FC EGI Update
« on: September 18, 2017, 02:10:42 PM »
Thought I’d provide an update on my FC....

Another Summer has gone by, with some 2,500 miles added to the clock since May's MOT.

Only issue – past suspicions of an intermittent clutch fault came to light again with a reluctance to go in to gear in stop/start traffic on a trip back from Gatwick.  Suspect pilot bearing.  Working fine now but probably time to invest in a clutch kit.  Can’t really complain as it is the original clutch.

Other “to do” items:
Aside from the usual Service items:
Exhaust..  Current exhaust is too noisy for my mature years!  I want to maintain the twin pipe arrangement.  Tempted to go the RB route but keep hesitating at the price.   Been thinking about this for the last year but with the clutch issue it makes sense to get this done at the same time.  So time to get my act together :)
Bushes.  Some showing signs of wear and time to replace.  Have a set from the US so just a case of getting round to it.
Replace inside passenger door handle (which is cracked).
Replace outside drivers door handle.  The mechanism cracked on mine last year.  Fixed it but I can’t see it lasting too long and there is more play in the handle than there should be.
Replace windscreen washers. Needed to use them more this year and it reminded me how inadequate they are.  Have a couple of new Ford Maverick (Escape/Mazda Tribute) ones which should be a direct replacement and give a substantially better coverage.

Back Boxes - not sure on the specific type.  Looks pretty standard - stainless steel.  I was referred to the garage that fitted the system by a nearby RX7 owner when I was living in Devon.  Up until then (2005) the car had been eating up Mazda's own boxes, but I decided a 3rd set was one too many, so went the SS route.

Bushes - yep, always helps to know where they go.  I'll dig them out the garage and post some photo's identifying which is which.  I think they're the same ones as RB sell.

Let us know how you get on with the Poly bushes.
I'm doing a full replacement of all suspension bushes this year, but I'm leaning towards standard rubber replacements which won't shake my teeth out.

Have been wondering about that myself!  Planning on doing the sway bars to start with, but will certainly let you know.  If I end up with too rigid a ride then it will be back to rubber :)

that's awesome :)

I don't think mine is a complete set , so need to dig them out the garage and work out what matches yours :)

Going to resurrect this thread.

The old "to do" list isn't exactly complete due work and family commitments, but I have made progress.  Didn't do all the bushes, just those that were badly worn on the sway bars - but it has made a difference and the drive feels a more positive and no adverse effects in terms of ride. Still need to replace the exterior drivers door handle, but my repair seems to have lasted.  Clutch is behaving itself so have deferred that!  Just tempted fate by saying that of course :).

Car has just got another clean bill of health for 12 months - not the cheapest MOT as it involved welding (rear seat belt anchorages and inner sill), plus a rebuild of one of the rear calipers.  I've ordered the RB exhaust which should be here in a couple of weeks.  So the old "ASBO" exhaust will need to go to a good home.  Once its off and hopefully not damaged I'll get some photo's and post.

New for the "to do" list -
- fix antenna, which appears to be suffering from old age as it won't rise to the occasion!  Motor works which is encouraging at least.
- get the drivers seat sorted out - a couple of splits and the foam is coming out.  Probably time to get both front seats re-upholstered.
- cosmetic items, including replacing wing mirror glass, finding a decent battery box lid, strengthen the rear parcel shelf which is in danger of collapsing and restore the wheels to their original polished alloy.
- deal with the various rusty spots, largely on the sunroof.
