are one of the issues for you,i have a ta22 celica with 282mm discs and konig rewind 15" wheels and i could have gone another 10mm disc radius with it easily....They are with wilwood calipers though if that makes a difference. They come in 16\'s too.

The RX4 is such a cool looking car. I got to say though dont screw it up with big rims, it really doesnt look right on old cars, small deep dishes and flaired arches are the way forward imho.

Title: My RX-4 that I wanted since I was a kid and why !.
Post by: mr.bishi on November 16, 2007, 05:36:44 PM
I disagree......just because it\'s contemporary on the underside,doesn\'t mean you have to fit big wheels and just because wheels are big,it doesn\'t automatically mean they\'re contemporary either....those konig rewinds i posted are a contemporary take on an old design.

Hell, you wouldn\'t start adding aluminium wings and plastic bumpers would you just because it\'s an update would you? It\'s all about keeping things in proportion imo....too big wheels remind me of the Maccy d\'s crew rollin on 19\'s on a Corsa.

(BTW Clive,i\'m not likening putting rx8 wheels on your car to a corsa on 19\'s nor am i trying to tell you what to do....i wouldn\'t be so presumptuous ,i\'m just sharing an opinion with the archbish :Thumbs-up )

The great thing about wheels is you can change them so easily,so if you don\'t like a look then you can change it.....you can even have 2 sets for 2 looks.

I\'m talking old school cars....current cars are designed from scratch to wear big rims, the proportions are aesthetically correct. Also by the same token, small wheels on large cars look silly.It\'s all about getting a balance imo

But, when it comes modifying cars there are no hard and fast rules, but some things just work better than others. :)

Lovely car Clive :)  I was lucky enough to have a good look at it on it\'s maiden outing to Santa Pod - what a find! :) I remember all of the plastic door protectors being on the door liners etc...amazing!:god

The whole futuristic, reliability and features not as extra\'s thing is why my Dad got into Mazda\'s himself in the 70\'s.  Mind you he started with an 818 - which didn\'t look anywhere as futuristic as your car!

You always hear people saying that the Japanese copied Euro cars for their designs. What I wonder did they copy for this?

So glad you\'ve got some paint on at last and it\'s impressive the lengths you have gone to to preserve this beauty (giving it personality whilst not compromising it\'s return to standard at a future date)!

Can\'t wait to see it when it\'s all back together!

Very pleased with the paint Finnish bearing in mind the Finnish you see is from the gun as the car is not going to be mopped until it\'s assembled.

I will try and keep the pictures coming as I build it up, hopefully the deadline will be the MRC meeting at Brooklands,

Well,I finally found what you were telling me the other day!! Looks a great car and yank styling( as in nearly every japanese car of the time) is -to me anyway- obvious. Pontiac GTO grille, Challenger/Charger fastback, Mustang GT roof console. All mixed well with the usual Japanese efficiency!! The yeller looks great and I certainly don\'t see a problem with the wheels. I\'ve got this thing about so called \'restorations\'. Who\'s car is it? To me, you aren\'t doing anything radical to it like chopping the body so you do what you want!!(Is this the right time to- er- say our Grants(now shagged-for the moment )RX7 is even rarer than yours!!!!!!!!!!!!! Verry nice story. those old cars have realy strong soul. First time i seen mazda rx4 in old magazine, never seen it before. fell in love from the first look. start searching for it and after year - found. Already 4 years owning my mazda. collected almost all parts, Australia is much lighter now :D
last week painted. now assembling....

Clive - don\'t you want to fit some oldschool wheels?

Hi Clive
How about this for an apparent absolute bargain: http://ottawa.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1974-MAZDA-RX4-WAGON-W0QQAdIdZ50314959

- just as we discussed at Brooklands.

Were it not for the automatic transmission I’d be over there to buy it and stick it in my brother’s garage! I could – just about – live with those 74-onward bumpers.

Here you go here\'s a couple of bum shots plus the front end is now finished with new trims  and I changed the headlamps and bezels for new ones I forgot I had!,

I have been collecting some new trim parts for some three years now, i.e. badges lights bumpers etc to try and get this car as close to looking as new as I can however new parts for these are like rocking horses that poo!

Interestingly I went on Aus Rotary a while back and they reckon they have just about no MK1 RX-4\'s left over there which surprised me as I thought that whilst we only got 400 MK1\'s and MK2\'s I thought OZ got millions,

I have even heard that most of our RX-4\'s were actually from Australia rather than Japan and fed in through the back door by the private "Mazda Motors" company that used to sell on behalf of Mazda before they took back ownership to sell their own products themselves.

Tomorrow we will see if the new carpet from OZ fits then I can get the interior fitted back together.

Hi All thought I would give you a last update now the car is on the road with tax, mot and has been to Rotorstock,

As some of you know we also own an RX-8 hence the colour choice and it\'s been interesting to put both cars together because obviously one evolved from the other, indeed look at the similar side window shape with the cars together.

The thing that I also like is that with the RX-4 Mazda wanted to not only show the world "look at what we can build" they also wanted to tell the world "it\'s Rotary powered" with RE badges something that was dropped until the RX-8 that now has Rotary symbols all over it.

When you look at the pictures with the cars together bear in mind that there is exactly 30 years between each model with the RX-4 from 1973 and the 2003 RX-8

Yep Crager SS, never seen these on any Jap car over here or anywhere on an RX-4 or 3, went for these as they started making them in the 1960\'s so they were "period" for the car,

Real pig to fit but I feel it was worth it, the offsets were all wrong and had to get from 4 to 5 stud but we got them buy re-drilling the rear axle and making special adapters for the front that kept the stock hubs and disc\'s.

Gone from 13" to 15" but kept the rolling radius close with lower profile tyres,

Been around these cars since I was 15 (used to do PDI\'s on RX-3 and 4\'s) and I was supprised not only with the shapes that have come across but also while stripping the car found many smal parts like clips n things that are still used on RX-7/8 \'s

Thanks Bern,

Great looking car but I managed to resist the lets modify it route, I was offered a big power lump  for nothing but resisted and swore that as the car has never been welded in its life that I wouldn\'t so much a drill a hole in it to keep it stock (ish),

The only mods are the wheels and the front struts are now coil over so the car sits right,

I view this car as a Mazda heritage car that could be put back to bone stock at the drop of a hat apart from the color  that is,

Real shame I can\'t get it out to your Sevenstock meet, now where\'s those lottery tickets :Giggle

Here\'s why,

Turned out an Australian mate who used to live here and is now in Aus and works with a guy with an RX-4 that\'s on 18\'s I found out it\'s not really practical, for one thing the steering is restricted to just about nothing!,

As many know, this car is no trailer queen and as I wanted the car practical, so the 18\'s I had already brought went out the window in favor of being able to romp around properly with my Toy :cheers,

BTW, you have put your from New Hope, if your really outside the U/K we will convert you to an Overseas Guest which gives you more site access,
Title: That\'s Juni\'s Lamborghini Blue RX4 ( My friend Juni)
Post by: RX4ERIC on November 29, 2009, 03:45:47 AM
Hey Clive, that\'s Juni\'s RX4 the blue one, he\'s got a shop here at Baldwin park, California. His company JRX is the only company that makes the RX4 Carbon Fiber hood. His car is actually the reason why i\'m doing my project. He doesn\'t know it yet that I have an RX4 that I\'m working on. When I\'m done with my project I will drive my car to his shop so I can order a carbon fiber hood, he, he ,he. I can\'t wait to see the look on his face, he\'s a pretty cool guy, very nice and down to earth person. He is full of information on rotaries, always eager to help out. Like the color on your car too. Parts for the RX4 are hard to find, I was just lucky that I found this one in good shape, no body rust what so ever. Hey, if you guys are looking for a front spolier like Juni\'s, there is a guy here in Southern California by Ventura, that has a warehouse of spoilers from the 70\'s. He charges $100-$125 dollars for each, you guys just have to pay for shipping. If you guys want just let me know and I\'ll post his phone number. Keep up the good work on that RX4!!!:cheers

Car is looking as good as ever Clive. I have a windshield, sadly it is going in my car so no help. Have decided on a colour change as I couldn\'t find the right grey mettalic I wanted. Might not be to everyones taste but it\'s my car and I think it will look good. I will tell you next time I ring so as no one steals my idea.

I dug this up for somebody to look at and thought I would get some this years  pictures added to show the cars still alive ok.

It\'s still running well, giving no problems at all and was out being used as a daily as recently as 3 days ago, not only has it done varied shows this year including Custom/ Hot Rod shows where it\'s been well accepted.

Also had a trip to the Netherlands this year putting 700 faultless miles on it and probably being the only RX-4 to ride in the shuttle and was out being used as a daily as recently as 3 days ago before getting tucked up in the garage again, but not for long as I love driving this car at every opportunity, always said it would not be a trailer queen or an ornament  :3gears-rh .

Really lovely to see these photos Clive. Gives me a bit of inspiration to get on with mine. The yellow is striking and looks good! Wish i could have come down to see it. How did you find the handling? How did the bigger wheels affect it?  I\'ve still got the 13"s on mine but they could do with going a little bigger but like you, the handling is important. Looks are important too but need a compromise and 4x110 PCD is always a pain!

Great car, looking lovely, brilliant stuff.
Title: My RX-4 that I wanted since I was a kid and why !.
Post by: clive on September 07, 2013, 10:11:11 AM
The RX-4 actually handled very very well with a slight bit of controllable understeer.

Mind you its aided by the fact that I had the shocks converted to coil over shocks so I could get rid of the nose up attitude that RX-4\'s have plus 200lbs front springs.

Wheels are 7x15 but the profile of the tyres keeps the overall diameter the same as stock, so the gearing is not altered at all.

To continue the history of the car this link may amuse you, taken by a very patient Chris (CJR), as Jim (Lennycarloff) said it even looks like period footage,

It\'s from when I took the RX-8 to Goodwood a few weeks ago, just for the grin of taking the car round such an historic track.

Clive as a friend, don\'t take this the wrong way but "if you sell that car before mine is up and running I\'m going to cut your toes off"!!!

I want to get some photos of the 2 together. Standard car/Race car shots :D

Best hurry up Grant its up for sale tomorrow (fortunately I\'m only joking )

Seriously I sat and wrote this out below, the more I wrote it dawned on me what just how special this car really is :Thumbsup!

If ever you have seen Clint Eastwood in "Gran Torino" I have had referances made about this film, i.e. when you die but only in fun :Giggle

As you will see, I sure as hell was not going to give it away !!!.

"If" I would have sold it as this money it would have immediately upped the price right through our Rotary world, don\'t forget many now invest in rare classic cars cars due to no return with banks etc and this has led to many cars that you would not think would command "real real" monies going through the roof ---------- 1 million doller 240Z springs to mind, a normal Jag being restored back to stock for 100K, I could go on and on.

Mazda RX-4 1973 12A Series one Coupe.

Stunning rare RX-4 that’s possibly the most famous and photographed RX-4 in the world and the only RX-4 on the Road in the UK if not Europe that can be checked on this link. http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=mazda+rx4

Simply put Mazda RX-4 into Google and this Magazine featured car immediately comes up plus it has also won many show awards including Best of Shows at Brooklands and Rotorstock.
This super rare UK delivered RX-4 taxed with Mot and is ready on the button to win many more as it turns more heads than an Enzo. However it’s not just a Show Car it’s very enjoyable to use road car and even took a trip around Goodwood race track a couple of months ago, even though it was at a leisurely pace.

Due to the rarity and following of these cars and the condition of this RX-4 both inside and out with all original excellent condition seats and interior this represents an excellent financial investment that will appreciate year on year.
Also featured on Speedhunters.com which also shows the amazing original interior condition.  http://www.speedhunters.com/2010/08/car_spotlight_gt_gt_mellow_yellow_rx4/

After searching for many years after starting my apprentice working on these cars at a Mazda dealer, this numbers matching RX-4 was found correctly stored “actually inside a house”, owned by an ex-Works Mazda Rally Driver for 26 years which was his Mazda dealer father’s last car.

This  means the body shell on this car has never been welded as the heat from the house preserved the car, the car was then lovingly taken apart cleaned and painted only because the paintwork had deteriorated, even the delivery plastics were still on the back seat and all the door panels.

This gorgeous head turning stock RX-4 apart from the Crager wheels fits in at any show, be it classic, custom etc., is on the road and ready to drive and show with a newly refreshed engine at 41700 miles that was only rebuilt as a precaution with one brand new rotor housing fitted due to a slight piece of corrosion with  every seal and gasket renewed, plus a new clutch assembly using all new genuine Mazda Parts, see here for engine being assembled http://youtu.be/69LE-WiPXd8

Engine is now fully run in with a total of only 4300 miles ever being covered by this amazing car
Reserve Starting price £29,500.00

With the coming show season looming, I figured we would give the RX-4 a nice new MOT (which it passed with no problems) plus a new set of wheels

We now have Rocket Racing rims that are 8x15 rear and 7x15 fronts that are a much cleaner looking rim than the Cragers they replace.

Off to Wheels Day at Dunsfold next Friday for its first show of the year.

If you have never heard of Wheels Day, its HUGE

Surprised when i saw this a rotorstock a few years back by the choice of wheels, but they really do suit it in a muscle car type of way.

My Rx4 coupe was originally yellow too, mines a series 2 74\'.  Unfortunately several careful owners and several coats of paint later its now in a terrible primer type white!

Many Thanks to Furb who kindly donated a correct Mazda info sticker so I could get my air filter lid powder coated.:Thumbsup!

Had the cars first day out at Wheels day @ Dunsfold where the I should have had the bonnet spring loaded because all day people wanted to see the engine, who then raved about the little Rotary that pushes the car along.

Seriously had the car had a big block V8 in the bay the interest would have had no where near the attention the Rotary received :Viking

Turned out to be an excellent Rotary promotional day out, destroying a few long held Anti Rotary myths held by some   :D

While downloading pictures I thought I would show this one as we are now never going back to Brooklands which is one of the greatest Motor venues on Earth.

It was a privilege to be able to take such a last picture at such an historic place.

Wow just realised how I had neglected my RX-4 thread and so much has happened since the last post  !!

Anyway I thought I would share something that was quite ironic that happened today even after hiding it front on  :D. (see pic below)

Decided to take the RX-4 for a run out to Edenbridge Motor Show and didn't even clean it.  http://www.edenbridgemotorshow.co.uk/ around 300 cars of all years were there and some real real nice modern to vintage stuff was there------- and the judges pick the RX-4 as Best of Show  ::)

The irony is with the RX-4 being the only Rotary there, look at the trophy  :29:

What with all the playing with the race car, I was getting worred the RX-4 was getting neglected so I dragged it out of the garage today checked it over, found all was well and gave it a run and a wash.

Noticed a blister on the front wing that's going to need a bit of attention for this season, mind you, that's not bad for a car that's now 45 years also I have had it on the road out and about for 11 years now  :)

Here's a batch of pictures taken today

Went to a little car show at Leeds Castle yesterday with the RX-4 and had a nice supprise.

We met a Japanese older lady who was a "car girl"!

She was super excited to see a Luce, as she had only ever seen a few coupes in Japan when they were new, she even knew her Cappellas, from her Savvanas  :).

She went on to tell us that the reason the Luce (RX-4)  was rare in Japan was because they were expensive against other brands, BUT, she went on to tell me that where she lived in Osaka, because the Luce was fast the Police bought them so they could keep up while chasing the Japanese Mafia!

She showed me a great picture on her phone of a Police "Panda car" which I thought was ironic as we used to call our Police cars "Panda cars"

I cant find the picture she showed me, but she also said they made models of the Luce Police and I found one of those. Still into cars and she found a red Luce on her phone for sale in Japan, 11000 GBP needing a full resoration.

You just never know who you may meet at a car show and this was so odd I thought I would share  :great:
